It is way more work then you think.

The playing and getting paid is fun.

Believe me. I send kids to the pro's and college every year. It is not fun to get there.

Nylander is pretty private. Unless they are literally talking to his representation or Nylander’s immediate family, doesn’t seem like the kind of info that’s just floating out there to be had. Whitney is a blowhard anyway.

I agree there are ways to make next year work but I think we can do better than this:

Hildeby continues to grow in AHL, re-sign Jones for cheap now.

Niemela unlikely to be ready for big club next year. Sign two D. Fire Timmins into the sun

Bottom 6 there also need work, but those should be cheap roles mostly.
 
You can't compare our cap hits to other star cap hits because it's very specific how teams obtain their superstars. 99% you need to draft them. The odd time you get lucky and pajama boy chooses you when he's still in his prime.


You have to ride with the superstar you fall with. Even if you don't like it, you must accept the extremely low odds you will be able to replace them any time soon.


It's a fantasy land if you truly believe players are out there ready and waiting for us to fill up our cap space obtained by removing a star. The better and proven route is be aggressive on Coleman + Goodrow additions that cost under 4 mil combined (I actually need to refresh my memory, might even be 3 mil or under) to add to your stars. Young fresh legs for the playoff grinds and 1 or 2 token 5 mil guys like Bertuzzi. You also need to streamline ELC 's.

That's exponentially better route. NhL executives know this, so sorry, you're stuck with the 3 amigos whether you like it or not.

Did it ever occur to anyone the Leafs WANTED to sign Willie earlier. I mean I'm sure they did and tried. Or in the offseason. Or whatever?

Clearly the player was in no interest to sign anything when the Leafs wanted it and entered the season ready to play big and then talk contract.

That’s a fair point. Nylander has said on several occasions he didn’t see any rush

Yup. Never a team friendly deal to be found with this team unless the player is nearing retirement. Greed from the players is understandable to an extent. Management not having the balls to make the hard decisions is getting tiring. Should have moved Marner when they had the chance.

Liljegren will not make 4 million. It wont be higher than 2 million.

11.5 is not good and I love Nylander. The only way this makes sense if they are preparing to trade Marner or not sign him. If not, we have issues because you know Marner is going to ask for 13.5+

Love this guy. These are the types you want to have with the puck on their stick in the playoffs.

11.5 is pathetic.

Who in the world was going to give Nylander 13.14 x 7 on the open market?

This also means he was asking for more than 11.5 as he's "negotiated" down to this number. This management team has no interest in winning the cup and it's basically impossible next season after this type of deal.
