I thought the Dubas school of negotiating goes seeming like this...

Nylander: "I want $5 mil"
Dubas: "I'll give you $6 mil, final offer and I'm not budging!"
Nylander: "Uh?"
Dubas: "$6.5 mil, final offer"
Nylander: "Uh? Wha...?"
Dubas: "$6.9 mil ..final offer ..please stop....! I'm not good at this stuff!!!"

$ 8.8 mil ..."You take less" Uh Huh... Timo you are such a hero for only taking $9 mil to work 82 days a year.
Not that I dont disagree with the sentiment that they dont get paid well. He sure as hell works more than 82 days a year, the 3 hours you see players for 82 games doesnt reveal the dozens of hours of gym and practices per game that you dont see.

Remember Matthew Tkachuk and the label of him being complete trash and a playoff choker ? You're only a choker until you aren't, he has too much talent not to break through at some point.

My issue with Willy is when he gets scared of going after pucks and how bad he is defensively. He drives plays offensively but he's not a guy you can play in every situation. Marner on the other hand is the MVP of our PP and PK.

In a perfect world I'd love to keep them both. Gun to my head and I have to pick 1 ? Give me Marner.
Sure I get that. But on the other hand, I thought he "broke through" last year when he played quite well against TB even though we lost. Then this year, he again played well. But then against Florida, he kind of sucked again.

From a guy who takes up that kind of cap space, I need more consistent performance in the playoffs. Him playing well one series, then sucking the next, then breaking through again and then sucking again, that's just not good enough. I have no doubt he'll again be fantastic at times in the playoffs, I just don't feel like he's someone we can count on to do so consistently.

Marner's better than Nylander but when it comes to bang for the buck, Nylander's been better to this point. Can't be sure what the case will be going forward as of course it depends on what their cap hits are and how they play. All we can be sure of at this point is that Marner's cap hit will be bigger, we just don't know how big that gap will be. It wouldn't surprise me if they traded Nylander because he's asking for too much but then we sign Marner for a bigger overpayment than Nylander would have been and that would be a pukeworthy outcome indeed.

The antithesis of our stars’ mindset and why the Leafs will never win with them. Unlike a sawth of recent examples of stars taking less, our guys just want every sliver of the cake and to eat half the other guys’ as well

Trade anyone that doesn’t take a team-friendly deal/modest raise.

We’re not asking any players to take a literal discount/ less money than current deals… is too much to ask of a player to be a team player and loyal enough to the crest to not demand a 3,4 mil raise in a cap era?

If there was no cap, was merely a soft cap/lux tax, shit, go nuts dudes. Get yourselves 20m/yr, we’d give no shits

This is dumb as f***. He signed for fair value and totally failed to show up in the playoffs, and is now patting himself on the back for taking less to win. What's so impressive about that?

The thing with this group of 4 is, individually they probably could win. Insert one of them onto a Vegas/Colorado/Tampa (and still maintain cap compliance, swap someone in or out for this exercise), those teams still win cups because 90% of the roster plays the right way to win in the playoffs.

But together, none of the 4 play winning hockey. You can't have half of your cap space spent on those kinds of players, and they damn sure shouldn't be getting raises for that performance

The contempt some here have for pro athletes is astounding. Franchise valuations keep soaring and yet people still seem to think the players are overpaid. A mid-tier franchise like Ottawa is worth near a billion and people whine about stars making 7 figures.

I spend 60 to 90 min each day working out, I stick to a strict Keto diet (a lot of planning goes into my diet and shopping for said diet), I have a strict sleeping regimen, I'm currently taking courses to further my education, I should ask for a raise... :) . Not sure I'm ready to give a Hero badge to him just yet...

This is the reason we’re on this mess.

Trade him and get a Dubois type return. The team will be better for it in terms of balance.

I love Willy but this is the reality of where we are at. Don't trade him to just trade him but find the right deal that will allow the team to be far more balanced.
I completely agree with this. Stop thinking in terms of a few superstars and a collection of grunts. We need more stars and kind of stars, fewer superstars and grunts. The Dubois trade was the perfect template for what I am hoping for.

If Rangers Leafs Habs Vegas took over da board then moved league to a luxury tax we would all be happy .. Canadian teams would win 50% of Cups and Gary could use tax redistribution to help out Cats Yotes Canes etc .. half da teams will still spend what at current rate which they can barely afford and league will still be able to sell media deals .. no one cares when Cup goes to California .. so they are losing nothing .. and we move to an MLB format where really all that matters are Red Sox vs Yankee games and Gieants v Dodgers

How do those valuations increase each year? A $20 ticket 30 years ago is now $300, a jersey that was $40, 30 years ago, is now $300. All that greed is on the backs of fans. You positioned your replied like I was OK with the ridiculous team valuations, to be clear players and owners are greedy fat pigs. Hey if you think a man hitting a rubber disk with a graphite stick is worth $8.8 mil per year, peace. Personally I don't.

What we normalize to justify ridiculous societal "norms" astounds me.

I know right... I should put it on YouTube.... I'll be a star....

Until the new wife kicks both their asses and tells them what to do: shut up and sign an 8 year fair value deal in Toronto……. :)
Wonder how different he’d be looked at if Dubas would have signed him to his initial 8 year ask?

It's not about a tough life, it's about treating people with respect, especially those that come home with goal of winning us a cup. Why would anyone give us an inch if in 3 or 4 years we have no problem throwing them out with the bath water. If they do it to the home town captain, they'd have no qualms doing it to anyone else.
Vegas does it every year. Agree about JT though. Thats a deal they just have to eat.

Sounds like you belong on a commune or something brother. In our society the free market decides what is valuable. NHL TV rights, tickets, etc. are all very valuable. The money is going into the system regardless, I like seeing the players get their fair share rather than ownership reaping all the benefits.

If you're taking a stand against capitalism I would suggest there are more pressing and relevant examples of injustice in the world than NHL stars making millions.

The most common winning team makeup I know is the following...

1 Top 7 Tender in the league
1 Top 10 Forward in the league
1 Top 10 Defender is pretty much a must

Then around that it usually comes down to depth so the team that does best at contracts and brings in people with genuine desire / self sacrifice type qualities to win takes it.

There is also luck because you need all your best players to catch fire at the same time to get it done. Especially the tender.

This year's winning team barely had just one of those, if we're being generous. There is no winning team formula, and chasing some magical formula is usually how a team screws something good up.

The Irish coffee worked,I finally figured out why the big 4 always fail in the playoffs.

Their paychecks end when the regular season ends.

So,no pay,no play.

Night and day. He would be the model for being part of the solution vs being viewed as part of the problem. Many would recognize him as underpaid.

He also wouldn’t have been in the doghouse with Leaf fans and having to rebuild good will die to an acrimonious RFA negotiation.

I think Leaf Nation would love nothing more than to wholeheartedly embrace Mitch. He’s a talented, likeable Toronto kid.

What he does on the ice endears him. It’s what he does off the ice during contract discussions that puts people off.

Hopefully his wife is the one setting the tone in the next discussion, and the male machismo between Paul and his agent gets pushed into the background. Mitch is now a man and it’s something he and his wife need to own. Papa Paul can go kick rocks.
