Any raise is too much IMO. I'm wondering what kind of a raise you think he will get from us?

For me it's mainly because of Marner, honorable mention to Matthews though for sure and the thought of both these guys getting raises from us is just so gross.
I split the hair 60-40 in favour of Marner just because of the culture that both players grew up in.

Lots of good players create chances by themselves, but they aren't necessarily line drivers.

On a contender, Nylander isn't the primary player on his line, he needs a better center to play with or his line is shit.

Marner is the primary player on his line on a contender, he doesn't need to play with a better center. He is what I would consider a line driver.
At even strength, Nylander and Tavares produced more goals than Matthews and Marner, in less ice time and with a weaker left winger.

Why do you consider their line shit?

Also, if Marner is a line driver but Nylander isn't, we should put Willy with Matty and Mitch with JT, right?

The rumour now is that Matthews isn't gonna sign until Nylander signs.

Good Lord.

Does Matthews really think Nylander is gonna sign first? And does this team not have any leaders for anything? Who cares who goes first anyway?

Just get it done and move on.

The longer this Nylander (and Matthews) negotiation drags out the bigger the distraction it will become. And make no mistake about it, this will be a major distraction if not taken care of before the season starts. Which is why it's so important they get it done soon.

There's already enough spotlight on this team.

Nylander is a good player. But he's only a winger. And he's the fifth best player on this team.

I can't think of a single argument that he should be earning the same as his much better teammates.

Including Matthews.
Is a team going to sign Nylander to a ridiculous contract in a sign and trade? He may be the guy walks to FA.

If that’s the scenario, do the Leafs play him? Does making the playoffs matter next season?

I can see a possible argument for fourth best, if you rank Rielly higher, but fifth?

Rumour being the key word.

I giess it depends on how you define line driver. To me because he is usually the one with the puck while on the ice, he drives the line. Everything runs through him. He is not as good as Marner doing it, but I still think he is the guy.

Except when he plays with Matthews

Thanks for the response.

Yes, I rank Rielly and Captain Boat Anchor Tavares higher.

A couple years ago I would have had Muzzin higher too. And if they had a good goalie, I would have him ranked higher in importance as well. I don't have a high regard for wingers in general, and Nylander is a one-dimensional winger, with little else to his game than rush offense.

I really hope they trade him more than anything if we are being perfectly honest here.

Send a message to the rest of them.

Given Treliving, and the team's, recent history, you might be right. Nothing would surprise me anymore. Heck why stop at Nylander?

They might just let Matthews go too.

I have no idea what Nylander's value is on the trade market. As a one-dimensional winger it's probably not much. I would start with the DeBrincat deal and go from there.

I wouldn't go far from there though.

Is that worth more to the team than using him as an own-rental? I don't know the answer to that. I guess that would depend on what they do with the assets and cap space they get in return.

If they just use it to replace Nylander with a cheaper Nylander, they may as well just pay the one they got.

Matthews and Marner are far superior defensively.

If Nylander believes he´s worth a lot more money than (for example) DeBrincat, he´s delusional.
He does have the right to ask for the soon and the moon, but this organization needs to understand, ONCE AND FOR ALL, that we cannot keep massively overpaying our best players. We have been down that road and it has lead to nowhere but pain.

I like Nylander a lot and but we can´t afford to pay him more than 8M maximum. If he´s not agreable to that, ship him to whichever team grants best return.

Nylander should just wait it out.

He doesn't need the money.

In the meantime this thread is seriously entertaining, and great for sitting down to chat with Rusty.
I agree it should be a game of chicken.

Doubt anyone offers a 72m contract compared to what the Leafs will offer at 71m.

The risk Nylander takes is he gets injured or has an off season. We seen lots of players lose money on contract years when they don't perform as expected.

It's hard to see Nylander maintaining 40 goals and 80 points into his 30s.

Hard for any player to maintain 40 goals. Heck, look at Matthews in the same playing time this year as Nylander he scored ... wait for it ... 40 goals and he's a Rocket man.

Again, I don't think money is a concern for Nylander, respect is though.

Wouldn't be surprised if he signed for less elsewhere.

Agree Matthews floor is Nylanders ceiling.

At Nylander's Cap + 65% it sure the heck better be.

Matthews should almost be lapping Nylander.

This should be unacceptable:

I suppose there are all kinds of precedents both camps will present for what they believe Nylander is worth.

I can tell you this much, I don't hold him in such high regard as he holds himself. I see him as the poster child for everything wrong with this team. Taking advantage of Dubas his first year on the job, while stealing the thunder away from the Tavares signing, left a bad taste in my mouth.

At the end of the day, he's a winger, and not even the best one on the team.

Trade him.

The way Nylander is carrying on, you would think he needed the money.

I don't think waiting it out is an option for him. Either he signs or he's traded. There is no other option.

It might still be both.
