The main diff is assists and most probably 2nd assists. As I find the PP is running through Willie a bit more than last year. Also others are putting the puck in the net more after Willie’s feeds or his rebounds.

I think his goals total will be over 40 but might not get as many assists as he is getting now moving forward.

Again, the defence isn't really improved either.

Clearly leafs management has decided to worry about that this summer or plan to move on from Marner if they choke in April.

How are we in a shitty predicament we have been able to retain 3 of the best players in the NHL for almost a decade and we are still a pretty competitive team.

People can say all they want we lost Kadri and Hyman and whoever else, but the reality is we had those guys plus the 3 core forwards and still didn’t win. IMO I think we’ve seen enough to know that these guys are capable of playing with structure. The problem is being motivated to do so on a consistent basis. That screams to me COACHING ISSUE. I think if we have any other coach we probably get past first round sooner

Also, 92 f***ing million is 13ish for any team other than the leafs. Why the actually f***ITY f*** would be give this to him when no team on this planet would touch a 13x7. 11.5x7 becomes 81, on an 8 year deal that’s essentially 10. No one outbids 11.5, if they do then have him.

Matthews is legit the best scoring player since entering the league. No player has scored more goals than him since coming into the league. Goal scoring is the most valuable thing in the NHL. Add on top that he plays Center which is the most premium position.

Nylander is having a career year unfortunately the pasta contract became the comparable.

Having star players isn’t cheap. But thankfully we are in a good place cap wise.

I also expect the Marner negotiation to be the easiest. He is not going to make the same mistake he made the last time. I’d expect him to take a similar raise to Matthews. Around 1-1.5 million

For the sake of argument let's say we actually did fill up Nylanders cap hit with decent players.

But then what happens when the cap goes up and all 31 other teams can now add more guys? Your balancing just got shot because the gap between non-star players isn't huge.

Only way to remain ahead of the league at all times is to keep your stars and make smart depth moves.

There's no supply of players for either case. More cap space is over rated. The league will be one big net sum of being a wash after all the additions. Majority of the moves might end up being not additions but just bigger raises.

Time for us to take drafting seriously again and find some breakout candidates who need a change of scenery.

I think AM is such a phenom that his line mates will always defer to him unless one of them is McD.

I think the Hubie deal played a bigger role. Hubie only had one great year and got 10.5mil.

Probably should have been a bit more aggressive in the offseason. Not sure he would have accepted a 10-10.25x8 deal but would have been worth trying.

In the off-season, the camp was at 10.5 to 10 million from Nylander's agent. The Leafs side was around 9.5 max iirc and was dangling around a lot because of it too, then Nylander hit a massive heater and now the rest is history.

I didn't include Minten, had a 3M 3C and was able to spend between 6-7M on a top pair defenseman

Funny. I see Nylander deferring to Matthews all the time when they play together. They make the odd great pass to each other but never hold the play like Matthews does with Marner.

I really think Willy can play on a line with 2 guys who have speed and can forecheck.
