William Nylander has scored more regular season goals and playoff goals then Mitch Marner throughout their careers and Mitch has been making +$4 mil per season for the past 4 seasons.

I have no doubt Nylander is looking to close that gap significantly now on his next deal and so that asking number is between $10 and $11 mil.

example "You're paying everyone else $11 mil so where is mine?"

The only one standing between this insanity of more overpriced contracts and reality is Brad Treliving and I hope he holds the line and puts his foot in the ground and says "enough is enough".
So tell him to go find a team that will pay him closer to Marner and we'll work out a deal. Dubas f***ed us with his lack of negotiation skills with the greedy 3. Time to right a wrong. Get rid of these guys if they value money more than winning. I've seen enough of this bullshit. Wishful thinking as there in less than 15 hours to D Day. I'm starting to think Shanny is a bigger part of the problem than Dubas was.

You're kinda proving why players like Matthews, Marner and Nylander should go after every dollar and every player friendly clause they can get. It's a business. And when you no longer have leverage, you're expendable and you will be treated like cattle.
Let me be treated like cattle for 80 million dollars for 8 yrs . It's a tough life

Matthews was good in the playoffs. Not Eichel/Point/Mackinnon good, but still much better than his regular season.

Not sure why anyone would identify him as the main problem.

How about the depth scoring? Where the hell did Brodie dissapear to? Tavares was terrible in round 2.

Lots of reasons we lost that series. Our defence was terrified of being hit and our depth dissapeared. Tavares and ROR looked like Simmonds and Reaves out there with their skating.

Gotta get faster, better at absorbing the forecheck, and need to add some Marshy type depth scoring.

You asked.

Probably because:

This isn't the first time he's been shutdown in the playoffs.

I think everyone was hoping O'Reilly would bring some magic with him.

Now back to Nylander, I could see Penguins being interested.

They have some pieces that would work, they'd be getting the best player, but I think that is the case in any deal for Nylander.

If he's asking that kind of salary, you don't even need to think "get rid of him"

More like, pass him off to someone else.

Nylander at 8 years x $10?

Nope. Move him.

Move Marner.

Keep Matthews. Roll with him and Morgan and Tavares.

I don't care if Matthews costs $15 per, shave $5 off of that, it's Jack Campbell.

Manage this team? Do NOT let these guys dictate the future of the team. Don't play hardball, tell 'em to f off already. Do what Shanny did to Dubas.

And go from there.
The problem IS Shanny! Hes the one that wants them around!
I think the one thing beside trading JT is replace him as Capt to send a message across the room that the past few years might be good but they need to do more, a lot more.
Agreed...

Normally I’d say it’s cosmetic. But you kinda need something cosmetic if not substantive.

I lost any concerns about keeping the band together back when players like Brown, Kapanen, Johnsson (career totally flamed out), Hyman, Andersen, Kadri were deemed expendable for cap or competitive reasons. Why should William Nylander or Mitch Marner or Auston Matthews be any different in terms of sentimental reasons? The question should only be "Does this make the team a better playoff contender or not?"

These turkeys have it way too easy.

Too many players, like Nylander, are far too comfortable regarding their roster spot.

Those pictures of Nylander on social media are doing nothing to help his cause. Hardworking fans at back breaking jobs see him out partying it up after the team failing so badly again. Then he has the nerve to demand even more money for losing.

It's not a good look.

The Blue and White disease is embedded deep with this core. The whole country club attitude of entitlement and privilege. Players demanding big money for not getting the job done.

With elite money comes elite responsibility.

These guys are professional athletes. That's their job. To win.

If they can't win when it matters most why are they even on the team?
Bingo....agree 100%

Maybe the slightest amount of influence comes from fan sentiment but otherwise MLSE believes correctly that they can manage fan sentiment through their strangle hold on conventional media. I believe this "scare story" by Friedman is about managing the shock of Nylander getting moved or the size of the contract he eventually signs to stay. These things are just easier to digest if the "shock" is previewed first.
I think there’s a case to made for Dreger digging up some information and then trolling the fans.
Many Leafs fans forget how poorly constructed the team is and how poorly they competed and are easily triggered.

I don't think Tavares was ever really the team's leader anyways. It was made somewhat obvious this past playoffs when Ryan O'Reilly and Morgan Rielly seemed to be the team's real leaders.

I mentioned this earlier, but Gross (Nylanders agent) doesn't have much of a history of using Media leaks - he's apparently very much like Lou in this regard. Meaning anything from these Nylander negotiations is likely coming from the team's side. I'd be curious if the Leafs are just trying to add some extra pressure to get a signing wrapped up

From what we've heard Treliving loves to talk.

It has been reported in many reports, he talks to everyone all the time.

And we still lost. I don't think William Churchill is enough of a leader to get these guys over the hump. They are the common denominator is this playoff shit show.

Guess it's not long before we know how bad we are going to get fleeced

The Leafs have the best of the best amenities and perks. Players rave about how they are blown away at how much pampering is available.

Yet every penny must be squeezed by the team's stars. Maybe stop the pampering then...what's the point? I mean I doubt the Panthers players are treated like royalty with Michelin chefs, team dog walkers and gold plated hot tubs yet they managed something this core has never even sniffed at. Time for a culture reset.
Human nature described accurately in your post.

Yeah,

And this team needs a change, and Marner would accomplish that. He runs just about everything, and we end up playing perimeter pass it around style.

Getting even a decent package for Marner could free up quite a bit of cap, and also force the team to adopt a better playoff style.

Marner was also acting like a little bitch at the beginning of the year. I honestly think he is not a great influence on the team.

I like him as a player, but that's who I'd move on from if we're unloading one of the "big 4"

Tavares.......you don't even ask the guy to waive his NMC, that's just a Sundin situation all over again.
I'm sorry to be that guy, but this is just so damned easy to refute.

There are ways and places to see where events happen on the ice for the team.

Marner plays most of the time with Matthews or Tavares.

Matthews and Tavares do almost all of their work in the 15 feet in front of the net.

The main culprit for the power play passing too often is that there is no shooting threat on the blue line, other than Matthews when he's there, and the penalty killers can really cheat on the half-wings.

Ovechkin and Stamkos had tons of success because they were always left open. Why were they left open so often?
John Carlson and Victor Hedman can shoot the puck well.

That this team has had a great power play despite not having a threat at the point is a testament to how great the individuals have been at creating and finishing chances.

Fair enough. And I say you don't know what market value is.

Matthews is not worth what he's asking. Nylander is not worth what he's asking. Both would be overpaid based on the information that's out there. Marner is already overpaid and any raise would only worsen the situation.

Asking beyond your worth is greed. It's their right but gotta call it how it is.
I wish they played as hard on the ice as they do at the negotiation table.

Burke claimed that he used to operate that way too. He makes calls all the time and he answers the phone all the time (as a GM).

He needs to do a lot more than find the open slot area and wait for Mitch to find him and boost his scf% The guy wants to be the highest paid player in the league. He needs to play like it all times
