If the 9m player gets 9m, and is the best winger on the team, what argument does Marner actually have?
Last time he said he was as good as Matthews, and got paid as such coming off a great season.
Nylander is not the best winger on the team. He's the 2nd best winger. Contracts are also based on league-wide and historical comparables and a sample much bigger than 7 games. Marner never said he was as good as Matthews, and he never got paid like Matthews.

Last time he said he was as good as Matthews, and got paid as such coming off a great season. This time he can't say that, he doesn't have rockets or a Hart, etc.

He's not the best winger on the team anymore when it counts.
He never said he was as good as Matthews and he never got paid the same as Matthews.

Marner must lead the league in having things made up about him. This thread isn’t even about him

.... Rod Brindamour is an example of a former gym rat and he still is a gym rat. Nylander is fit. But not a gym rat.

Zdeno Chara, Jaromir Jagr biggest gym rats.

Jagr was on the insane scale, he had keys to every arena from the second he was traded there because as he explained, he always listened to his body and when he felt like doing on-ice drills at midnight he had a friend/coach on-call ready to assist him in these occasions and keys to the arena.

I bet Chara and Jagr would still kill combines.

He’s clearly our 2nd best player. You give him a blank cheque at this point.

Marner is the one you consider moving, and if it wasn’t for that stupid NMC he should’ve been gone by now for some defensive help.
Yea. While Marner may seem brilliant with all his flashy moves and playmaking abilities during regular season, Nylander is the more productive player during Spring when it actually matters. I'm willing to bet that he's the one who is more likely to score clutch game tying goals in the dying minutes of a period come playoff time.

Marner has to out think the other team because he’s not going to out skate them or hammer shots in from distance, Nylander can keep it simple and just beat guys to open space.

Except he's not.
Hes been our best player in the spring for the last three years.... my favorite moment is the game vs florida where we had nothing going the entire game, no pressure, no jam, no desire, and willy just waltz in and tucks it in short side.

Pay Him.

No he hasn't. The individual also said "more productive". Nylander has only been "more productive" than Marner in 1 of 7 playoffs, and it's even hard to argue that he was better in that playoffs when you look at the full picture and not just default exclusively to "POINTZ".
Yes, pay him appropriately. But don't pay him based on things that aren't true.

I just really hope they get a contract done while the team is in Sweden. No better way to announce it and sign it in his home country to me. He's been so f***ing good for awhile and I hope he gets his wish to stick around.

Watching him walk away for free from this team would be pretty devastating.

Every year he just gets better and better and has always shown up in the spring. You sign him and deal with the cap implications later.

Trade Marner if you have to make a choice but you don’t let Nylander go.

with how he’s producing there’s 0 chance he’s gonna move from his 10.5M$ ask.
I was all for trading him prior to recoup assets but at this point in the early season , I don’t think thats the correct move. Sure we could trade him but how dose it make our team better this year for a cup run ? who would we get back that would replace him at this current time . We could get back futures or prospects but I don’t think that improves us this current year and I’m pretty sure we are close to all in as it gets at this point. I think he will break 100 points this year or be really close to it , Honestly he’s playing his best hockey in his contract year. Nylanders showing us his full potential and thats great for us because we are trying to win a cup.

Let him play out the year offer him as much as we can afford to as a team, If he leaves he leaves.

This version of Willy is honestly better than Marner offensively. Let's see if this version can last a whole season though, a cold streak will hit eventually.

Up up and away

11+ if he keeps getting better I'm afraid

It's great that Will has really found the keys to success and is reaching his full potential. I can't imagine him having anything more, but if he does have more! It will end up costing the team some of our really good young players in the future. It's the sad reality of the Cap.

There is no doubt that this is going to force the Leafs into some tough decisions. It's either that or play with a really short bench for a year or two or maybe find some contracts they can install on Robidas Island and game the system like Arizona has been doing the last 3 or 4 years.

He was definitely better than Marner in that MTL series. Don't care what advanced stats were when Marner had no goals and four assists the entire series while Nylander had five goals. Mitch just wasn't good in that series. Couldn't create much of anything or find the back of the net.

The narrative that Nylander is a better playoff performer than Marner probably arose from that series and timely scoring in some other ones (versus CLB and FLA for example). I don't think he's an outright better playoff performer, but he's likely been better relative to salary since the CLB series.

Yes, he's simply the more mature person. That's not hating on Marner, he's an elite talent but we've seen him crack under the pressure before while I can't recall an instance of Nylander doing so.

To me, that would be the deciding factor if there's ever a discussion that one stays and the other has to go for cap reasons or just to address needs elsewhere.

MM seems to be quiet as the series get deeper while Willie seems to pick up his game as the series get longer. Also, MM tends to have one or two great games in a series and then just completely disappeared while Willie will have bad games then good games.
Willie is a better scorer in the playoffs just like he is in the regular season.
Both are great players and both need to play great in order for the Leafs to have any chances in the playoffs.

Wow.

Rielly really has been great in the playoffs. Crazy to think about his subpar start last year followed by an injury led a lot of fans to declare he was trash and the Leafs were better off without him.

Playoff Rielly is a thing.

Some guys just step up, kinda like Sam Bennett, seems to get better in the post-season, you want these guys.

For all the guys saying ditch Marner if you sign Nylander...it's not easy. So few elite defenseman become available...
