Not grounded in reality or anything and hardly something that would be used but it was interesting.

My buddy looked at some game score calculator and it showed Matthews was worth the max and signed for 81% of that and applying the same thing to Nylander resulted in Nylander being worth around 9.2M x 8 years...so 9.5M x 8 years (contract structure matters) should technically be fair.

Marner was worth like 10.7M

JT worth around 8.1 or 8.9M - I forget which
 
Yeah, Willy's going to ask for $11m, and he'll get it, either here or somewhere else.

What a shame we can never get any of our big guys on a steal deal like the Oilers did with Draisaitl or the Devils did with Hughes. Our guys explode during contract years and aren't willing to leave a penny on the table. Not locking up Nylander in the off-season is going to cost us big, just like it did with Marner's last contract.

That game score calculator is a useless pile of shit if it said Matthews is worth more than Willy after that game.

This guy. Anyone still not liking him needs to get over themselves. Whether it was the holdout which was years ago in which he has vastly outplayed the contract he ended up signing. Or the Cherry/Baghead/blue collar propaganda. He's awesome. Get over yourself.

This is why you extend your franchise players early rather then give them an opportunity to have a monster contract year (Nylander is on pace for 55 goals and 120 god damn points). If you don't think your franchise players will outperform the contract you give them, you trade them.

Last year was the year to lock in that discount which was reportedly around 10-10.5. Now that the cap is going up and conservatively, Nylander looks like a 90 point player AT WORST, it's not happening anymore.

Some players that extended early: Jack Hughes, Pastrnak (his previous deal), Mackinnon (his previous deal), Keller, Chabot, Sanderson, Stuzle

Examples of players that weren't given long term extensions: Tkachuck (demanded trade), Laine (demanded trade), Kotkaniemi (offer sheeted), Shea Weber (offer sheeted), PK Subban (had a monster year, became much more expensive) <---- This is what Nylander is about to do.

I don't think Nylander signs until the offseason - he doesn't want to get screwed again and likely will want his and Marner's extension to be equal.

He must have felt awful when he signed 6.9M and Marner signs 10.6M a few months later

Yep, I think this is the best approach.
Just get him signed and accept that you could possibly take a little step back next year but that's better than losing him for nothing or making a poor trade.
Might have to really rely on some of our youth next season to step up and hope for the best.

Yeah, it makes little sense to let Willie walk, only to let Tavares contract run out the next year. If anything, Willie and JT will be switching cap hits after 2025 without much of a change in the rest of the cap structure.
