No way Nylander is worth more than Pastrnak.
Same holds for marner.

And if we disregard this year, Draisaitl is statistically better than Matthews.
I agree completely, the problem is that Marner is already making 11 which was and is insane. Of course there are a bunch of Pauls here who will rant about how Marner is the best winger in the league, a 1st team all-star etc. and then start throwing out all kinds of stats but ... I agree completely.

you're right but our problem is our internal cap not what league wide comparables are getting paid

Dubas broke the bank giving JT 11m which set off the chain of events with Mathews using that as his floor and then Marner using them as his comps

Mathews used his leverage as a ufa to get another overpayment for his term and now that Willie has raised his game and has leverage he's probably won't settle for for a reasonable deal based on where the comps put him

our only hope is Willie is being truthful in being a Leaf which i believe and we can use that to not get completely bent over because if he wants to test the market i can see him getting well over 10m , Chicago has plenty of cap and only Bedard to pay in the near future so i could see them throwing out a big number
agree with the JT thing, disagree on matty though. i actually think the matthews deal leans more team friendly and if he signs another 4 year deal after this one its definitely not going to be as much since he will be 31 and not 26. i would be more ok with higher numbers over a short term than a 8 year deal with any of these guys(esecially willy since hes going to be 28 by the time the new deal kicks in)

hmmm i think drai and matty are pretty close but one thing that draws my attn about drai is this...

last 5 years:
matthews: 202 goals, 146 ES and 56 pp
draistl 187 goals, 94 ES, 90 pp(jeezuz lol) 3 sh

the PP for edm has been so ridiculous that it skews the numbers a bit imo. hes actually 10th in ES goals past 5 years while matthews is 1st by a healthy margin, i still take matthews over him.

Mathews went 4 years because his goal is to score a huge deal but at max term which will take him to retirement on his next contract .

this cap hit like his last should been for max term , he's never give us a break and he never will

we dont actually have to sign him until hes 40 though, by that point one could argue we have gotten the best years out of AM and if theres still no cups here is anyone going to be crying if he signs somewhere else if its a crazy number? cuz i wont be lol.

I wouldn't dock points from Drai because their PP is so awesome, he's a big part of why it is so awesome.

I get that you are excited over his hair. But I am not looking forward into another gd playoff disappointment where the other team out works us and we ask ourselves...AGAIN...where the f*** our big money players went when it mattered the most?

I'm over it. This core is soft and overvalued based off of how well they compete in nothing games. Because Toronto is a big gd market with low expectations.
I agree the 'core' hasn't performed in the playoffs, but Willy is the one (hair notwithstanding) who hasn't faded "when it mattered most".

your right we don't have to sign him but it'll be a near impossible task to convince the fan base it's in the best interest of the club to let him walk because he'll be an anchor at the tail end of the deal

why are you making stuff up? you might have liked his game better, or thought he played better in big moments, or better given his salary etc, thats reasonable. but lets actually look at numbers:

playoffs 50 games
marner 47p
matthews 44p
nylander 40p

last season

marner 14p
matthews 11p
nylander 10p

we haven't won a cup since 67 and people still care . lol

i can knock the core for not winning a cup or for only 1 series win since they've been together but i believe we'd have had a hell of a lot more success building around Mathews/Marner/Willie and Rielly if Shanny hadn't have hired an incompetent GM when he replaced Lou so i;m not going to write off any of them before i see what the team can do once JT's 11m comes off the books

so in 5 years, after 11 years with this core if we still dont have any playoff success you will still want to pay top dollar for the stars who havent had any success? thats literally insanity lol. and btw, all of this is going off an ASSUMPTION that mathhews is going to demand an 8 year max deal with no proof of that

I know it sounds like that but really it’s undoing the Tavares deal and making the necessary moves with the cap space available and getting it done which I believe those players wil be apart of the core when is done

I didn't say 'who had the most points', I said 'hadn't faded when it mattered most'. You really have to pay more attention.

Last four seasons: regular vs playoffs:
Tavares - 0.96 vs 0.71 - drop of .25
Marner - 1.24 vs 1.00 - drop of .24
Matthews - 1.25 vs 1.03 - drop of .22
Nylander - 0.95 vs 0.97 - increase of .02.

There have also been numerous posts about individual series, and how he has been the one who doesn't stop producing in the later games.

ive always agreed about the JT thing, but at the end of the day none of willy/marner/matthews have taken the team on their shoulders like the truly great players do, one could argue mo has played better than all of them by a healthy margin in the playoffs during this past 6 years.

I’d be lying if I sat here and said you didn’t have all right to think that cause you do but I’m telling you if your watching nylander there is no way this core isn’t making noise this year id bet the house on it when we sure up the baccend nobody wants to run into us

i'd like them not to get top dollar but judging by how determined Mathews has been to maximize his earnings your damn right he's going to want a max term contact his next go around

and as i already said , i'll judge them when JT's dollar are betters spent at building a more rounded team

we can rightly bitch at the lack of playoff success but when you sit back and take the emotions out of it you'll realize it's very very hard to accumulate talents like our big 3 at roughly the same ages so i'm not just going to let them walk while there still high end players without continuing to try to build a cup team with them

You're getting nowhere, but that's because you're trying to disprove something that wasn't said. You posted data which wasn't relevant to my post, so I pointed that out, and provivded data that supported what I said.

Now you want to take your ball and go home? Why not just admit that you misread my post - it's not a big deal.

i dont think ive been emotional at all tbh, im critizing everyone equally(except rielly, hes been amazing) ive even said in this post i think willy has been the most consistent playoff guy, but im not prepared to say hes the only one whos shown up. to me matthews has been increasingly physical and performed well while taking the hardest defensive matchups. and ive made no secret that i think marner has been a dissapointment regardless of points as hes the only one thats really refused to engage in physical post season hockey. JT or no JT its on all of them individually to show some pride and more fight. and to be clear im not saying we should let anyone walk but im also not going 5 more years with 0 success before im trading 1 or 2 of these guys and trying again with other players while they are still worth a ton in trades.

i didnt misread your post, you said willy is the "only player that hasnt faded when it mattered most" i disagreed and showed you the stats to back that up. i even qualified the stats by saying its fine to think hes played better or more consistent etc.(espcially given salaries)

as for the bolded, im a grown man and im not going to get baited by somebody i dont know on the internet to continue a pointless argument that clearly isnt going anywhere. at the end of the day this conversation isnt going to change either of our minds and at this point we are just going in circles.
