There's zero urgency.

I think the best move is actually waiting 'til the deadline to see where the team is and see who's willing to make a big overpayment to have Willy.

Nylander doesn't necessarily have to get done now. He's still under contract with TOR for 1 more season. If his NTC kicks in Toronto are more limited, but this should not be impossible.
Oh I know, was just asking if he expects it to happen today.

shanny really f’d things up. we’ve had like a 7 year window to compete with 100+ pt reg seasons, and he had a gm and coach learning on the job…. so much valuable time wasted. now Tre is put in a tough spot, with little familiarity with the group, and little flexibility… and little time.

From what we've heard Treliving loves to talk.

It has been reported in many reports, he talks to everyone all the time.
I sure William is also talking to his father Michael looking for advice.

His dad was a tough sign in his day never feeling he was getting paid fairly and moved around teams as such chasing $$$.

Human nature described accurately in your post.
You can hinder nearly anyone with comfort. Even driven people like professional athletes are less driven with more comfort. It's a rare individual who fulfills their full potential in comfort. That's why I was always in favour of seemingly superficial stuff like dress and grooming codes. That's a minor taste of discomfort without any cruelty.

Anyone who's gone anywhere in life has learned this lesson as well. The second you get comfortable is the second you stop progressing.

The difference is McDrai scare opponents. AustonMarner scare nobody in the playoffs. Yeah but McDrai did not score in the last 4 games vs Vegas, blah, blah blah. I'd take McDrai over AustonMarner every day of the week and twice on Sunday. Anybody that would not is full of shit. Pure and simple.
That is the sad reality people wont acknowledge. Our players are over rated prima donnas...

I’d move him anyway. We’ve desperately needed a change for the past 3+ years on this core. A different forward, a top D or a package of forward/D.
And then if Marner wants 12 million or more, I’d move him too.
Both marner and Matthews have NMC tomorrow.

With both of them the ball is in their hands, Leafs are the patsies here.

Leafs option is to sit them, cut their ice time, take them off the powerplay, ...

The tail is stronger than the dog.

Warden the insider! :sarcasm:

I think this is something that happens in late July/August. They will keep hammering and hope for some budging.

They have more control today versus tomorrow

Although the return would be much better if they're doing a sign and trade or he wants to sign with where he lands.

Yep, doesn't take Sherlock Holmes to figure this out.

Though whether or not it was just innocent small talk, or trying to plant a narrative is up in the air Force

They do. But they waited until 2 days before July 1st, so I don't think they are desperate in that sense. The teams on his Ntc are not likely teams that will want him anyway.

They will figure out later... For better or worse.

Terrible move, imo. Play 70% of the season with him, then move him at the deadline just as the team prepares for a playoff run?

I'd much rather go into the season with the team mostly in place.

Oh sorry.

IMHO Treliving is concentrating on tmo's free agent signings.

But (big but)

Unless there's a great offer for Nylander by a team who's not on Nylander's no trade list.
I believe today is also RFA qualification day. I believe a Samsonov contract needs to happen today as the Leafs really don't want to qualify him then later face an arbitration award they can't pay and after all alternative goaltending options have been snapped up.

Lewis Gross at this point has been too much of an annoyance for me to believe they will figure it out.

I'd rather pull the chute.

Then sign Matthews long term, trade Nylander for the best package you can get, give Knies/Robertson/Lily every chance to succeed in the lineup, and collect as many draft picks as you can.

If Marner’s ask is too high, you can ask him to waive his NMC or let him go Johnny Hockey style.

You might be correct, I don't think so.

If he's dealt today it is as a 1 year rental.

Tomorrow he can be re-signed, or trade to 21 teams, or signed and traded to a team of his choice.

There are more options tomorrow.

There is no rush at all, they don't play until October.
July 1st in not a pressure point for the Leafs with Nylander as a 10 team NTC is no big deal to navigate around if need be.

In fact I'd agree waiting if trading is an option because after the 1st waive for free agency blows over and their are teams with open chairs that missed out, then Nylander's value increases in trade.

A sign and trade adding an extra year (8) on a re-sign first, similar to the Winnipeg PLD trade returned 4 assets, and would maximize Leafs return as well if replicated and Nylander and his next team are in agreement. Trading him today is as a 1 year rental.

The real problem with re-signing Nylander is the current Marner contract being used as Willy's internal comparable,

Hid dad was a tough sign in his day never feeling he was getting paid fairly and moved around teams as such chasing $$$.

Funny, a marner lover just asked how long do we point to the father?

Nylander has been in the Leafs org for 9 years, Michael I think was 5 years with Flames as his longest stay.

I agree but it does not appear Shanny does. If Shanny and Tre can't see Mitch asking for more than $12m in two years, they are not qualified to do their jobs.
