Nylander played all 82 marner missed like 8 games deveining huh?

Marner missed 2 games, poster said Nylander had scored the same amount of PP goals in less ice time when in fact Nylander had more PPTOI last year just making sure the poster had the correct stats since he posted it incorrectly.

Just quoting someone who had used per game, without noticing the two missed games.

Pay Nylander this year, then play hardball with Marner next year. I can see Nylander being willing to walk towards UFA if he doesn't get the dollars, can't say I feel the same way about Marner. He's a hometown kid who seem to genuinely love being in Toronto. Point is I think Marner would be much more willing to take a hometown discount to stay in Toronto, Leafs should leverage that.

You won’t need to play hardball with someone who’s willing to take a discount

I don't get it, the guy will ride the subway, but won't go in the corners, talk about irony...........
You got it out for him huh I mean your right he’s improved on it but your right that’s not his game no more than any other player with a specific skill set

Tre can’t let 88 go to free agency, if a deal can’t be made trade him for another pending UFA that‘s more affordable and/or more likely to resign, someone like Lindholm. Realistically if Willy continues to play this well he’s going to be worth a contract the Leafs won’t be able to match If it goes to free agency……..

I think you know there is literally no chance of this happening. If he's not signed by March, they will keep him and sign him later. Up until July 1 Toronto can pay him more than any other team in aggregate contract value (and they can make the contract more valuable than anyone else by paying virtually all of it in bonus money that is lockout-protected). I really don't see the issue with this at all. Even if they pay him $11 million per season, they will have the cap space to do it, and still resign Marner.

Pay him the same as Matthews for the first 4 years, then declining for the next 4, get AAV down to $10mm.

Sure, structure it however it needs to be structured. At the end of the day, Toronto can pay him more than any other team. His agent knows that, and Leafs management knows that. I'm sure Nylander's agent will just stretch this to the point where they are happy with whatever increased offer Toronto eventually is forced to make, and then sign.

8 years take him to age 36, at 36 it is unlikely he'll get a homerun contract.

Maybe he doesn't want that length though.

If he could sign another deal at age 34, it wouldn't be a 35+ contract, which can't be bought out.
A 34 contract can be higher, as can still be bought out, so perhaps that might be their strategy?

Who knows?

Yup, no idea what they might be looking for. Generally speaking, the only reason guys leave their teams is for more money or wanting to live somewhere else (i.e., not Canada). Nylander won't get more money anywhere else, and he's never given any indication of having any problem playing in Canada. I just don't see any scenario where he leaves. Toronto is not going to let the guy walk away over $1 or even $2 million per season. They will find the cap space elsewhere (goaltending being the primary savings next season).

Tre got burned waiting on Johnny Hockey, I doubt he'll let that happen again with the same players agent too boot.........

you don't know that, and neither will Willy unless he goes to free agency, your positivity is your blind spot. Hope for the best, but plan for the worse...........

It has nothing to do with positivity. Winning teams don't trade their best players in-season because of contract concerns. It would make absolutely no sense. I also don't think Treliving will let the Gaudreau situation repeat itself, because I don't think there is any way he draws a line in the sand on salary in the way that he was likely forced to by Flames' ownership. MLSE won't do that to him. Shanahan won't do that to him. He will have the freedom to pay Nylander wants he thinks is appropriate, which I don't think was the case in Calgary. They are two very different situations.

Tre is also expected to have the team be as competitive as possible in Toronto, and it's hard to imagine a Nylander trade scenario that improves the team mid season.

Ultimately though, management has been pretty open about their desire to extend him. Tres flat out said as much in interviews now. It's likely how this all ends

if that;s true, why hasn't Willy re-upped?
