We knew it would be in this range, although a few thought that it would be under $11... anyway I think even knowing that seeing the team get taken to the cleaners on all fronts of the negotiations once again is just too predictably discouraging.

Honestly, at those numbers, I think I'd call his/their bluff and wait now until after the playoffs to try to get the number down.

Do I wish we'd have signed him at the beginning of the year for 10-10.5? Of course. Am I mad we are keeping him for 8yrs? Absolutely not. With T-Money coming off the books soon I think we'll be alright so long as we sink that money into the back end of our roster.

This is pretty much where I’m at

11.5 is too much but what's the alternative? Is Nylander walking and us having an extra 11.5 million in cap space better? Sure if you could get someone equivalent for less or better for that much. The odds of that doesn't feel high. Is it worth the gamble to walk him to June 30th and hope he blinks in the game of chicken? Perhaps.

Still should be enough room for a 8 million is D, a decent forward add next year and then when Tavares is off the books we'll see what happens with Marner and where's Tavares' money goes to upgrade.

I mean....why sign him right now if the number is 11.5? Who is beating this offer in free agency? There is literally no upside to doing this right now and not seeing how it plays out.

The master plan is backing up matthews-marner with the 2024 version of Poni-Stajan-Antropov. Need 11 mil to get it done.

He’s currently nearing the end of an offensive forwards physical prime, and hockey players don’t improve indefinitely and rarely this much at this age.

He’s only 27 years old and style of play wise I’m not concerned about how his body ages. He’s improved every year - I’m not suggesting he’ll continue to improve over this version of Nylander, but I see no indication he cannot maintain this level

The thing is that the only part of his game that has improved this year is his effort which is why this is all so risky.

Pasta signed for 11.25 mil btw. Reported number better be wrong because that's just wrong if he's making more than Pasta. Pasta been better than Marner and the same as Matthews for Points Per Game during their current deals and he's gonna be making less than them all.

Matthews 1.25
Pasta 1.25
Marner 1.24
Nylander 1.00

Nylanders would actually be under 1 if not for his unreal start to this season. Just seems wrong we always get screwed on these deals. Also Mackinnon 1.44 PPG over that same span and also makes less than Matthews new deal and Mac signed 1 month later than Matthews. This one a little easier accept because of Matthews goal scoring but everything else seems wrong.

It’s his desire. He is one of those guys that will cash in and check out. He and this core are very unlikable. The teammates will notice to. The discounts will have to come from somewhere and based on our history no one is willing to take a discount just so the “core 4” can get paid. I think it’s been mentioned over and over but discounts only work if everyone takes them. So far Matthews hasn’t, Nylander doesn’t look like he will, Marner will be the last blow next year.

I just don’t get the precedence. Id legit let him walk for free over paying that

My question is how would anyone possibly even have that kind of info.
Those guys have hundreds of contacts between current and former players etc. Just like Biz was the one that broke the Babcock cellphone fiasco because he got a text from someone close to the blue jackets as well as a former leaf who confirmed that he was doing the same crap when he was Leafs coach.

I'd argue that those guys probably have more inside info than the actual insiders.

Maybe there was someone close to the Nylander family that told Whit.

Yeah at some point management has to draw the line and wrest control back to make this about the team and not filling a few bank accounts with money they don’t even need.

Adding that 8th year should have bought us a secret handshake deal where we can Robidas him at any time and he can count his extra millions relaxing in Gothenberg.

Nylander is now going to get demolished by fans. He was loved because his number is 7 mill this year and last year. Guess what…he is now 2nd highest. His standards amongst fans just exploded.

Welcome to the mitch marner club nylander.

I really don’t think he gives a f. I would urge him to stop riding the subway if he’s not a perennial 100 point player at that cap hit though

This is false.

You can't make it in pro sports without a lifetime of sacrifice

Uh huh.. maybe by their parents but in todays game most of them are quite well to do too..

It’s not sacrifice to play a game, especially if you enjoy it. It sure beats actually working for a living.

I am sick of these contracts. Call out the players and trade them. Heck call the bluff and see what he does in summer.

Matthews is the only player who should be a bit different.
