You don't have any way of knowing that's true more than I do. And either way, so what? He's an extremely valuable asset right now with only a limited NTC. He's probably the most valuable trade bait this team has had in decades. Throw away everything I said about his motives and think about just that part. We can talk about the motives next year if they re-sign him and see if he follows in his dad's footsteps or not. They can't afford him BTW if he keeps playing this well - you're looking at $11M at this point given his equivalents on the team.
Knowing what's true?

I stand by what I said - you speculating about his father saying "Make sure you play the best hockey of your life going into free agency and take every penny you can."? is cynical, very cynical even and is directly contradicted by the fact that this would be his 3rd career year in a row..

Never mind Nylander or Marner.

Jared McCann had 40 goals last year (same as Matthews) and is on pace for 35 goals so far this year.

Say, didn't Dubas give up McCann in order to keep Holl in the expansion draft?

That was a good decision, right?

This is his first UFA contract is it not? And his dad literally did what you say is me being cynical 3 times if I remember correctly. You're probably right. What about the valuable asset part?

But not really. Michael Nylander was fairly consistent in his career, producing at a top six rate throughout his prime - it's not really a pattern of only producing during contract years Michael Nylander Hockey Stats and Profile at hockeydb.com

Yes Michael Nylander did move around the league in terms of contracts. But Willy's career is already on a very different path - he's been with his home drafted team for 9 seasons (so far)

See the post below yours.

I think we can all agree he's a valuable asset, I hope he's a Maple Leafs for many years to come.

I've decided to abandon this part of the discussion (because there's no way to prove it) and focus on the fact he's the most tradeable asset they've had in decades. When was the last time they had a guy they have control over that's this good that they also won't be able to afford to re-sign? Any comments on that? Would you trade him for a genuine No.1 goaltender or first line defender or a couple of firsts?

But do you hope for that more than possibly addressing another need or saving $11M in cap space? Because that's the decision for sure.

We really need to hang on to this guy, even if it's 10 x 8. Next year will be rough but when JT is off the books it will work out.

It won't be though. He looks tangibly better than Marner out there and possibly even Matthews. If I'm his agent, it starts at $12M hoping to settle at $11M based on their salaries. How many $11M+ players can they really sustain? And again, Nylander is the only one they have leverage over.

Willie will sign with the Leafs, at least that’s what I am hoping for.
He just doesn’t strike me as a guy who wants to play in a new environment at this point of his career. Unless Engvall, Sandin, Mango, Kap and Alex all plays on the same team and that team wants to sign Willie. It is very hard for me to see him leaving TO.
Ofcourse if the diff in salary is over 3mil a year, he should leave.

Also who changed the title and when did it happened? It is not either or between Willie and MM. Leafs can have both plus AM and McD, lol.

How can’t you afford your best player who’s still probably the cheapest even after this contract common sense says you trade someone else if you have to but you keep the cheaper better player and not to mention he’s the only one of true three with three years consecutive beating his career highs you don’t trade that

Save the 11 mill somewhere else you have to

Knies Matthews ________
Robertson McDavid Cowan
Minten Domi Jarnkrok

How about we don't overpay for wingers and non-franchise Cs.

Because they've already committed to other guys all with no movement clauses and there's only so much money to go around. Nylander is going to be looking for a $4M raise and just happens to be the only star on the the team they have leverage over right now.

He isn't signing an extension elsewhere.

Which teams (not on his list) are going to give up a tonne for less than 1 year rental for Nylander?

I don't disagree with the sentiment, other than the garbage about his father. He's already said he didn't like moving around as a kid. He wasn't in control then, he is now.

Which GM is going to trade their best or second best forward on their first year in charge of a team that they have to prove themselves to?

Without Nylander Leafs are probably the Oilers right now.
