Nobody is saying they do not want to win. It is just not at the very top of their mission statement. If it was, Keefe and Shanny would have been long gone and they would have moved off this core. I mean who in their right minds can go back to their boss year after year and say they want to run it back after failing again and again and again and again and again and again?
Pretty easy actually, before I came the team had 1 playoff appearance in nine years. Since I have been here we made the playoffs every year and went to the second round once. Also we have been a top 5 regular season team for the last 6 years.

I think that makes a good case for Shanny.

What Aho received what Pastrnak received what anyone else received is irrelevant, the cap number is pointless its percentage of cap that matters, wish more would grasp this.

Nyalander's 11.5 of 87.7 is 13.11%
Aho's 8.45 of of 79.5 is 10.63%
Pasternak's 11.25 of 83.5 is 13.47%

Nylander who's never scored 100 points, doesn't go into the corners and isn't the strongest on defense is NOT worth 13.11% He's closer to Aho then Pasternak.

Point still stands.

Well we are crying over spilled milk now. All we can do is move on.

Keeping the paying customers entertained and happy for 42 home games. As one previous owner told Fletch when he wanted to bring in 99. Do you see any empty seats?

As for bell and rogers, also keeping those cable subscriptions.
Winning solves all that obviously

He deserves around 9-9.5m and I thought he would get 10m in Toronto because it's Toronto, not 11+ which is insane, 2m overpay is insane.

Ur insane how do you think a conversation would go if they told him he’s worth 9 - 9.5 when you already gave marner more than that fresh out of elc and elc marner is not better than nylander I don’t even know if marner now is better than nylander that’s crazy town

This started with paying to much to Tavares and Marner. There is no way in hell Nylander takes less then Tavares, the player that makes him worse. Or less then Marners contract that Marner had for maaaany years, while Nylander not being 4 mill worse during that stretch. If Tavares and Marner had 9+mill . Nylander would never ask for 11, not a chance. The problem is if they would have let Nylander walk. Marner still want his pay closer to Matthews and if its 8 years maby 15,5 or something like that. Tavares and Marner did put us in a bad place thats hard to get out of. 9+ for Nylander and 11+ for Marner is were i would liked right now. But it is what it is . Not much we can do about it.
But i dont blame Nylander at all. If the hometown dudes and the best player on the team dont take a cut why should he. To make a statement and impact Marner and Matthews are the one who need to take paycuts. If Nylander took 9 it would have changed nothing more then he would been seen as a bargain, and have less pressure. The team mentality would still be the same.

Yes Tavares started this shit. But now we keep extending this shit.

A message could have been sent with the right call of TRADING Nylander since he was proving to be difficult. He was the only one we have that we had leverage over. Trade him for assets to help balance our team. Something...ANYTHING. After that you've sent a message to Marner. "No you will not get an open checkbook and if you truly wanna remain a Leaf and play with Matthews you need to be realistic".

But. We have no more power now to get anything from any of these assholes. Marner gets to walk out the door and we get nothing. Or we overpay him to stay and again, we win nothing.

In a no cap world I’d agree but in this circumstance we get an extra 11 million to spend on defence

Right.

I have 0 expectations of seeing a cup while this group is together. Fortunately for MLSE most people can be sold on false hope very easily. Look at lottery tickets.

Show me a legit future star 1G and a couple top 4D prospects and I will show enthusiasm about contending again.

Just going to wait for someone to say Woll is a future prime Quick or Price.

They could have let Nylander go. But not sure they could trade him, you need someone to trade with and he had only a few teams he could be traded to.

What we gain if we let Marner go is at least 11mill or 13-14 or what his next contract will be. With Nylander it would have been 7 or 11.5. Depends how you view it. And if we dont extend Tavares. We got 22mill to spend.

I belive there are cheap players out there that elevate when things get ruff, like in the playoff. A few depth players like that would be nice.

I would switch Marner for EP.

Winner winner chicken dinner………

If winning is so paramount to MLSE, why don’t they win? Asking for a friend……….

You assume that there will be defense to spend on. With an asset through trade you can be much more targeted to what you want. Letting an asset walk out the door means you are restricted to what's currently on the open market. Which is typically players looking to CASH IN.

So no. Letting Marner walk and freeing up 11M is no where near the same advantage as trading an asset like Marner.

We f***ed up. Again. And I will spend the next years taking this out on all those "Willy Styles" fan boys who thought this was a right move. Until defending the Nylander signing is a thing of the past.

Wait six years and plenty of people here will be bitching that Nylander is a anchor and it was nuts to sign him to such a lucrative contract, then again some of us know this and the outcome already……..

That may be the dumbest question ever asked on here which is really quite incredible.
Congrats, I guess.

It won't take 6 years. It will start next season when his shit salary kicks in and it's clear he's NOT a top 5 scorer in the league but paid like one.

Now we are saying "but he drives chances!" as an excuse to justify the overpay.

My advice is to hope for the best but expect the worst. This franchise hasn't figured it out for 56 years. The thing they do best is milk the loyal fanbase and string them on. Signing Willie at all costs is supposed to be a sign of their commitment to winning but most of us long suffering fans can see through it. Hell, we have a large enough sample size to know it but Shanny will keep telling us we will win with this core. Pure f***ing politician like Chelios called him.

I agree with you on the defense, but I think Woll can be a number one goalie. I understand the injury history, but his numbers certainly suggest that he can be a number one goalie, or at least good enough to backstop a winning team.

Don't blame Tavares - blame Dubas.

If we hadn't signed Nylander and let him walk then Marner holds all the cards, and gets at least $13M, or he walks and we get get nothing.

Matthews and Marner for $26.5 isn't as good as Matthews and Nylander for $25.

But yes, childish profanity aside, Dubas pretty much ensured we wouldn't get any bargains from anyone.

I’d go as far as saying they’ve successfully brainwashed many of their fan as is proof by their unyielding loyalty even when it’s apparent they couldn’t care less about success as long as the jersey’s are bought and season tickets are renewed……….
