sign him then trade him for a haul. nylander being paid like a top 5-10 player in the NHL is ludicrous.
im trying hard to remain a fan of this team, but im watching less and less, its hard to feel connected to players that winning is secondary to squeezing every cent out of the franchise. these guys are just so unrelatable unfortunately.
Nobody is taking on $11.5mx8 for Willie with the millions in bonus money due every July 1st. Ship has sailed, Willie gonna be a Leaf for years.

They have to survive next year then reinvest the Tavares money into some D and/or depth.

Or they do the unthinkable and go against the grain and actually win.

They bet on themselves, the Leafs bet on them, now they need to show us they can do it.

Win a Cup and this noise can settle down for a year.

You think marner was worth 4mil more than nylander at any point in their careers?dream on man nylanders deal is the only one that looked good I wouldn’t say it was a deal but it was market value that became a steal like riellys and kadris post elc contracts marner never took a discount he got paid 700 000 k less than Matthews and 100 000k less than tavares hahahaha to what your saying right now
I will continue to say Dubas was 2 for 3 on his contracts. Nylander became a steal at 6.9. Matthews was fine too just the term waa low but thats Matthews. He operates differently. Marner is the only deal that was completely awful

I might be reaching but marner didn’t look too thrilled to talk about Willy can’t say I blame him but gotta hide it better at least
I think he knows he is a goner after Willy signs. They got a bit railroaded by this bunch and they have to stop it somehow. I think if MM lays another egg in the playoffs....he is gone in the summer. If he does really well (doubtful) I can see them giving him some of the JT money coming off the books. Either way...this team is not going to get out of this hostage situation until they start trading them and rebuild the team with players that want to be here. Dubas should have made Willy sit in 2018 and made a statement...but alas..here we are. Once the agents saw that Dubas didn't have the guts ....they went for blood with AM and MM.

id much rather take that nylander money and put it towards hanifin/pesce/reinhart kind of combo
I agree to a certain extent but I think they're going to do the 1 year get through with small cheap signings ... and then JTs cap is gone and he signs on the cheap and the cap goes way up too.

I'm not saying it's necessarily the right way to go but it's what I think they're doing.

I still think even next year they can bring in 1 or 2 d man on the cheap and convince them to go on a run next year.

I think Keefe is done if they don't go far this year though at the minimum. So very likely.

Not sure if this has been mentioned before or not but if it's true, and it is his dad that's making things difficult here, that's pukeworthy and really bad news for Leaf fans. First Marner's dad, and now this. Good thing Matthews' father isn't cut from the came cloth or we might be paying him 16 million.

Paying 11+ now seems ridiculous, I'd much rather wait until the summer. I can't imagine that the best offer on the UFA market could be much better than 10.5 with all the front loading, endorsement opportunities etc. and a chance to play with some ellite talent. Plus paying him 11+ seems to sort of assume that he continues at this level through the rest of the season and the playoffs which is far from guaranteed.

I am not betting on them so they have a shot.

Tied with McDavid for 5th in the NHL at 54 points… 9 points ahead of Matthews, 14 points ahead of Marner, and 20 points ahead of Tavares.

Yeah, he’s getting paid north of $11 million.

And we won't win a f***ing thing as a result of that shitty contract.

Agents and players look at “take home pay” and what percentage of the cap.

Cap will go up and it will be like his last deal…….initially it will look bad but by year 4 it will look like a good deal.

Leafs are very attractive for free agents due to the build so the strategy actually works until we smooth things out like you say

Things are going to work out people just like being mad

May as well hang onto Keefe and use him as the scapegoat if that is the plan. I think Shanny deserves to go first if they do not go past round 2 this year but they will keep him.

What irks me a little is that this is Toronto, why not take a lesser contract knowing that you will make millions more in endorsements. Similar yo what the leafs did with Stamkos. Player gets the money and team gets the cap savings.
The answer is simple. They want to get paid by the team AND get sponsors. Somehow our management team can't seem to leverage the sponsors to our advantage. It's kind of amazing how we are over paying all of our players relative to other teams. It's like we have a lower salary cap threshold and it's self imposed.

Yeah that could be possible too. I just think knowing Shanny that he gets rid of Keefe before the board gets rid of him but who knows.

We are really blessed with 2 prime assholes in Michael Nylander and Paul Marner.

MN was incredibly difficult as a player to negotiate with, and he didn’t have nearly the skill that William has. Add to it that Alex really isn’t going to have nearly the same kind of career, and you know Michael is focused completely on William and this contract. We should have locked him up sooner.

As for Marner, I hope now that he has a wife, it’s them making the decisions, and Paul Marner is just in the background. Having said that, I think Marner is gone.

We will find out soon enough with both how much they value being on this team.

How many other teams are realisctically going to match out 92ish million over 8 years by paying that on 7 years and having Nylander make 13 AAV?

NOBODY. Why the actual f*** are we signing this contract right now.
Here's the thing...Willy will just leave because he is not going to be the chump (along with Reilly) that takes less only for AM and MM to pick up that cash. He would probably leave even if the offer from another team was the same or lower than what we can offer if its less than MM's $11M. The Leafs know that and this is the result.

When caps core finally figure it out, their bottom 6 was barely over 10 mil combined lol.

Enjoying watching everyone panic. Must live in Leafs bubble and don't know there's plenty of fish in sea out there for us at all times. What ISNT out there for us are stars or these XBox move stacks you're making.
