Yeah, but think about how good it’d be for the players if they never had to go to Edmonton, Winnipeg or Ottawa

Places where hockey actually matters? Yeah, terrible.Yeah, but think about how good it’d be for the players if they never had to go to Edmonton, Winnipeg or Ottawa![]()
Ok. I think that Nylander > Tavares but it's close, and we can disagree. My original response agreed that Tavares was overpaid but IMO Tavares the UFA > Nylander the UFA. IIRC Tavares finished 2nd in the scoring race on year, beaten by Benn in his last game of the season. Nylander is great but I liken him to Kessel. Great player but not somebody you hitch the cart to.
As for $11m, no Leafs is worth that cap hit in a salary cap world today. Matty gonna get lots more than that coming off an 85 point season though and he will also be overpaid IMO.
I agree that with the way Mitch is overpaid, we should get a better return on Willy, but we've seen very good players leave before now, with no torch-carrying mobs appearing. You don't drop a person off your roster like Marner and take the playoffs for granted. If mgmt had move Marner and the Leafs missed the playoffs, not only would all the executive be fired but Scotia arena would be in flames.
These kind of calls make some people feel like they have balls but it is so devoid of any realistic practical scenario. Who do u get for Marner? Quinn Hughes? Good fing luck. You don't even propose a trade for a superstar. Way easier to get a return on a Willy talent than a Marner because there are just so few
Leafs haven't missed the playoffs for a stretch. Longest current playoff streak with Boston. Before that the made the playoffs once in 11 years. There are players that are drafted that are as old as when that dark age happened.I agree that with the way Mitch is overpaid, we should get a better return on Willy, but we've seen very good players leave before now, with no torch-carrying mobs appearing.
Who really cares about half the teams anyway?

JT was a player you could hitch your cart to. Why else would the Leafs pay him $11m x 7 and Isles offer him $11mx8? Sadly not the case after the first couple of years here. In hindsight, JT @ 11m was not a move we needed to make but had we parlayed Kadri into a solid dman, things could have been different. Then again, we were probably doomed the day Shanny decided to handed the keys to a rookie GM.Ok. I think that Nylander > Tavares but it's close, and we can disagree.
I don't mind JT, but I don't think he's a player you "hitch the cart to" either. Actually similar to Kessel in that he wasn't what we needed at the time.
* Stanley cup that year* beside the Play-in year.
With hindsight, no one could disagree with that.JT was a player you could hitch your cart to. Why else would the Leafs pay him $11m x 7 and Isles offer him $11mx8? If the Leafs do win a cup with this core, as Shanny says they will, it will be off the backs of 34 and 16 IMO. Willie could be the man like Phil was for Pittsburgh. All 3 have need some degree of playoff growing to do. My concern is if they haven't figured it out in 7 playoff runs, will they ever ?

My boss also got a boss. For players to take cutbacks, i belive the management need to show they are more serious about winning then making money. This does not start with the players, it starts with the owners, GM and Coach. If they get players that is not on board with the vision it is on the management. Decide what u want get rid of everything that dont follow your plan.
Anyone know what the vision is? Other then winning the cup.
Feels like they are just putting out fires.. and not realy well..
Interesting way to look at it. Let's hope 16 and 34 figure it out because I can see Nylander and/or Brodie being moved out to free up cap space and bring in a dman that plays a heavier game. The bolded is an... interesting way to bridge a reality you recognize with the desire to blame the guy you never liked.
Dubas/Shanny bet on M&M&N and have, to this point, lost. If you're lamenting losing the bet and whether or not that group will ever have "it" we weren't doomed when we chose the bettor, we were doomed when we chose the bet. You can't have it both ways.
The thing that bugs me is the lack of decisiveness. We didn't need to be in this cap jam, and we didn't need to set this year as a one and done where everything surrounding the core gets blown up again.Interesting way to look at it. Let's hope 16 and 34 figure it out because I can see Nylander and/or Brodie being moved out to free up cap space and bring in a dman that plays a heavier game.
He' the TML Man of Mystery who prefers to live in NYC and enjoy theatre/arts while calling Trev and telling him what to do or not do. An absolute joke of how this team ( an icon among sports teams) is handled. Its really ming boggling....the ineptitude, stubbornness, lack of vision, willingness to do what it tales to win..I can go on but you get my drift...Come on Shanny deserves every penny, he shows such amazing leadership that it’s a no brainer he deserves to be the highest paid exec in hockey. Think about all the important stuff he did, like… well ok but I’m sure he’s doing a lot of super secret stuff behind the scenes that earn him his luxurious New York lifestyle.
True, and (anti)social media gets people a lot more worked up over insignificant stuff nowadays.Leafs haven't missed the playoffs for a stretch. Longest current playoff streak with Boston. Lou offering him $11M x 8 (I've heard as high as $13 x 8) was just Lou being Lou - knowing there was no way JT would accept, it was pure PR.JT was a player you could hitch your cart to. Tavares WAS the Isles while he was there, he was the driving only driving force they had, and he single handedly got them into the playoffs a few years.Lou offering him $11M x 8 (I've heard as high as $13 x 8) was just Lou being Lou - knowing there was no way JT would accept, it was pure PR.
I agree that Dubas thought JT was "a player you could hitch your cart to" (why else pay him $11M x 7?), but he never was on Long Island, and not here.
You say "in hindsight (it) was not a move we needed", but there were some posters, myself included, who said that from the start. MOre and more people are seeing that (in hindsight).
The rest I agree with.

That's mostly speculation. The 'snub' was much more than that - he intentionally made them believe he would re-sign there after his contract expired, so they wouldn't trade him. How would you react if Matthews says he'll re-sign here after this coming season, and then just goes elsewhere for less than we offered?Tavares WAS the Isles while he was there, he was the driving only driving force they had, and he single handedly got them into the playoffs a few years.
if JT wasnt as important as he was, they wouldnt still be booing him every time he touches the puck. Its more than just the snub, his leaving took them from being an actual contender to being nothing more than a spoiler team if they get a lucky bounce.
They still havent recovered from his leaving.
If he had resigned, they would have been a contender, but without, they are maybe a playoff team.
I refuse to believe it will be off the backs of 16 as well as he's showed absolutely nothing in the playoffs. Dude has no B game to revert to when the A game is not working.JT was a player you could hitch your cart to. Why else would the Leafs pay him $11m x 7 and Isles offer him $11mx8? NYI won one round with him and missed the playoffs most years. The best years they’ve had were right after he left. The Leafs were on the rise until he arrived in Toronto and it’s been a stinky mess since.Tavares WAS the Isles while he was there, he was the driving only driving force they had, and he single handedly got them into the playoffs a few years.

Shanny = Gary Betman and the NHL office runs the Leafs by stealth. I can't be sure but the one thing that stands out was we were the test platform for NuHockey (Soft hockey).
Well said....Do as I say not as I do leadership is really the best type of leadership. The players need to take less, but he sure doesn’t even though he’s already rich from his playing career. The players need to show up and work harder than anyone else in the league, he puts in a casual 20 hours a week and most of that is probably travel. The players need to love Toronto, he lives in New York. The players need to play as physical as the rules will allow, he’s the #1 driving force behind neutering the league over the last 20 years.
