What was the right contract?

Don't kid yourself, if he was here at that salary most fans would be crucifying him because he wouldn't be on pace for 53 goals.
Only the fans that think scoring goals is the only aspect of the game of hockey that counts, so yeah only most of the posters in this forum………

He (Hyman) had a freakish career development path so far. Which in part is driven by his current linemates (though he obviously he's also playing great).

If he had played that way in Toronto, there wouldn't have been any doubt over if they should have kept him
Age 24:

82 games, 10 goals, 28 points.

Holmberg

16 games, 2 goals 7 points.
Projected 82 games:
10 goals, 39 points

And one Crosby.

Sure, but that doesn't mean that a four game pointless streak is a guarantee he will never score again, which seems to be what some posters are arguing.
Those posters are indeed going overboard

But Nylander is now officially in the superstar tier of players pay wise

Marner/Matthews dont get on the board 3-4.games in a row and they get shit on throughout

Tavares... is another story unfortnately

Nylander this year will for sure out play his deal again. If he chokes hard and only ends with 85 pts thats still a 1M+ overpay of his deal

Next year though at 11.5M, the expecations can't be understated

He has to be a hart level/fringe hart contending player. A top 5 winger at worst

He needs to be panarin (with hopefully better playoffs) to live up to his deal. Being a ppg guy would make him the next tavares

Hoping the past 4 games are just ups and downs of the season and willy still ends with 100+ this year. Need that type of production from him as JT waste 6M capspace next year

Problem is thinking the opinions found in the shallow end are the consensus. Not even close.
It was a fair gauge just ast the takes around here are a fair gauge, JT sucks, Marner sucks, Mathews is selfish and will not win anything, Nylander has the worst contract in the league.

all criticisms I am reading now, just as the complaints were that I’ve read in the past.

mind you I don’t share those opinions but I am in the minority for sure.

I don't think the average fan cares remotely anywhere near as much about contract numbers as some people here do

Once again led the team in shots (and posts) and setups to JT.

Willy and JT had 11 of the 20 shots by forwards.

Some people should watch the game and not just the scoresheet.
We can't drag Matthews and Marner for winning the xgf% battle in the playoffs while putting up 0s and then turn around around and praise Willy for putting up the most shots while spitting 0's as well. Well, maybe we can now but it's not going to fly next year. The timing sucks for Willy because he's been great just about all season and ofcourse when he signs his mega contract he goes cold. Saying that, the same way Marner and Matthews will catch flack for not scoring during a losing streak, Nylander will now too. It's comes with the territory, you don't get paid $11M for just effort.

I agree, but my post was in response to someone saying he was lazy and invisible.

Unsuccessful, yes, but not invisible unless you only look at who got points.

Honestly tavares needs a break rest him and play Willy in the middle
I said it last year when they were locked into 2or 3rd that JT, Brodie, and Gio should not have been on a plane after the all star break until the playoffs started.

I don’t think it really matters this season.

Willy has sucked recently .. we really needed him against those fast teams and he mailed it in .. sorry folks i am a huge supporter but da truth needs to be clear .. while playing with JT is killing him i know he did not step up and dominate .. JT needs to move to 3rd line LWer asap

88 ought to be able to drive his own line or what’s the point of paying him like someone who should be able to do that? Style’s got paid, time to revert to the Nylander we all know……….

It does appear there needs to be a change to the Leafs 2nd. line.
Tavares is giving everything, but doesn't seem to be able to get open, or move with the puck like he has.
Said in the PGDT that perhaps he's playing too many minutes for the wear and tear on his body?

Not sure what options are available though?

Their late 20's players can handle those minutes, maybe 33 year old Tavares can't?

It may just take some creative line juggling?
