Mostly agree, although I think, this year in particular, that Nylander has been carrying that line and Tavares has been getting the inflated point totals.

But yes, Willy should be centering his own line, and probably should have been given the chance instead of signing JT.
Leafs future plan going forward IF you're prepared to pay Willy > $10 mil then he should be replacing an aging JT as Leafs #2C, and then JT having his contract sliced in 1/2 and brought back as #3 centre which would reflect exactly your point.

.ie #1C Matthews $13.25 mil & #2C Nylander $10 mil & Tavares #3C @ $5.5 mil..

PS. Willy playing for an new contract is not only carrying his line he might be carrying the entire Leafs team as its best player through the first 1/4 of this season. :)

This shouldn’t be too difficult.
To keep him on par with Tkachuk with an 86 million cap = roughly 8x 9.88 with flexible movement clauses, JIC he mails it in.

I think the final AAV will probably be something like that. It will end up being lower than most people think (i.e., it won't be $11 million like some in the media are saying).

he can’t get 11 unless the cap goes up to 95 million.

You used a word that didn't mean what you thought it meant, and omitted context that invalidated your point, and you complain that language is lost on me?
you still cant grasp it? so sad. When I said perennial I was referring to the player he is now. That is the context you missed and could not comprehend. OBVIOUSLY he didn't score 30 goals and a point per game EVERY YEAR. But you took it literal because you cant understand context.

you are completely omitting the context in which i said it.

"extending JT isnt the right move at all imo, i like him as a player but hes not a great 5v5 and hes not going to get faster or stronger going forward. the league is going younger and is faster than ever so JT just doesnt make sense to me. just my opinion though."

hes being paid like a top 10 player in the league, when in reality hes a good/very good 2nd line player currently, but he isnt fast and he does struggle 5v5(outside of the start this year where nylander is carrying) the point of this was to say in 2 years hes going to be going into his age 35 season and i dont believe he should be resigned because hes going to struggle more and more given how skilled and fast the league is now. nothing wrong with pointing out weaknesses in players when considering whether they fit the club going forward.
1. NO PLAYER above 33 is going to get faster or stronger. SO why signed Crosby, Malkin, Ovie etc ... dumb argument no 1 exposed.

2. When Tavares re-signs and signs his last contract that takes him into retirement his AAV (or cap hit) will be less than Willy's 6.9M.

My original statement was at worst Willy and Tavares flip cap hits. Willy gets 11M and Tavares gets 7M, which is a very extreme outcome as BOTH players will come in at a lower cap hit when its all said and done.

Alright, now you're just being obtuse.

"Perennial" literally means "every year". If you are talking about 'now', the word 'perennial' is wrong. Context does not enter into it - it is the wrong word for what you claim to have meant.

Second. The $3-$6 million UFA price range is an island of misfit toys. So it doesn’t give me that much comfort to walk away from a homegrown star at $10 million or whatever so I can have two or three of those guys. Just look at Klingberg, Domi and Bertuzzi.
Kling broke, but if it's the day before the playoffs start are you thinking it would be such a bad outcome to enter the tournament with a Bert, Domi, and the extra cap space to squeeze D support from the Flames instead of 11M Mitch?

You have to admit, it's a slick move :D

I have to remember that one. Use fancy words without knowing their meaning, if they call you out : "context much?"

ROFL :D
Just saw this, he interviewed with Friedman and Marek today.
Looks like we shouldn't expect a signing any time soon.

It's time for MSLE to approach Shanahan and get some clarity on william nylanders intention
Get his number give him your absolute best offer
If it's not happening get what u can
Enuff of this lm LTIR CRAP
Fish or cut Bair.
This team is Washington 2 .

It's tough not having to overpay when you're a cruddy management team that doesn't have a clue.

If anyone wants to take a hometown discount to play here there's something wrong with him. He either has loved ones in the area. Or he has a mental deficit of some sort.

Because any sane hockey player knows this isn't the place to play if you just want to win.

I’ve had more than enough of Nylander anyway. I'd rather they just trade his greedy ass. Bring in a stud defenseman.

Someone who could really help the Leafs become a contending team.

It's not unreasonable to expect management to make intelligent moves to improve this team. Too bad the Leafs only solution to every problem is to throw more money at it. Fortunately the waste of money has it's own cure.

Eventually you run out of money.

:biglaugh::biglaugh:

First you use words that you don't understand the meaning of, then you get angry when people don't understand what you're trying to say.

We have a D problem
We have a G problem
We have a coaching problem
We have an overpay/cap problem

We can resolve coaching free.

Tending is near impossible and should be a constant hunt. Incl draft and we failed.

We have the chance to stop overpaying on 3/4 stars coming up.

Fixing the D takes assets and trades for the cap. Not easy when the whole league knows you pucked up your D situation overpaying and constantly trading assets for rentals.

So there it is.

ok buddy. SO dumb when you got nothing but grammar critiques in a hockey convo. thanks for bringing nothing hockey related to this chat.

When you make a false statement (through ignorance or otherwise) and I correct you, and when you make a misleading statement and I point out context, both are completely related to hockey.

Your continuing to try to justify your mistake has nothing to do with hockey.

Nylander should sign somewhere warm.

Does Florida, Tampa, or LA have cap space for him ?

Nicer life playing down south.

What’s the price today? Holding firm at <$9M in the summer all of a sudden looks smart again.
I think that logic only works for people who can look at his three-game pointless streak and say it proves he's worth under 9, while simultaneously stating that another player's three three-game pointless streaks so far this year is irrelevant when looking at his $13+.

Or did losing an edge in his last game drop his value by $1M? That makes sense if he's the only one to ever do that.

For the record the Matthews deal is brutal.

As far as Nylander goes it’s not just a pointless streak. It’s the fact that he’s not a top 5 winger in the league and the hot streak had people trying to pay him as one.
