Imagine what the return would be for an extended 40 goal scorer if they need to break up the core.

I can’t imagine we’d get a lot more than Meier got. 2 late 1sts (one conditional) + late 1st prospect + young bottom 6er isn’t really doing much for us in the short run. It’s enough for a Muzzin/Chychrun/Ekholm trade or another O’Rielly level rental + smaller pieces.

Maybe there’s a world where it’s something like Nylander for JT Miller + Vancouver’s 1st this year, that’s the only kind of trade I can see where the roster doesn’t take a large hit up front and we add a potential difference maker in the draft.

You don't trade good players because salary cap, especially star players

The point is that while true in principle the existence of a hard salary cap can take that decision out of your hands. Doesn't matter how much you like a player if you can't fit them into your cap space.

(Plus in your original post you just said "keep" which I took to include the re-sign option. I don't think we're actually in disagreement here.)

But they can fit him in, he's under contract next year for 6.9 million, then the cap jumps significantly.

Until Matthews is taken care of you don't worry about Nylander

Personally I think that rather than blaming our good players for what hasn’t happened in the playoffs we should appreciate them for us being in the playoffs in the first place.

He is admittedly the first Leaf to ever go four games without a point (March 15-21), but we're ignoring the important question:

How hot should the tar be before we apply the feathers?

1. If you can convince Will to sign for 5 years 46.25 total, signing bonus 3 x 10 payable on labour day yrs 1, 3 and 4. Salary 5 x 3.25 AAV 9.25. LNTC 12 team NTC.

2. It would be tricky to do so, because if Will says yes to that contract, it's team friendly for sure, but the timing of putting this together is crucial, because if Will wants to stick around one of the big boys has to go. It won't be Rielly I don't think, as we really aren't flush with D prospects. Which means it's down to either 34 or 16, nobody wants to hear it but 34 with all the hardware is going to be more valuable, it's a business no matter what.

3.:laugh:  let him walk jeeebuzz cripes

Depends if he likes not being in the spotlight as much behind Matthews and Marner. Might want to be a franchise guy somewhere else.

Might be tough on the cap to resign with Tavares' last year still on the team.

You don’t let talent like Willy walk, but this is where it gets dicey.

Ideally you re-sign him, 8/9.25 or something and bonus it out the ass so he gets most of it up front.

But in no way shape or form is he an eight-digit guy; this year that six week stretch he went cold, that’s not what 10+ guys do. It happened last year as well - 15 points in 22 games Jan-Feb.

See how it shakes out and if his camp brings ten to the table, ship him - you’d get a lot; a PPG winger with 6.96 for another year, bidding starts at an unprotected 1st, a 2nd, your best prospect and the Leafs choice of money off your island of misfit toys.

Do not ship him somewhere in the East unless the doors are blown off. MSL wants to offer Xkehaj or whatever the f*** his name is along with an unprotected 1st and a 3rd then okay do it.

I’d happily have him back for 9 per, but he doesn’t deserve Mitch or Matthews level money.

Willy is a gamebreaker, he has had his off nights over the last month for sure, but, he has still for the most part looked dangerous, even when he's snakebit. You could tell by his defensive lack of detail he was losing a bit of focus on that part of the game. He seems to have his groove back over the last week, imo.

Saying $10+M guys don't have stretches of uninspired/lacking play is completely false. Auston Matthews is paid $11.6M to be an amazing goal scorer and an excellent defensive player, we got half of that this year, we only got a "good" Matty. Mitch Marner is paid $10.9M to be excellent at both ends as well, but, do people forget how uninspired and sloppy both of them were over about a 15 game stretch to start the season? Matty was put on Willie's line to get Matty going, and Marner was put on JT's line to get Marner going. All players go through a tough stretch here and there no matter the salary.

It's not lost on me that Matthews was likely battling something this year, but, Mitch wasn't.

Matthews struggling - (Fans) = must be hurt
Marner struggling - (Fans) = Linemates are costing him/"trying" too hard/ he'll be fine
Nylander struggling - (Fans) = he's so lazy/ let's trade him/ not good enough!

Willie should definitely be re-signed, but, Matty should be the priority. I'm hoping Willie comes in at under 8/9.5M. I'm not Kyle Dubas so I don't care how he gets it done, as it's not my problem. :)

Nylander's game translates into post season goals.

That's worth alot.

The same cannot be said for Matthews (11.8) and Marner (10.8).

Nylander is like our best value player. Would not like if we moved him unless we are going full tank and also trade Matthews, Marner, Reilly, etc.
