What was the right contract?

I understand that, but if there is a GM that is willing to take that contract on…you dump him. It is by far the worst contract in the league. f*** the optics, I don’t care if you get nothing in return, just get him the hell out of here.
No one is taking him, You gotta learn to get over it. I dont see him waiving any NTC/NMC either. Even if you did find this miracle GM that your so desperate for. Willy has to still waive his NTC to go. Hes not doing it just to make 34 on HF happy. Im not a Nylander fan either, I was hoping he gets dealt for some help on the blueline, but I"ve accepted that god awful contract and moved on.

I know you are right here, but man that contract is going haunt the Leafs for close to a decade. He is a $7M player. His current contract is good.

11.5m *8 No move clause fellas! Willy Styles!

I hope his father has a suit of armor for his kid, because his home is about to despise his inflated and expensive ego. He's gonna get the Kessel treatment. I'm sure that extra 16M is going to so drastically change his lifestyle so much that it will make up for the constant pressure from media and fans alike as the team struggles to do anything from under this shit contract.

A group of Leafs fans also had fairly ridiculous opinions about Kessel too.

Ironically one of the things that likely makes Nylander better suited for a market like Toronto is that he doesn't seem to care at all about the external noise

Nylander gets in his own head after he signs a big contract. He had 1 goal and 3 points in his first twenty games back after he signed in 2018/19. Now, of course the lame excuse was "he missed camp and the first 2 months." But it is as I described it. A lame excuse. Tons and tons of players have off season surgery and miss camp and the first couple of months. There might be a slight drop in production, but not 3 points in 20 games territory. And they were bedridden recovering from surgery. Not playing hockey everyday in Switzerland.

So yeah, he'll slump the next couple of weeks. And then for the majority of his contract he'll be what he was last year and the season prior. A 30-40 goal ppg player. He won't come close to earning 11.5 Not even close. It is a gross and disgusting overpayment. But he won't just fall off a cliff either.

He deserves all the hate he is going to get. His greed has consequences. Greed can destroy a person.

Unlike Kessel we are NOT paying to offload his contract. He can stay here and wallow in the constant and daily shit storm he will deserve from the media and the fans.

No f***ing paying to have him help another team to win a cup. f*** him. he can stay here.

It's not even the worst contract on the team!

There are probably several teams that would happily take him, but he'd easily be the best player in the trade, which usually means you lose. In this case, definitely, as you're then left with just Matty to build on.

As the quarterback he was handling the puck a lot - passing and shooting, and there may have been a couple blocked.
I recall Johnson talking about how often he was shooting and he kept forcing the shortside and losing possession because the rest of the players on the ice were on the far side.

yeah he was taking some low precentage shots with zero traffic and goalie squared up and i was thinking wtf then one hit the post somehow.

Priorities shifting from winning the Cup, to making sure no one wins the Cup. ROFL

Because the idea that we're paying William nylander to score 40 goals so it's okay if he goes three games without a point is ridiculous.

he wasn't paid for that he was paid to put up points. if he's not putting up points he's not living up to the reason why we're paying him. it was never about goals.

This line of argumentation goes back to the Kessel Days. If your front line guy does his bit and scores the goals you can’t ask for more. That’s backwards. The job is to play the game 200 feet and contribute to a system that wins. The production is indivisible from that and it’s never a choice between one or the other.

he got his 11.5 because at the time of signing he was 3rd in the league. There is NO SHOT you value his 200 foot play as worth 11.5 without that fact.

Let the season play out then slam Nylander for being a bag chaser if he doesn't crack 100 and perform in the playoffs.

But man this team has all sorts of problems right now. I really thought the moves Tre made plus Knies and Robertson would at least keep us at status quo.

lol, if you ever wondered why players won’t give us a discount.
They ask what they feel we will pay. And we will pay because we are desperate for a name to sell merch.

Hyman should be a lesson as to the issue with having to let good players go as soon as their contracts come up because you gave all your money to 4 selfish pricks.

He is closer to his value of 5.5 mil then William Nylander is to 11.5

By FAR.

And he loved it here, and wanted to stay. But we are cap heavy and stupid.

The problem with that thinking is other teams are getting better and our older guys are losing time and space

I wish Hyman was still here, and he does bring great value for 5.5.

On the flip side, he played 30 playoff games for the Leafs and scored 5 goals and had 13 points and never made it out of Round 1.

He exploded when he got to Edmonton. Good for him. Not so good for the Leafs

The problem is people already think he's a playoff performer. :biglaugh:
