Why William Nylander is choosing to stay in Toronto says a lot about the Maple Leafs
Nylander can make more money elsewhere, but it comes down to pressure, and in Toronto there is none

Kelly might be one of the worst sports "journalists" in the city, which is saying something. The Globe has gone downhill in a lot of ways, and it was never much for sports to begin with, but this guy is a far cry from Brunt or Proudfoot.![]()

The question isn't even what we could have done with an extra 3.5m, because an extra 3.5m was never an option.
We had two options. Pay them the reasonable contracts they got, consistent with post-ELC contract history. Or offer the above and watch them laugh at the insult and leave.
We'd have a lot of cap space then. A horrible team, with all our best players gone and no way to replace them, re-entering an endless rebuild, but lots of cap space.

The outside pressure in Toronto is nil, but people never shut up about all the pressure – so it’s even less than nothing.
Hockey players feel more pressure in Anaheim or New Jersey. Failure in those cities has a visible effect – it’s staring you in the face in the form of empty seats. In Toronto, it always looks as though the team is winning. Whether it is immaterial.
Even if we chose to and could match offer sheets, that would leave us worse off than what we ended up doing. The worst-case scenario would be Leafs matching offer sheet
Actually two offer sheets happened. The other signed before offer sheets were an option, but he would have absolutely got them too.*not to mention no offer sheet happened
Domi was a decent gamble (he got 56 f***ing points last year). He's not playing like his usual self and neither is Bertuzzi. Both these players played on other teams with grit. And it's not happened here. I dunno why that is but it's not a coincidence.I can't give specifics because I don't know who was, is, or will be available. But don't fall into the trap of thinking 'who could I get for $3.5m', thats not it. Rather its who could I have gotten INSTEAD of Domi for $3.5m MORE than I paid him...or what kind of D-man could I have for $5.5m INSTEAD of McCabe for 2m. Or maybe even better, how many players can you take on around the trade deadline if you have an extra $3.5m to fit a trade candidate under the cap.
I don't believe this was ever verified, just the marner fans stating it?Actually two offer sheets happened. The other signed before offer sheets were an option, but he would have absolutely got them too.
If he is not signed by the deadline he has to be moved. At this point I’m more worried about convincing Nylander to stay on this shitshow team.
It was explicitly verified by Marner and his team.I don't believe this was ever verified, just the marner fans stating it?
You don't believe? Marners agent publicly said Dubas knew about one of them yet no refutation...but you don't believe just because.I don't believe this was ever verified, just the marner fans stating it?
Columbus supposedly spoke to the agent about a 7 year deal but marner/agent wanted a 5 year one but no confirmation of a dollar figure.
Columbus would not surrender 4 1st rounders for 5 years (no team would) so it very well may have been smoke and mirrors from the marner camp ... manufactured sleight of hand ....
i mentioned the agent ... but agents and gm's always tell the truth lolYou don't believe? Marners agent publicly said Dubas knew about one of them yet no refutation...but you don't believe just because.
All a myth, he was never going to sign an offer sheet.i mentioned the agent ... but agents and gm's always tell the truth lol
regardless, i suppose the real question is - would we be better off if we had taken the 4 1sts? also, marner did not sign a rumoured offer sheet so it becomes irrelevant ...
The 22-year-old declined to say whether the either of the offer sheets were worth more than what he signed for in Toronto.I don't believe this was ever verified, just the marner fans stating it?

Who are these players and why would Marner waive his NMC?Re-sign Nylander
Trade Marner
Marner is ridiculous with his contract demands and has no threat to shoot. Instead of paying him 12M+ we can get two or three decent players to replace him.

"I don't want to go into any of that," Marner said."Like I kind of told Darren, I didn't really want them so I didn't ask for too many details about it. I'm not going to get into that."
lol Both Marner and Ferris refuse to say if the offer sheets were for more money than the contract Dubas gave them. Clearly Dubas deal was for more money than the offersheets. Gotta love how, after he signed the contract, Marner goes into damage control and continually tries to sell himself as this devoted Toronto kid who only wanted to play for the Leafs and wouldn't sign offersheets...but the contracts were for less than the Leafs offers.
Dubas should have let other team's do the negotiating for him, like Carolina did with Aho and Montreal.
Detroit wasn't a gritty team at all.Domi was a decent gamble (he got 56 f***ing points last year). He's not playing like his usual self and neither is Bertuzzi. Both these players played on other teams with grit. And it's not happened here. I dunno why that is but it's not a coincidence.
Probably a coach and leadership issue. Seems to be a bit of a culture shock when players come here. It's the same discussion every single year about how quiet the Leafs leaders are and how they display little emotion. Look at the response to the Marchand hit. It was the same conversation by Keefe we've heard for years:Domi was a decent gamble (he got 56 f***ing points last year). He's not playing like his usual self and neither is Bertuzzi. Both these players played on other teams with grit. And it's not happened here. I dunno why that is but it's not a coincidence.
But Bertuzzi was described as a gritty forward.Detroit wasn't a gritty team at all.
Here is Marners fear of contact.... Watch him completely panic and throw this puck away when he thinks someone is gonna hit him. These are the same types of plays he constantly makes in the playoffs over the past few years:
Yes. I misread your post. Bertuzzi was indeed considered a gritty player. But Bertuzzi was described as a gritty forward.
Yup.
