I think the team might need to rely on their amateur scouts and try to target future high end D in other team's systems in a Nylander trade because it's unlikely that Nylander will fetch an established high end D.

Ex. Jiricek in a Nylander trade to CBJ

He actually looks quite good in red (then again it's Willy, he looks good in just about anything).
What about a 12 year old Willy presenting the New York Rangers in a Quebec tournament?

William Nylander Absolutely TERRORIZES Defenders as a 12-year-old.

It’s just absolutely hilarious that we have been paying these guys 11+ million for what seems like forever now and the rest of the NHLs stars are just starting to catch up salary wise. When they start getting $11 million contracts, we’ll probably be paying out 17 million lol
Tkachuk just signed for $9.5. And we've been overpaying guys for 4 years now and they still haven't caught up with the world in hyper-inflation.. Just f-ing ridiculous how bad Dubas is/was.

In 5 years? I said it the moment he handed out the contract to Tavares and then to Matthews. Marner was another kick in the nuts after.

Kyle Dubas is the biggest anchor that has happened to this franchise since Ballard.

And no I am not over reacting. Dubas ruined the best chance this franchise has had in eons.
No. You are.

In a just world, this thread would morph into a comprehensive review of Aki Berg's glorious career as a Leaf.

What are those numbers in series clinching/elimination games?

Infinitely more?

Dubas is only on the hook for the last five years. Tre gets the next whatever.
That may be true but he is starting with one hand tied behind his back where as Dubas started with a young gifted core

I can see trouble brewing in the future that is impacting today's rate of pay for Willy.

Willy wants $10.5 mil per and Leafs want him at $8.5 mil price point.

Reason player usage.

What is going to happen to Nylander's production when Tyler Bertuzzi joins Matthews, Marner and Tavares with either Rielly/Klingberg on PP#1 and Nylander is forced off it and onto PP#2?

Willy's points production will drop and Bertuzzi with rise.. Then when WIlly in making $8.5 mil the Leafs can also re-sign Bertuzzi for $7.5 mil when both similar 30 goals and 70ish point players, using the $2 mil saved on Nylander deal now to afford the Bertuzzi raise next year, and be able to keep both players at $16 mil combined as opposed to Willy at $10.5 and letting TB walk as UFA because you can't afford him.

Good Cap management requires long-term planning not just year to year resets, whereas oversp[ending in 1 year has a domino effect on future years .. When players leave some money on the table it allows for a better surrounding cast.

Is Bertuzzi any good on the PP?

Actually, I don't see an issue for Leafs nor Nylander.

He's UFA and will move on and it isn't like teams will be dumb enough to ignore the usage.

He'll just have absolutely no loyalty for a team that undermined him during this year.

Leafs are just 1 of 32 teams in the league, and other than self importance they really aren't that good.

How can such greatness be confined to a single thread?

We need the Library of Aki the Great.

Besides the bad contracts, He should have surrounded the core four with toughness but he added more soft but not as skilled players.

But did he screw up by having them as the core or did he screw up by never actually getting the right suppoprting cast? I'm honestly not sure one way or another.
Possibly neither, or some combination.

There may have been a development malfunction. Not always easy to transition kids from junior to bigs. LouBabs seemed to be working through some sort of a program the grey hairs deemed necessary. The circus took over and now we coincidentally have a handful of elite talent that all can't win. Very suspect.

I recently saw a list of the top scoring right wingers in the last 200-220 games when talking about Nylander that had him around 5th or 6th in the league. Can’t remember if it was on tv or in a thread. Does anyone have a link to this? Talking leafs with a few guys and can’t find what I saw/read.
220 games is the last three seasons (56 + 82 + 82). Phil Kessel is the only RW to play all 220 games.

Among right wingers with 200-220 games in the last three seasons, Willy is:

- second in OT goals
- tied for third in ES goals
- fourth in goals and assists
- fifth in points, PPG, and PP goals
- tied for fifth in GWG.
- sixth in ES points (one behind fourth) and PP points
- tenth in shooting %

- sixth in PP TOI
- eleventh in ES TOI

Stats from NHL.com.

It didn't seem to drop when they had ROR take his spot on PP1 last year.

And if they play him with Domi at 2C and either Knies or Bertuzzi on LW, his ES scoring will likely go up. Even with JT still at 2C, a better LW than Kerfoot (any of Knies, Bertuzzi, or Domi) will help.

This fan base is just dumb. We just had a local guy leave here on the same deal, and we are fighting over what f***ing Nylander gets? What the f*** has Nylander done to get 10 plus? Oh he scored 90+points! Sure who did he play with? Some of the best ever! Ok no thanks! Unless it’s a championship no thanks. Dude floated literally floated on shifts in round 1 and we gotta pay him 10 mil nope!
