I think Islanders need depth scoring personally not more defensive specialists.

As I said forward speed is a sore spot on the team. Both Nelson and Palmieri seem an increase in output with him on the line(mainly due to him rushing the defense). I am in no way saying he is the greatest forward around when it comes to that skill but when your team lacks something, anybody who can give it to you has much higher value(then say a team full of highly skilled fast guys who can rush the defense)

Now in no way is this a defense of 7 years. In that time injuries could slow him down or you find other players who can provide that skill who are better/cheaper/etc and he become redundant.

It was just a case last season and hopefully many season to come it was a case of fitting a square peg into a square hole

Well, Engvall has never scored 20 in a season and I'm dubious having him around all these years is a good thing. Time will tell obviously but I think Engvall will never again be compared to Mike Gartner after tonight

Let's say he goes between 30 and 40 points. That puts him between numbers 200 to 300 league wide

That production on a mediocre team with a mediocre coach just doesn't excite me for the next several years
He could surpass 20 too, skating is something that helps him for this lineup and he might well get a lot of ice time if Palmieri gets hurt again. LW is a lot more settled than RW for us.

Lou didn’t draft him but ihe was 188th overall in 2014 and Lou saw multiple years of his development. Let’s see if that insight is solid on this. We’ll know halfway through the season. It’s a unique combo of skill and size/skating. If he puts it together you’re developing a Bob Bourne style player, just not quite as fast.

Lou will be dead when the contract ends.
Honestly I see him lasting close to a hundred years of age. My grandpa is from the same cloth, he's 93 and still doing charity work and driving his car, cracking jokes everytime I talk to him. Some people just age gracefully and keep their physical and mental form for what seems forever.

Check out Athletes Unlimited Lacrosse on ESPNU too
Great Women’s pro without the stupid shooting space rule
The Rabil documentary was an interesting insight that I give credit to Paul for showing the warts too.

Dubas haters missing Lou and his 7 year deals. Luckily Dubas was able to get out of the Zaitsev 7 year contract that was a disaster.

The main flaw with Engvall is he is prone to floating for long stretches of time. That is what scares me of giving so much term. Engvall is 27. This is the last contract he likely signs in the NHL. He has made it. The middle of that contract is going to be ugly potentially when the Islanders are in a rebuild they are obviously heading for and he has nothing to play for.

The isles have locked up Pelech, Pulock, Barzal, Horvat, Sorokin longterm. There is no rebuild in sight.

I dont mind the Engvall contract. I do HATE tge Mayfield contract.

Pierre ain't betting on himself

But at that cap hit and length - you likely won't hate that contract, especially if / when the cap goes up. 3M will be cheap cheap for a contributing bottom 6er.

His production is average, yes, but teams need to fill out a lineup and cap space is limited. He was signed to an AAV that is below average for the current cap, so I don't see the problem? What exciting players do you think are willing to sign for below average salaries?

If the Isles are in a rebuild then it won't matter if a 3m forward isn't playing well. Having players play poorly helps get higher picks and 3m won't be a hindrance if they are already dumping players.

I wasn't speculating on exciting players, just noting that the contract and Engvall doesn't excite me

I love these kind of contracts, agent calls the player and says "yeah so they offered you 3m per year" and the player is like "yeah thats reasonable, did you get any other offers?" Until they find out its for 7years lol
