Trade Marner for 40 goal scorer Kempe and Nylander for 86 point Keller.

Combined salary of Kempe and Keller, 12.5 million. Mitch Marner, 11 million.
Marner can play with Dubois in LA.

Pretty much leaves you Nylander’s entire salary to put into the D remake.
LA can't fit Marner in. I'd retain if they added Clarke.

Zona won't touch Willie unless he agrees to resign there and only way is if they overpay him.

Trade them ALL.
I honestly can’t stand these guys.
They're hard to like, no doubt about it. Trading them all would be radical move but if I had to choose between bringing them all back (just paying them more money) and trading them all, I'd definitely trade them all. Take back salary and a ton pf picks and prospects and go into the tank. Radical for sure but there would at least be reason to think better days are ahead a few years from now.

Unfortunately is feels like we're trying to bring them all back except maybe trade Nylander if he asks for too much (which will not make the team better) and overall, the future at the moment looks pretty f***ing bleak indeed.

Marner is already over paid at 11M. they cannot give him a raise. But the GM shakeup really messed with any trade talks for Marner. They have to move him now and pay Nylander $9.5 x 8yrs and Matthews 13M for 8yrs. Considering the assets PLD got the Jets, Marner would bring back enough assets to help in the future and now.

I'm with the camp to keep Willy with Auston over Marner, but this all timing. Nylander expired before Marner and has to go before his raise kicks in, its just finances.

Leafs mgmt don't understand that they do have leverage. Those endorsements are wrecked if Matthews is in Zona and Marner is in Carolina. Nobody gives a F about them there.

It will be skip the paycheck not dishes outside this market.

The Dubas experiment was insanity looking back at it all in hindsight. It was like he was a “Player GM” who aligned himself with his stars more than repping the franchise and by the end of it he was negotiating like he was Matthews or Nylander or Marner or Sandin. Just a mad house.
When Shanny hired him, I said he was putting his balls on the line. Man was I wrong. Shanny is teflon.

If Nylander and his agent were using comparable wingers throughout the NHL as a measuring stick, I'm sure the numbers would be reasonable.

Unfortunately for us, they're most likely using Matthews and Marner as comparables, which will hinder our ability to extend him at a palatable AAV.

A trade is the most likely outcome. Hopefully, a sign and trade that will net a boatload of assets.

The thing is, Matthews and Marner are getting all the endorsements here but not Willy. Maybe that's why the contract talk with Matthews turns out to be much easier than Willy (also more critical because Willy has only a 10 team no trade).

Losing Dubas was NOT a step backwards.
He is the reason we are in this mess.
His stain will remain for the next 2 drafts as well as he mortgaged us well into the future.
This. He reset the RFA market for the whole league. He enabled these players entitlement. And now it's continuing into their UFA negotiations after he's gone

Right he can cite being in the same market conditions as them. Then he can use the Marner argument that was made at one point that he is being under utilized on line 2. Didn't get PP time in the PO etc.

I find the perception of Nylander being a "playoff performer" very interesting. I get that he scored some big goals which is what many fans have chosen to remember. But why are we are so quick to forgive and forget the fact that he is a complete no show in so many other vital parts of a game.

I honestly can't remember a single time he purposely blocked a shot late in a game, made a good hit or stood up for a teammate. He is the face of the "Leafs" are easy to play against" crowd. I believe teams that have playoff success eventually wear the other team down like a boxer early in a bout. Nylander offers none of that.

Don't get me wrong. I love what 88 does on the offensive side of the rink. Great player. But you simply can't pay a guy like that north of 9 million. I would much prefer to have a Bertuzzi type player at 6-7 million while using the other 2-3 million elsewhere.

Half the league. Not everyone was drinking it that night.

I understand the frustration with Marners bitchy attitude and his playoff "performances" but the guy is an elite player that can be played in literally any situation. PK/PP, when you're defending a late game goal or trying to score a late game goal, O-zone/D-zone starts.

Nylander has been much better in the playoffs IMO, but he isn't half as good off the puck as Marner is. I've shit on Marner quite a bit, having some time to cool off if I keep one, I'm keeping Marner.

Why would LA do that?

Kempe>Marner when he's half the AAV

I was thinking more financially, Marner's probably getting 12.5m on his next deal with Matthews making 13.5. So much committed to 2 players. Nylander's not as good, but at 9-9.5 with Matthews you can actually build a team around them.

Funny how that list only has 1 player that was not on the top line facing the top players from the other team.
Those guys would probably being facing each other in best vs best as well as the top pairing D.
What would M+M numbers be if they always got the secondary units and secondary D and how much would Willy's numbers drop against the best.second
I think you missed the sarcasm, as obviously those stats show he was at least as good if not better than all the others.

And yes, he was the only one not playing with top tier linemates, and he managed better numbers regardless.

What would Marner's numbers be like if he was stuck on a line with Tavares and Kerfoot? As it is, he's the only one on that list with a cap hit over $9.5

Honestly, we could retain on Matthews and Marner. Grab Picks, young players and expiring contracts.

Willy at his current deal will still get you a very good asset.

2 years JT comes off the books.

Get some Canadian boys who want to play in TO and give a shit about winning.
