I prefer playoff Nylander to playoff Marner too and if you agree, I can't understand your willingness to pay Marner substantially more money.

Some people have said that contract are based on regular season performance, not playoffs. Maybe that's true but it's not the way I'd build a team. Call me old fashioned but I think playoff success>>>>>>>>>regular season success so I'll take the guys who don't wither away when the stakes are raised.

Based on line-mates and compensation ... it would tough to justify more money for marner if playoffs were key.

i honestly dont think playoffs hold a ton of weight in any sport when it comes to negotiations really.
But playoffs should be a prime consideration when deciding how to allocate your cap, if you're interested in playoff success that is.

I've heard this so many times - playoffs don't matter. Well they matter to me and I'm pretty sure they matter to many other Leaf fans as well. This core has won 1 playoff series in 8 kicks at the can, that's freaking pathetic. And then you get all the simpletons babbling about how these guys are the best ever, how they're super crazy elite and they're going to have all these records and have their statues outside the stadium. Makes me wanna puke.

I have a ton of respect for you as a poster, maybe you can help me understand why you think Nylander would be content with less than 11 when he's playing way better than Marner? Marner getting 11 is a given, and more than likely he'll get 12+ so what makes you think Nylander will settle for so much less?

Ha, I'm not sure I'd feel confident enough to make a wager but my rational is he/his agent is still constrained by market comparables - and this also applies for if he actually hits free agency in the summer and he doesn't quite have the track record of being a 90+ point player.

Prior to this season I'd say he was heading to an 8.5-9.5 mil x 8 contract. My newer numbers are more reflective of his current performances plus having a more accurate idea of what the cap will be.

I'd never say never about him making 11 mil aav. But I genuinely think the safer bet is an aav starting with a 10 (and a small chance in starts with a 9)

Leafs probably should have been a bit more aggressive trying to sign him this summer

I think people are going to be disappointed if their hope is one of the 4 is going.
IMO, Tavares will be re-signed and the other 3 will be here for most if not all of their careers.

Yep.

Front offices don't just decide to walk away from prime talent if they don't have to. The big 4 is becoming the big 3 with Tavares turning into a cheaper depth piece next summer.

Some folks have become too fixated on capspace. Capspace doesn't score goals or defend against them. The most likely use of it is on veteran free agents and regardless of how good your GM/scouts are, that can be a risky investment.

How many more kicks at the can do you pay these guys to see if they can get to done in the playoffs?
Same amount as Thornton/Marleau and crew got until they just declined beyond the point of doing anything. Decline plus high salary plus spinning wheels.
If this core can’t do it, not much we can do.
And we have a GM who gave Kadri a large deal and Huberdeau 10.5. So expect Nylander to get the same and Marner around the 12 mark. It could be an expensive wait.
We will either be Colorado or the Sharks. People have their opinions on who we are.

Odog has spent the last couple months talking about how crazy it is that Nylander might be asking for 10+. Now he claims he doesn't care how much Nylander makes and hopes he gets as much as he can and is sick of people talking about it.

patrick kane was the best winger in the NHL for a decade, between 2010 - 2020 he was top 4 in both goals and assists and had the most points of any player in the NHL in those 10 years with 802.

Yeah and he signed his contract in 2014 ? 2010-2020 timeframe really?

He was mentioning some article that Lebrun wrote asking rival NHL execs what they think Nylander will get.

Those are four very subjective opinions.

But yes, I do know (and told you) that he played centre in junior. I also told you that he was drafted as a centre, played centre in the minors, and still plays centre for Sweden.

And I didn't say "he deserve Pasta levels of pay".

Yeah I'm finding it difficult taking seriously the opinion of the person calling him a center

Manner played center in junior, was drafted as a W/C, he a center to? he could play in goal for Sweden for all I care because he's a winger in the NHL and that isn't changing

when they signed those contracts they were both widely regarded as 2 of the top 5 players in the league, with toews considered by many to be the 2nd best player in the game behind crosby. and way to go out on a limb and pick the outliers of all outliers lol. oh and 7 of the top 10 paid players as today in the NHL havent won a cup.

How come they don’t do articles like that for other star players ? It seems like everyone in the league is talking about Nylander contract, it’s super annoying

11x7=77
10x8=80

He will sign here for less AAV than he’d get on the open market
If he wants to be a Leaf like he says he does, those numbers make it clear as day that he should be signed already. Be interesting to know what is going on behind closed doors and why it has not been done already.

Considering the fact that 3% of NHL teams win the cup while 97% lose every single year you build the best team you can every year and try to win
Agreed and by the numbers we should have won the cup once every 32?? years but have not in 56 years and counting. We clearly are not doing something right.
