There is a difference between being scared and thinking you will get hit so trying to avoid it...

He should have taken the hit and had the puck taken away that way though, you're right.

Nylander's pull up in the corner/for any puck battle where he might get hit is much, much worse.
He should have hit him himself is what he should have done. Just brace yourself, keep the forward motion driving into him leading with his shoulder is the instinctive play if you're not afraid of contact. If he does that then he doesn't get hurt, they take each other out of the play and all is good.

It's cool though the way you deflect all criticism of Marner by pointing to Nylander, Kucherov or whoever else. Not a good look sir, there's nothing wrong with every once in a while just admitting that Marner does some really dumb shit every now and then. And that dumb play resulted in giving up a short handed goal, saying that Nylander pulling up on occasion (and not, it's not always) is much, much worse is just ridiculous and a very biased point of view.

Willy wants a big payday, and is making a hard case for it, Bertuzzi and Domi not so much. I always loved the Bruins legend Johnny Bucyk, he only signed 1 year contracts, said it kept him honest. They don’t make em like that anymore………
I didn't realize that about Bucyk, that's pretty amazing. I do remember that he was a very respected player, as classy as they come and they called him chief.

The level Nylander is at right now, Marner has never reached this level in my eyes. How can Marner ask for more money on the next contract and also Nylander is worth 10 million. Marner will not take a paycut, it will be very interesting to see Marners next contract.
Marner was already overpaid so if he doesn’t accept pay cut then trade him

Everyone loving nylander and it’s fair but I want to see this success vs top teams not bottom feeders

Marner got $10.9M in a season where he put up 94 points with his centre scoring 47 goals. I know it's way too early however, Nylander is on pace for 123 points playing with Bert who is literally on pace for 23 points, and JT who's on pace for 35 goals. I know Dubas messed up player values on this team, and I know Marner's deal was a bit rich, but I can't help but feel like Nylander might look at Marner and be like "I'm not making less than that guy on my next deal" and I wouldn't blame him. Not after Matthews cashed out (when looking at term atleast). If Nylander wants to stay in Toronto i'm sure he knows that $11M here is not possible (especially with MItch Money next on the docket), but based on his play so far He looks like he'd be able to get that on the open market.

I think you have to be calling his agent and saying they’ll give him his 10, maybe 10.5.

Sammy probably gone, 3.5. Backups are cheap.

Brodie gone or cut to 3.5.

Klingberg gone, 4.15.

Gio retires but he can come back in league min if he can play.

Murray and Muzzin off books.

Liljegren has earned a modest but not backbreaking bump.

Domi and Bert, one gone. Bert has more goals and he also had heavy minutes with Mitch and Matthews.

Robertson we’ll see looks like a candidate for a small bridge, Knies still has a year.

There will be money for it.

That was a nifty little no look pass to JT. Had that been Marner, I bet we'd have seen a dozen posts by now about Marner's vision and how "super crazy elite" he is. Anyhoo, hope we win this one. Things have gotten a bit dicy.

Nothing Nylander can do trumps Marner's reputation. What's worse, they opt to ignore anyone's achievements unless it's Mitch Money.

It happens if you convince yourself secondary assists and unassisted goals are equal.

Need Marner to find mid-season form quick to offset that goaltending.

Can you imagine Marner getting hot and Nylander being hot at the same time. Won't even need defence because the opponent will never touch the puck.

I've changed my tone now regarding this. Just figure out the Nylander contract, pay him over 10 per, if it comes to that. You have to retain this player, he's going to score 50 goals and 50 assists. He looks like Selanne out there.

If Nylander's contract costs us Marner in the future, it is what it is, but that is 2 years away.

Yep gotta keep the goal scorer that has the wheels and can also make plays and get the zone. If only he was a C that would seal it

Or if not less, than at least not a lot less. I could see him not being too happy if he signs for say 10 million, and then watches them give Marner 12.1 million or WE not long after. Maybe if the Leafs sign Marner for first for 11, they could then sign Willie for 10.5? If he keeps playing the way he is though, even that won't be enough.

If I had to guess, I'd say Willie's playing for another team next year. I hope I'm wrong but there it is. I feel like we will blow more futures at the TDL, our cupboards will be empty, the future will be bleak and he'll go somewhere with a brighter outlook for the future. Some young upcoming team makes a lot of sense to me, maybe Chicago would be interested who knows.

Nylander is playing himself out of our price range. There is a point where Treliving will look at the cap with $35m committed to Matthews/Marner/Tavares next season and when Nylander hits him asking for 11m, Treliving will blink.

Nylander is having his career year in a contract year at age 27. I don't know how many times people need to see it to learn from it. He's phenomenal and it's and absolute travesty that he's the one we're going to lose when he's the one we should keep. Bask in his play right now because this might very well be the hottest run he ever has as a pro, and what an astonishing achievement it is. Testament to his hard work and dedication, and I'd love nothing more than to have him in a Leafs uniform for the next decade.

Here's what should happen: Marner should be traded and Nylander re-signed.
Here's what should happen if we can't trade Marner: Nylander should be moved at the deadline for one of the largest rental packages in league history.
Here's what's going to happen: we're going to spend our futures at the deadline and either miss the playoffs narrowly or lose in the first round again, then Nylander is going to walk as a UFA to the team that will give him the 10.5m a year that we simply cannot afford to pay him because we've already got 35m committed to three guys who can't lead us out of a paper bag.

He's come a long way since he came in out of shape after negotiating his contract. He's a must sign now, even if it sets us back one year until JT is off the books.

He's playing on both sides of center ice now.

He definitely takes off soon, but that does force the defenders to back off. For the most part they can't skate with him anyway.

There is debate about Yzerman. Some think he changed/adjusted his game and then the winning began. Some think the winning began and Yzerman just kept on playing in a more low scoring era.

However ... Yzerman was points leader on the Wings, and won the Selke the same year at age 34. At age 36 he had most points in their Cup win.

I know it is Simmons ... and it is about Matthews, but can this apply to Nylander?

Is there a coach who can facilitate this transition?

hope his run doesn't end with a extension, this better not be a temporary improvement to get paid............

No more NMCs anymore. Limiteds only
don't hold your breathe on that, he's getting what 34 got, book it.........

I think the only coach that can potentially facilitate that is likely Queenville but...there is too much crap surrounding him IMO. The other one would've been Barry Trotz sadly.

Not touching that link and will take your word for it, can't stand Simmons.

I fully understand that. I am just trying to stress how critical it is that Toronto gets Willy extended. At the end of the day if we do lose him, it is because of Tavares‘ $11M aav. Treliving has to tell him that we need you to waive your no trade or something.

elite players with the skill set like Willys are far and few around the league.

I think a blockbuster deal with Calgary and maybe a 3rd team might go a long way to fixing some holes on this lineup and also making signing Nylander easier.

I haven’t run any numbers, but I think tre might have to make a big swing here with a lot of players and assets involved to try to kill a few birds with one stone.

Another 10 players deal?

I wish we took Trotz.

I could see Boudreau, or torts or Boucher finishing out this year and maybe next?

But I’m in the camp of Quennville being the next full time coach of this team.

There is no hockey reason to not do that, imo
