I wonder if Willy (or his agent) has considered what might happen if he coordinated a trade to a team where he would slot into a Pasta type role, how that season would go for him, and what offers he may be looking at next summer - first line minutes, guaranteed PP1 time, primary shooter.

Probably a much more lucrative path getting out of the third fiddle spot, where M&M are priority financially and on the ice, and it's not like he's getting the cup potential here that Kessel did with the Pens - after seven years of nothing we're now basically in disarray. Does he just love Toronto that much?

First of all, Willy is just not nearly as good as Pasta, who is an mvp-level forward.

Secondly, Willy's partner for most of the season was Matthews. Short of being traded to Edmonton, he's unlikely to find himself a better player as a partner.

But yes, he'd get PP1 on most teams, although being the focal point on PP2 is not the worst.

What a stupid contract Willie just signed, the Leafs signed him to FAR TOO MUCH!!! He didn't take a home town discount, he's over paid!!! He didn't sign for enough years!!!

... trying to get ahead of the angry mob ... ;)
Maybe the people in this mob are just like you

I have nothing to base it on and it could just be the Scotch talking but I don't think WN is a fan of Keefe
I don't think Keefe utilizes him as well as he could too

8x8 to 8.88x8 get it done!

40 goal second liner is awesome paired with those super speed zone entries.

Willy just needs a good winger who can get up and down the ice, and a C who will cover up the defensive end. Give him Knies and Holmberg and let him cook.

The Nylander/Tavares experiment needs to end.
Marner with Tavares, Domi with Matthews.
Yes, but you don't want Marner on the third line.

Leave him with Matty and Bert.

Knies, Domi and Nylander

He wants $10+m. Thinks 86 points is worth $1+m less than Pasta who put up 50% more goals and 27 more points. Then again we just signed 85 point Matty for $2m more than Pasta and for half the term.

He can do that but that's not really optimizing the lineup's strengths at all.

Giving Nylander a center with good playmaking skills who can actually play at his pace and I believe you'll get a lot more value out of the lineup using Tavares on the 3rd line with a couple of lesser skilled types.

Domi I understand is a pretty good passer but his defensive game playing center is terrible from what I've heard.
Is Domi's defensive game really any worse than JT's?

No thanks. 9m is the top for me. I would try and get him some more endorsements though if it had to be like that.

What's our boy Mitch going to ask for? 12.8?

If Mitch finally puts up 100+ points, he can ask for and/or hold out for Matty money.

With the cap going up @ 8 million over the next 2 seasons and JT being done costing 11 million after the next 2 years the Leafs will have 19 million plus whatever the cap goes up for 25/26 , call it another 4 million plus Mitchy's 10.9 million so another @ 15 million before Mitchy's next contract kicks in . Add this all up and you can see how stupid it is to include him in this discussion , whatever his next deal is it will most likely be a lower % of the cap than the deal Mathews just signed and he will likely still continue to put up more points per game in both the regular season and playoffs than any of the other 3 so maybe we just focus on what matters in this deal that needs to be signed this year eh !

They based it on his best points year because of the injury. I get what you mean though.

Marner is absolutely not worth much more than 10.

You have no idea.
Domi is however consistent.
He has been consistently in the bottom 1 percentile in the league defensively

Lol. Your hot takes are always full of great detail.

Try it again. By your own estimate, he'll lose +-$5M in his first 7 years playing for Toronto and additional money in year 8.

No need to be defensive, you omitted reality to suit your narrative which is fine if you're that kind of person. I just pointed out how stupid it is, he is not losing money signing 7 year deal for more AVV now despite your on purpose-misleading post comparing overall earnings over 7 years vs overall earnings over 8 year period.

You can't have it both ways. You wanna claim he'll be worthless in year 8 but at the same time, you're fine with Nylander @ 10M come year 8 if it's in Leafs uniform?

No, you try it again.

All I did was present a range of possibilities and comparisons at a range between $9 and $11 million on 7 and 8 years and express the absolute dollar value is not that far off.

Nylander signs 8 years in 2023, Leafs buy his aged 36 season at the value he is in 2023.

Nylander signs 7 years in 2023, I have no idea what he’s selling his aged 36 season for on the free agent market in 2032. That would be his risk, his upside.

Finally, a $11 million offer from Team X is a hypothetical on a hypothetical.

Though worth remembering stuff they trickles out from the media doesn't mean it's a lock to happen. I lost track of all the suggestions Matthews was going to sign for 3 years at 14-15 mil...

If Nylanders agent is starting discussions around 10 mil, it's going to mean his eventual contract will be lower. Especially with the number of comparables we have

So tell us then, what's he worth?

Johnny Gaudreau got 9.75 x 7 as a UFA, put up way more points / ES points than Marner ever has.

Marner is worth $3-4M more than him or what's the deal? Because as it stands Gaudreau is the most comparable player to Marner to hit UFA in recent years.

So basically you wouldn't resign a 100+ point player. You keep him for the year and lose him for nothing or you move him at the trade deadline before the playoffs.
Which one?
You are never going to get what you want in a trade for Nylander and 95% of people on this board have been crying about trading him for a less than stellar return. What you will get us 10 million in cap space.

If Matthews and Marner are Championship calibre (like Crosby and Malkin) making 13.25 and possibly 12, you should be able to retool around them with that available cap.

The time to trade Nylander was in the past. When we signed JT.

How are the Leafs in disarray? I truly don't understand this fan base. You have a top 5 team in the NHL, a team that now probably has the best chance it has ever had to reach the Cup final, and you call that disarray?

Willy is 31st in the league in PPG among forwards over the last 2 years. Just for context here are some of the names he's surrounded by. He has a lot of reason to believe that he can produce more with more minutes and opportunity.

Just outside the list is Tavares at .98. If we lose Nylander - our secondary scoring is now relegated to Tavares leading the charge. That's going to suck, 27 year old Nylander is the far more logical option to keep but here we are in this bad situation.

Nylander is the guy we need to remain an elite offensive team. The offense is going to seriously lack pop beyond line 1 without Willy here.
