thats great that, it means Nylander can fetch quite a bit in return for the leafs in a trade

Nylander and Marner are the luxury leafs cannot have in a cap world. Leafs have gotta choose one to keep and the other to trade.

Evidence from last 7 years has clearly suggested that the team cannot have success with such a cap allocation the way Leafs currently have.

I personally would prefer to trade Marner, but that ship has sailed on July 1st with full ntc/nmc of Marner kicking in. That means, by deafault Nylander either signs for 8 to 8.5 AAV or Leafs can work with Nylander to find him a team that will pay Willy 10 to 10.5 AAV and get a solid return for it.

Leafs have gotta move on and plan for other things as well. Its a team game afterall once individual isn't going to have significant impact on team results (unless ofcourse its McDavid but thats not the case ;))
Even before the NMCs kicked in, Willy was much more tradable than Mitch, but by corollary more worth keeping.

Now the only way to keep him is to tough it out for two more years until JT is off the books.

The ship has sailed for Matty and Mitch. Their full NMC kicked in July 1st. Lunacy is bringing them all back and thinking you can win with them by shuffling the deck chairs around them another year. At this point you have to overpay 16 and 34, let them walk for nothing or get them to waive.

There is still time to move on from Willie. With JT coming off the books in two years the cap could be more manageable with only 2 10+m players on the roster.
Brad has brought in some toughness maybe it’s enough, also I have more faith in Woll than Murray. I think we are a better team already.

You will pay more than florida teams for sure.
Maybe for certain UFAs in the free agent market, but we absolutely should not have to overpay to keep our own homegrown players that are pending UFAs, especially when we are in a window of contention.

A market like Calgary needs to overpay to keep good players long term.

The Toronto Maple Leafs should not have to...
The opportunity of putting on the Maple Leaf :leafsas an original 6 team and legendary team should actually be leverage a good GM would use to his advantage as a carrot and not a stick in contract talks.

Players should be willing to take less to have the privilege to done the Blue and White, particularly all those Ontario born kids that grew up idolizing the Leafs and would be fulfilling lifelong dreams to play on the team.

If a GM used exclusivity of a special team to his advantage then you should get better signings not worse. IMO

Max Domi a perfect current example of a player willing to take less then market to play for his fathers and his team now.

Remember Matthew Tkachuk and the label of him being complete trash and a playoff choker ? You're only a choker until you aren't, he has too much talent not to break through at some point.

My issue with Willy is when he gets scared of going after pucks and how bad he is defensively. He drives plays offensively but he's not a guy you can play in every situation. Marner on the other hand is the MVP of our PP and PK.

In a perfect world I'd love to keep them both. Gun to my head and I have to pick 1 ? Give me Marner.
Same

Gun to my head Matthews or Nylander

Nylander

The antithesis of our stars’ mindset and why the Leafs will never win with them. Unlike a sawth of recent examples of stars taking less, our guys just want every sliver of the cake and to eat half the other guys’ as well

——————-
Trade anyone that doesn’t take a team-friendly deal/modest raise.

We’re not asking any players to take a literal discount/ less money than current deals… is too much to ask of a player to be a team player and loyal enough to the crest to not demand a 3,4 mil raise in a cap era?

If there was no cap, was merely a soft cap/lux tax, shit, go nuts dudes. Get yourselves 20m/yr, we’d give no shits

Will and Auston say;

"We want to win, the negotiation"

It's so funny that everyone calls us a joke and honestly, we have been, and probably more now since the whole Dubas/Shanny fiasco, and then we expect players to want to come here and join a joke of an organization? We hope they take less too.

It's kind of interesting how so many star players talk about taking less to win almost like the unsaid part of the statement is "unlike those fancy guys in Toronto." They're all multi-multi-multi millionaires.

It is so funny when someone like Meier takes the market rate, but says he took less and our fans just believe it.

MacKinnon apparently took less too.

It's so funny people will eat up that someone took less when they actually didn't.

Toronto has no problems attracting free agents and people who want to be Leafs for a variety of personal, lifestyle, hockey and career building reasons. The funny part is people who seemed to think Kyle Dubas was some kind of player whisperer and without him everything would fall apart.

What are you talking about?

Meier took 8.8, he has never been ppg and is bad in the playoffs. Just because he said he took a discount doesn't mean he did.

Meier scored the exact same number of goals (40) that William Nylander and Auston Matthews scored in 2022-23. Bake in all other factors, is Nylander worth $1.2 million more, and is Auston Matthews worth $5 million more? Debatable.

The Irish coffee worked,I finally figured out why the big 4 always fail in the playoffs.

Their paychecks end when the regular season ends.

So,no pay,no play.
People have actually suggested this in a sort of roundabout very casual way, people who should know better:laugh:

Well, they are both better players. Matthews is significantly better.

Why compare to our players though? Why not just look at the statement and decide if it is valid?

To me, he did not take a discount, he is paid appropriately. He can say anything he wants, but it doesn't make it true.

A bunch of our fans quoting him is just funny. Because the statement fits their narrative but the facts don't.

Based on production last year they weren't, which is the point.

At least for Matthews you can make the point that he is a center and pretty decent defensively.

Yup ..

Nowadays the Leafs hand out the richest contracts in the NHL because they spend harder and not smarter, and don't leverage the opportunity to wear the Crest to their advantage.

When Dougie and Wendel wore Blue and White they bleed blue and white also, now its simply a means to get rich quick for players, so its all about their bank account and take home pay.

In Toronto they refer to this as "Blue and White" disease and comes with a feeling of self entitlement for players when entitlement should be a Team benefit to wear the jersey. IMO

I'm afraid for players like Willy and Auston new deals (In progress) its not about a proud tradition, as they're foreign players who spend their lives outside of Canada, and only using this process to work in a foreign country, extracting maximum earnings and then return home to native lands to retire on. Leafs don't have that leverage in this case, but in my opinion that level of loyalty should be a 2-way street that should allow the team to move on also, cutting off the gravy train when its no longer in the teams best interest to overspend.

When you cheer for the Crest on the front and not the name on the back it provides clarity in these situations. :wg:

A GM can and should draw a hard line in the sand and when push comes to shove be willing to move on from that player and replace them with other players if its in the vest interest of the team.

Only a 1 year sample size?

66pts in 78 games, 4pts in 11 playoff games for Meier
87pts in 82 games, 10pts in 11 playoff games for Nylander
85pts in 74 games, 11pts in 11 playoff games for Matthews (injured all season)

This looks terrible for New Jersey/Meier...

I was a bit surprised by how well that contract was received. I thought Timo made out quite well.

Does anybody else feel like this is a game of "you go first"?

I'll do if you do it. On the count of three. Are you ready?

1, 2 ...

They're like little kids, toddlers. Playing a game of "I dare you". Where the platinum card carrying members of this team try to convince each other to take million dollar pay cuts.

Seven years of failure and these losers are still at it.

Seeing their arrogance and greed are the best thing about being a fan of this team. Watching these guys screw the franchise over every which way possible is a lot more amusing than some might think. I just wonder if they realize the game has changed since Treliving took over.

It's gone from Wheel of Fortune to Press Your Luck.
