I get in a nontradionial hockey market where you need to sell tickets like a CLB or an Ottawa, you need stars to attract fans. In Toronto you could have 18 Pontus Holmberg's and you will still sell tens of thousands of Merch, you don't need stars in Toronto to make money. If any city in the NHL could have a no name team and follow the Rays asset management model, it's Toronto. We can spend more money on scouts and development than any team, why are we not using that advantage to our advantage. We could be out there scouting for the next Bunting who scores you 20 to 30 goals for 900k a year. It's illogical to escalate salaries on players who will give you the same or less return.

We seem to want to stick to the old school model of find a star, keep a star, overpay for a star.

The Dubas experiment was insanity looking back at it all in hindsight. It was like he was a “Player GM” who aligned himself with his stars more than repping the franchise and by the end of it he was negotiating like he was Matthews or Nylander or Marner or Sandin. Just a mad house.

It was insanity without hindsight. So many wrong moves and decisions from the off. The whole concept was wrong. Things were starting to stabilize and be on the up, a Cup final was only a matter of time. And then bam.

I don't care how many games they'd lose during a rebuild. At least you'd be building for something new with some hope, as opposed to throwing bandaids on wounds that require reconstructive surgery and having to plug your nose to cheer for your own team.
