IF Nylander gets $10 mil on his next contract he would tie Jack Eichel for 12th highest AAV and Leafs will have 4 players in the TOP 12 highest paid players in the game in 2024-25.

How ridiculous is that? .. Highest paid players = Least successful playoff team.

The team with the least success in a Salary Cap World has the most top 12 highest paid players and so far its amounted to winning 5 playoff games in a single season max. Even the 2nd year expansion Seattle Kraken have won more playoff games in a season and Las Vegas the other expansion team has a Stanley Cup,

The 2024-25 is going to be the greatest Cap Hell season in the history of the NHL and will test the Leafs competitiveness like no other with 4 players consuming $45,153,000 of Leafs salary cap with a projected $87,500,000 ceiling = 51.6 % Cap hit %. Adding Rielly's $7.5 mil = 5 players & 60% CH% ..

Leafs better win it all this year because 2024-25 is going to be UGLY once the final #s for the Nylander contract come in.

Bertuzzi might make Nylander expendable in a trade. The leafs cant let Nylander hit UFA. The worst thing about moving Nylander is if he ever decides to stay engaged at his maximum, the Leafs will lose that trade. An engaged Nylander can lead the Leafs in points and easily hit 100. Look at playoff at times, Nylander was dominating and the best player on either team. He can be a complete menace on defense when he wants too, the takeaways and back pressure, how deceptive he is.

Reda: When Brad Treliving took over as general manager of the Toronto Maple Leafs, he said priority No. 1 was to extend Auston Matthews – he got that done – and then immediately said priority No. 2 was to get something done with William Nylander who's only got a year left on his deal. Any news there, Chris?

Johnston: Well not yet, where we are right now on the eve of training camp is that this is going to be something that's going to generate a lot of discussion, a lot of noise as the Leafs return to the ice but behind the scenes, there hasn't been a whole lot of talk. I don't get the sense, at least where I'm sitting, that they've made progress towards an extension for Nylander. Now I don't know that there's anything bad to be read into there – it seems like both sides are approaching this with a bit of caution. No plans at this point that I can glean for them to pick up those talks, but there is some hope with Nylander coming back to North America, being here physically, face-to-face conversations might propel things forwards.

I understand the point you are making but truthfully the Leafs have the 20th most wins over the past 7 years.

A handfull of teams have not made it at all, and they are not last even in winning percentage.

As frustrating as it has been, it could be a lot worse.

Things seem to be fairly calm and friendly and still ongoing as far as this goes

It's a lot of drama for the sake of drama. He will sign with Toronto. Half of the fan base will complain about the number, and the other half will be ecstatic. Putting all of the drama aside, I suspect that Toronto's management knows that they are a better team with Nylander than without him, and so they will give him a higher number than they probably want for the sake of getting it done. More than likely, it will be the right decision. Trading a star in his prime, where the player hasn't demanded a trade, is far too risky for a guy in Treliving's position.

Sounds simple but he hasn’t signed yet

Nylander shutting it down.

Mark Masters: William Nylander looks to limit contract talk as centre experiment begins | TSN

William Nylander addressed his contract situation following his first practice of training camp. He doesn't plan to do it again.

"I want to be here and this is where I want to play," the winger reiterated, "but I'm going to let my agent [Lewis Gross] and [general manager] Brad [Treliving] take care of that. I'm not going to answer any more questions about my contract."

How does he maintain focus as the questions about his future persist?

"I still have one more year left so that's just how I'm thinking about it," Nylander said on Thursday. "I've only known Toronto and this is the place I want to be."

Nylander has played all eight of his National Hockey League seasons with the Leafs. Before that he was with the Toronto Marlies in the American Hockey League. The 27-year-old Swede has thrived in the intense spotlight here in part because of his seemingly unshakeable self-belief.

"He is extremely confident in himself and very focused," said coach Sheldon Keefe, who has mentored Nylander since their time together in the AHL. "I would never describe Willy as distracted by anything."

Should shut down the thread then.
Salary discussion are peripheral to game play
Contract was always about the Team and Agent anyway.
Pretty sure there is another thread that discusses his play.

I was hoping for a lot better than having "20th most wins" and being "not last even".

Unless we pay him what he demands (perhaps) he's as good as gone. Anyone who believes otherwise just think about what the 1st negotiations were like...also his father & agent are now partners. His father never left a dime on the table in his tenure that I believe included at LEAST 7 teams....so draw your own conclusions...imho he's a goner to the highest bidder.

It is actually 10th most wins.

I was hoping for more as well

Since 2016/17, Toronto has the 3rd most points in the regular season.
They sit comfortably behind Boston and Tampa Bay who have 30 and 40 more points than we do over that time period.

In the playoffs, Toronto finds itself in 13th most.
Interestingly enough, a team that is lauded as having playoff success that we should aspire to (Edmonton) has exactly 1 more win than Toronto over those 7 seasons...

The problem for Toronto is that the 2 best teams in the NHL over the entirety of the Matthews-Marner-Nylander era also play in the same division as Toronto.
Not only is that a problem relating to the fact that they play these teams more frequently than the rest of the league, the NHL in its infinite f***ing wisdom, has made it so that teams must play within their division in the playoffs.....

Which means that 2 of the 3 teams in this division (the 3 best teams in the league) will always play each other in the 1st round of the playoffs and almost definitely in the 2nd round.

It's yet another form of the NHL's false parity mechanisms....

To add to this bullshit, the special teams numbers just can't be forgotten or dismissed.

Tampa Bay is the 2nd most successful team in the NHL since 16/17.
Tampa Bay also has the 2nd most power plays in that time period with 1741.
Tampa Bay has the most power play goals with 424 for a proficiency of 24.4% (2nd best in the league).

Boston is the most successful team in the NHL since 16/17.
Boston ranks 8th in most power plays with 1655.
Boston has the 3rd most power play goals with 391 for a proficiency of 23.1% (4th best in the league).

Toronto is the 3rd most successful team in the NHL since 16/17.
Toronto ranks 27th in most power plays with 1506.
Toronto ranks 7th in most power play goals with 363 for a proficiency of 24.1% (3rd best in the league).

In terms of penalty kills, the numbers are suspicious as all hell:

Tampa Bay ranks 2nd in total times short with 1720.
Tampa Bay ranks 14th in power play goals against with 326.
Tampa Bay has a penalty kill proficiency of 81.1% (6th best in the league).

Boston ranks 4th in total times short with 1693.
Boston ranks 28th in power play goals against with 271.
Boston has a penalty kill proficiency of 84% (best in the league).

Toronto ranks 26th in total times short with 1505.
Toronto ranks 26th in power play goals against with 289.
Toronto has a penalty kill proficiency of 80.8% (8th best in the league).

We've had extremely successful teams since Matthews and Marner came along, but have been put up against the only 2 teams in the league that area at the same level or better...

Very simular to the Jays issues for the past 10 years. In a loaded division and their success overshadowed by even greater success of Division rivals
