Should have signed him or traded him. The longer Brad waits the more likely he loses him to free agency.

Losing Willy to free agency = handing in his resignation.

The simple answer is you pay forward, not retro. They signed him early on a team he hasnt found a fit with for his 30s. I really hope Tre was forced to sign that deal because its the worst I can think of in the league
I really think it was ownership. Didn't and still do not want to rebuild. When I first saw the Tkachuk deal my first thought was wow this should have been centred around Lundell +++ rather than Huberdeau. It was then obvious what kind of path they were on which reeks of ownership. I'd think....

It was but the usual's turned it into another off topic Marner whine fest so the title was changed so people would know what to expect.
Same old folks

Wouldnt surprise me, but I'd still argue there were a lot of poor GM choices given the situation. Heres hoping it gets beyter here

100% he was.

I'm not allowed to ever use the word rebuild"

Treliving did the best with what he had as his options. Keep in mind that Calgary isn't a hot destination for players, you do need to overpay a bit.

Theyd be in a more competetive spot today had he waited, sold (even low) on Huberdeau and arguably Weegar., then reinvested that cap in the summer.

Dealt a bad hand and played it poorly.

Now Calgary is left with arguably the ugliest deal in the league

Nah, played it fine.

Blame the player for sucking or ownership for forcing his hand to stay competitive. Huberdeau would give them a 1st round pick and maybe a prospect? That doesn't keep them competitive.

They should rebuild but they won't.

There has absolutely been a justified 3.9m cap hit difference between Marner and Nylander over their 2nd contracts.

Thrrough their respective contracts to date...
Nylander has averaged out to a 73 point pace player that is pretty much all offense.
Marner has averaged out to a 101 point pace player that is elite defensively and elite on the PK.
So your just gonna ignore playoffs?

Even if they dont rebuild, you get an asset at the TDL - still miss the playoffs - sign a different player who is a better fit and miss out on that absolute anchor of a deal.

Tough to ignore the GMs role in signing a player from 30-38 who had never played a game in that system and was a questionable fit

Huberdeau gets the same contract every day as a UFA

Just like us complaining about 11M for 7 years with JT at 27-28...JT was still pulling a similar contract elsewhere.

Age curve etc be damned.

Production Huberdeau had up until that point completely justified the 10.5M 8 year deal. Maybe he takes 9.5-10M elsewhere but Calgary has to overpay for a few reasons...

1. It's Calgary and it's cold AF
2. They just traded Tkachuk for them
3. Ownership told them to basically.

And do we think its a good or a bad deal?

I also dont think he gets 10.5M coming off that year, and it certainly wouldn't have been for 8 in UFA.

JT? A bit of an overpayment, cap definitely played a factor in how it aged, covid influenced the cap a lot.

Huberdeau for the 3 years prior to landing in Calgary was #3 in points behind McDavid and Leon.

Again, there is no argument against him being worth his contract at the moment he signed it other than pretending you somehow knew he'd fall this hard. Claiming this will result in me calling bullshit.

I mean we all know players fall off in their 30s. Tavares deal runs out at 34, Huberdeau's at 38. We all knew itd get bad and there was the option to wait and see how Huberdeau fit in CGY. They had him for the year.

They didn't want to risk him walking after what just happened with Gaudreau, you know this.

I'm not sure about that. Huberdeau had a fantastic run of about 3-4 years in Florida going back to about 2018 but he always seemed like a secondary assist, floof stats padder who was never taken that seriously (and rightfully so). Even when you consider his monster, peak 2021-22 115 point season, Presidents Trophy run, he was only Top 5 for Hart ranking behind Johnny Hockey...

That said, no one could have predicted this kind of collapse, but I would have figured a 75 point a year, somewhat dissatisfying soft play in Calgary would have been a reasonable outcome.

It's almost like they shouldn't have given Gaudreau the option to walk for free, or signed Tkachuk to a bridge.
Two bad decisions leading to a third.

Huberdeau as a trade and sign or Gaudreau as a re-sign wouldn't have worked out well for Calgary in either case since neither player is worth what they make now. The mortal blow to that franchise was losing Matthew Tkachuk as he was about to hit his prime.

I bet you had this as a screen saver for a while now, just switched Nylander with Marner.

If anything the narrative is Nylander, just like the rest of the league should bow to Mitch. You can't even respond with fake justification of the $4M gap between the two, so you switched to family photos.

For real, is this your family photo or you googled this?

I'd hate to be FBI agent checking your browser history :DD

Marner has never had a 100 point season let alone averaging 101………..pace for, does not count. Actual numbers are all that counts. On pace for is just a poor excuse for the player never having achieved the claimed number.

Marner cheats on PK hence why his goal prevention on PK below average at best.

He can't stop padding his stats even if it means he gets scored on PK - more than any other Leaf. Look at Mitch - 100 point pace with elite PK! Meanwhile his PK is only elite if you care about Mitch Marner's point totals.

He gets too much credit for scoring on PK.

"Mitch points means more because he's elite on PK" .
