Exact same situation for me. I want to move to Collingwood full-time but wife doesn't want to pull the kids from school in Toronto. It's probably an age thing, but at 50 years old I no longer have any use for the city. Car has been stolen twice, crime everywhere, nightmare traffic, homeless encampments on what seems like every street corner, and the prospect of a mayor that is probably quite content to double down on all those things.
I hear you. I am the same age and dealing with the same issues with kids still in school.

I should have gotten married and had kids at a younger age.

Amen to that.

Anybody else having issues on mobile where the ads cover up the quote message box when writing a post? It’s annoying af.
Try Brave browser. I have no issues on my phone.

I think the big caveat is that Marner will be 11+ most likely, so Nylander won’t want to take that much less.

Considering Nylander was willing to sit out for 2+ months on his last deal and he still got 4-5 mil less than marner and matthews, I don't think he'll be interested in giving us a discount.

Especially since he commented he would take a discount if the others did and matthews clearly did not.

It's crazy how the Aves managed to be successful and still sign their guys to good deals while our guys are not successful and demand to be paid more than their comparables.

I think he wanted to go closer to his hometown on the east coast but they couldn't work it out.
Columbus had a horrible year no doubt but I don't think they are as bad as they showed last year.

I think “Columbus” is a state of mind. You get the money you want, the exit you want but not necessarily the landing spot you want. And that’s the risk that comes with being too hard on the first 2 demands.

yeah you're right, the Blue Jackets were Gaudreau's first choice and he hated Calgary and didnt consider it home at all... 🤭😅

my understanding was that Gaudreau was 50/50 stay in Calgary or go (east, usa) right to the end of his contract... that guy loved Calgary from what I heard and read 🧡

*real reason he wanted to leave Calgary (Canada) was fear of future/furthermore insane and unlawful "covid" restrictions... same with Tkachuk and others but of course the media would not want to play that aspect up on tv

I never said they were his first choice, pretty sure that was New Jersey or Philly, the area where he's from.
Players don't need to hate a place to want to move on.

I agree but don’t see it as crazy. More so mismanagement. They paid Tavares 11. Caved to Nylanders sit out. Caved to Matthews absurd anomaly contract, and caved to Marners completely unjustified contract. Fast forward a few years and now they have all the control as UFAs and Matthews got another unjustified anomaly deal. Highest AAV ever signed in the cap era on a 4 year term. I would almost play devils advocate to most people in this thread and say this is exactly what I expected.

In an ideal world I’d say the 3rd contracts for these guys should look like this if all was done right:

Matthews: 12.75X8
Marner: 10.5X8 (yes I understand it’s less than his current deal)
Nylander: 9X8

I wouldn’t say either of these would be discounts either. Just “fair value”

Lets start working on a sign and trade with Nylander as Leafs can't give him $10 mil per.

Anaheim would make a good trade partner...

Sign and Trade : Leafs re-sign Nylander 8 years @ $10 mil = $80 mil total (on behalf of Anaheim agreed terms)

To Toronto : C/W Mason McTavish and current RFA & RH Dman Jamie Drysdale.
To Anaheim: William Nylander & Nic Robertson

Leafs bring in a pair of highend young prospects to help replenish the damage inflicted through draft picks dealt away and have some young cheaper talent to offset the high priced contracts.

McTavish gromed as Leafs #3C for now until JT contract expires and Drysdale grromed to be Morgan Rielly's future partner.

if you believe I'm ignorant, that's fine...
I think you missed the point re: the potentially paralleled situations regarding Nylander and Gaudreau with the common denominator being Gross... but somehow I'm ignorant and "attacking" the city of Columbus lmfao 😂

It's a wanting woke world isn't it?

It's all good though, you welcome to your own opinions of course, as am i... cheers

Columbus is a great city.
Unless you're a TFC fan.

Why would he want to go to Anaheim?

Same. I have friends with kids starting in first year undergrad out of town this year, so they can basically move out of the city whenever they want at this point.

Up next, Treliving hopes, is William Nylander, who is entering the final year of his contract before potentially becoming an unrestricted free agent. Treliving tried to install urgency in those talks back in June, stressing the importance of getting a quick resolution, but so far, that extension has proved elusive.

“Willy is a really important player and a really good player, and we want to get him done, too,” the Leafs GM said. “That’s next on the list.”

So where is that negotiation now?

“I’m not going to get into the play-by-play of it other than to say he’s a very good player and you always want to keep the good players,” Treliving said. “And he’s told me he wants to be in Toronto. That’s the most important thing. If there’s a desire on both sides, then you should be able to come to an agreement.”

“But these things take time. They’re all their own independent deals, and they have their own ebbs and flows.”

They haven’t hit a wall in contract talks, which is noteworthy.

“No, no, no, we’ll talk here prior to getting the season started and see where we’re at,” Treliving said. “But we still have a year.”

Two things here: First, Treliving pointing out that they still have a year to get a deal done is meant to take some pressure off the situation. There was a sense at one point that if Nylander didn’t sign this summer, he might get dealt. Now the Leafs sound like they’re willing to play this out.

Second, Treliving is clearly taking it to heart that Nylander has told him he wants to stay in Toronto.

“We’re open to trying to get a deal done, as well,” Nylander’s agent, Lewis Gross, told The Athletic on Friday.

So if I were to read between the lines here, I don’t think the trade deadline in March will be much of a factor as long as the Leafs are contenders again. They seem willing to go all the way to next summer to get Nylander’s contract done.

“It starts with the understanding that we think Willy is a top player and we want him and he’s telling me he wants to be there, so hopefully we can find a way to get it done,” Treliving said.

Sounds more and more like Nylander is gonna stay in TO.

Sucks for some people i guess

There’s actually a realistic chance if both Marner and Nylander stay long term that both of them and Matthews pass Sundin at the top of our list of all time point leaders.

Do many care about indivisual accomplishments at this point?

I want to stay in Toronto but I also want every penny

I surely hope Tre takes the “I want to stay in Toronto” comment with a huge grain of salt, I wouldn’t trust 88’s agent as far as I could throw Brian Burke………

Shouldn't be terribly surprising news here. Matthews was the obvious priority and now the team has cap certainty in knowing how much they have to play around with him signed

With Nylander both sides seem to want a deal, meaning it'll happen eventually. It's probably finalized sometime Nov-April.

Don't be fooled by rhetoric on both sides. Nylander will follow the money and the gullible will become very very quiet after the fact if the best offer is not from the Leafs.

Me too. I am the only one among my friends with kids still in elementary school.

I really enjoyed my 20s and 30s and now I'm paying the price, lol.
