and that is why I am focusing on him. His next contract will be about 6mill a year vs Bouchard 11
Focusing on someone, and trading a better player for him are two different things though.
You can also find a really good forward who will make a whole lot less than Draisaitl next year, yet you would be nuts to trade Draisaitl for lesser pieces.
You don't trade elite players for lesser players, because afterwards you'd be looking to find an elite player again. And yes, Bouchard is very much elite, even when taking his occasional brainfarts into account. All his stats back it up, and his playoff-performances speak for themselves. Even if one were to to follow the nonsensical argument that Bouchard is only a product of McDavid and Draisaitl, performance is performance. If it were so simple to get points with them, everyone would do it, yet they don't. If someone is a good fit, he's a good fit.
Romanov is a very good defenseman. Trading an even better one for him makes no sense at all. Especially when said deal would remove the only good RD and add yet another LD where none is needed. At best he is a lesser version of Ekholm. Which would be a fine target for the future if you consider that Ekholm doesn't have many years left, but not at the cost of the only good RD and main offensive defenseman.
That doesn't even even cover that it is completely unclear what Bouchard would sign for. An initial ask isn't the same as a contract agreed upon. Not to mention the cap going through the roof over the next few years.
It also doesn't take the interests of the Islanders into account, who are in a completely different situation than the Oilers are.
