I just love how Nylander has averaged 18 min of ice time for the past 4 years while Marner has averaged 3 and a half minute more per game while being played with Matthews most of the time...
Interesting to see what Nylander would do if he got 20 min/game on a team that gave him the chance....

If the NHL operated more like the MLB where the Leafs would receive a pick for losing Nylander as a FA then I would agree.

I highly doubt the Jays will move Chapman this year and he will almost certainly walk as a UFA.

The Leafs past playoff failures have left me skeptical if they can really make a run with this core, but I could see why BT would think about giving it one shot if he thought he could surround them with the right guys.

The signings of Domi and Bertuzzi tend to lead me to believe they are going to go for it again this year, and unless they get the right deal I don't see Brad just trading Nylander for the sake of trading him.

We all know that Tavares is the guy that needs to go but that’s can’t happen.
As far as for Willy he is a decent player but at 10 million and Matthews potentially going to be 14 million and Marner potentially going to be 12 million and Tavares at 11 million you just can’t have all that on one team, not to mention that despite all their individual talent they just don’t cut it as a group.
We have multiple threads debating each of the cores individual merit but they need to be discussed as a collective
They just don’t work as a group and something has to give and unfortunately Willy us the only one left that they can do anything about.
And for willy to think he's better than aho is ludicrous
I think when these guts want to be UFA.s maybe have their agents come out an say the number of players that they'd trade 1 for 1 .
Nylander is not geaudreau pannarin l pasternak type of players
He is more just below a Tkachuk or aho
Maybe a bit above debrincat
His agent knows this .

I agree.

The objective is to win this year.

THIS year.

That means icing the strongest roster possible.
The only reason to trade Nylander now is to re-balance the roster. If they're gonna trade Nylander for Nylander-lite, they may as well just keep the one they got.

Getting weaker in a contention year is no way to win the cup.

Whatever it is they decide, I hope they figure it out soon. After five years of non-stop drama, it would be nice to watch a full season of hockey with only the relatively simple ups and downs associated with winning and losing. Instead of being preoccupied with everything off ice.

Like whether or not Nylander should be traded if he doesn't re-sign.

Good riddance to you in advance, Superstar William Nylander, if it does ever finally reach that point.
A good GM needs to think about both the present, and the future. Balancing those priorities is hard to do, still gotta try though.

We were focused on icing the strongest roster possible when we kept JVR as an "own rental", also when we signed JT and a ton of other decisions as well. I wonder if you'd do anything differently with the benefit of hindsight, I know I would.

If only they could find a team to give him that chance.

The leafs have two options. Trade him or resign him. After what happened in Calgary with Gaudreau, there is no way in hell Brad T is letting that happen a second time.

Either way Nylander is traded or signed. The longer it goes, the more I believe he will be signed. 0% he gets walked to UFA.

The whole mentality of "going for it this year!" is ludicrous, wasteful and pisses away the future for short termism.

You don't let a 40goal PPG guy walk because 'this might be the year" you could win the cup.

Leafs are not materially better than last year, still have major questions on D, questions in net. They've run the same basically everything back so far, I don't think we expect a different result.

Sign Willy or trade. Letting him walk for nothing a huge mistake.

This is what they have

G Murray, Woll Samsonov
D - Rielly, Brodie, McCabe, Liljegren, Giordano,Klingberg, Timmins.

If he won’t re-sign, get the best offer possible.

It’s a Travesty under Bettmans hockey we see our best playoff performer hung out there for trade talks. Nylander showed up more than Matthews.

We keep slow Tavares and weak Marner.

Tavares we knew this was coming… so be it.
Dubas was a sissy who got bent and loved it.

Marner needs to add 15 pounds of muscle.
Or he should be traded.
Guy is 160 pounds playing vs guys who are 220+

If you wonder why zero impact in physical playoffs that’s why.

Poor Nylander. He never got a chance...

My fav is “proven playoff performer”. Was a disgrace the first series this year, sheltered, offensive zone starts, defensive liability, on the ice for all kinds of goals, generally ridiculed by analysts, but ya what a warrior. Even last year, finally pots two nothing goals against TB when the game is over, context matters. I’m not saying he’s the worst in the playoffs, but this bs narrative around here is symptomatic of what is wrong with this fan base and team.

Change it to "proven playoff performer, compared to Marner", then it makes sense.

I think that explains most of the praise for Nylander. Some of the praise is maybe a bit much in a vacuum, but when you add the context of his teammate being paid tons more, and not contributing that much more (especially in the playoffs), Nylander looks pretty damn good.

He's not a great player, but they can get some value plus the cap space for him.

Cap space would have been useful three weeks ago. What are you going to do with it now other than pickup the leftovers no one else wanted.

It depends entirely on the trade. If there’s a good trade out there, do it. If you’re just getting a few futures in a meh trade then don’t. You’ll spend that much at the deadline for a few months of a guy half as good as Willy.

You just can't let Nylander walk. Even if it's a futures trade you pull the trigger and give that money to Tarasenko for 1 year. The following season you go out and sign Lindholm for no assets.

We can test how valuable cap space is since it is the #1 asset according to some on here.

I have a feeling we would spend it foolishly and be regretting it.

It would be hard for the Leafs to make a bad trade, though. They need everything.

One of the better looking disappointments?

While others are making 55%+ more than he is.

You don't even have to add the "paid tons more". Other than Rielly, who played better this year, especially against Florida?
