I'm still thinking, ok, just pick guys you LOVE. Like, I think we can tell they LOVE Molendyk, right? I don't know exactly why... sure, he's a nice prospect, great skater, we all like him just fine. Great pick. Etc. But he's getting all the extra looks and call outs. It's pretty clear nobody is going to sit him or make him play 3 years in Milwaukee after he gets out of junior, right?
I can see them loving L'Heureux, Surin similarly. Maybe there's a pattern of sorts maybe not. Whatever. But... to me then... don't go picking a Tomasino, Tolvanen, Fabbro if you don't LOVE them. How did they get onto your draft list that high if you didn't LOVE them and weren't subsequently going to give them the same kind of attention a Molendyk is currently getting? If you have any doubts or they don't inspire you that way, put them lower on your list, reach for somebody who is otherwise ranked a little lower? End of the day, if we get a slightly less skilled guy or whatever, who cares, at least we get a player you are truly invested in? We're not going to have ANYTHING to show for any of Tomasino, Tolvanen, or Fabbro. They're all NHLers... but won't be for us.
"Difference makers" like whether we draft a Bedard or Celebrini, that's a different level entirely. We probably won't ever have that to look forward to. We have an issue atm just with the players we actually do have the chance to draft.
I guess for UFA signings like Stamkos it's fine, they love him, just... again, apply some intelligence/constraint. He's a certain kind of player who fits a certain role, but you don't have to be blind to reality. The Preds seem to have a problem in terms of balancing their player evaluations vs. actual NHL deployments/utilization. The organization simply needs to Be Smarter. Across the board. It touches the prospect handling AND the big name UFAs like Stamkos.
