Avs and the Leafs for the most part have a smart management group.

Both teams clearly had cap space to retain a 5m 30+ goalie but bet against these goalies. Both teams went with
5.5-6.5m tandems.

CJ just said on his podcast that Ottawa had another offer for Murray to retain 25% so Leafs were never going to get 50% retention.

Maybe Dubas knew what he was doing here?
I don’t think he knew what he was doing I think when Ottawa played hardball he folded like usual

Honestly? No.

I'm okay with either option as a backup.

I guess we have to just hope 1 gets hot at the right time

Happy? No. The uncertainly of it scares the crap out of me and what it may mean for the team next year.

Do I believe it has potential to turn out decently? Yes. These guys aren't over-the-hill...they're former high potential goalies who have lost their way. If they can re-discover some of it...

All that being said, I have higher hopes for Samsonov and liked that transaction way better than Murray.

Definitely. I hit rock bottom when my father died 2 years ago. I'm just starting my way back. And im 58. Losing someone so close like that can have a tremendous effect on an individual.
Sorry to hear that bro. Glad you're on the way up 🙏🏼

Good thing one of them has gotten hot at the right time. He's got two rings to show for it 😉

A reminder for those panicking that with just the backups in net posting a combined .890sv%, the Leafs won at a 107pt pace.
That was last season. With the upgrades Ottawa, Buffalo and Detroit did I don't they will have anywhere near the same amount of points.

I would argue that all off the other Atlantic playoff teams got worse which should balance that out.

Boston and Florida are definitely worse and shouldn't touch their point totals from last year. I'm not sure about Tampas point totals decreasing, but they are a worse team on paper (no Palat and Cirelli out to start the season).

You'll also likely see one of the lower standing teams go hard tank for Bedard part way through the year (Montreal and Detroit?)

I won't be happy until the season comes n is over and I have seen how they perform.

I will say I am happy that there was good logic behind the moves and it wasn't a stab in the dark.

So I will say I am optimistic about our goaltending. I was not big on samsonov but once I heard what's going on with him, I am now alright with acquiring him

MARNER ON BOARD

Mitch Marner is getting behind the Leafs’ new pair of goaltenders.

The Leafs acquired Matt Murray from the Senators and signed Ilya Samsonov in free agency once they were not going to be able to re-sign Jack Campbell.

“Two-time Stanley Cup winner, he knows what it takes to get there,” Marner said to TSN, regarding Murray, at his charity event on Thursday night. “He has done a lot of great things. I think he is ready to really attack this year and become what he is and we are excited for that."

“He is going to do great back there. We have to make sure we play strong in front of him and give him all the help we can.”

Marner was positive about Samsonov, who was not qualified by the Washington Capitals.

“He is very quick in his net, can make a lot of big saves for you, so we are excited about that one as well,” Marner said. “With the goalie tandem we have, we are happy with it.”

Marner said he was “sad” to see Campbell depart and join Edmonton on a five-year contract with an AAV of $25-million, but was “proud” of his former teammate.

“He has been through a lot in his hockey career, and for what he has achieved, he deserved this deal,” Marner said. “He’s going to do great in Edmonton.”

I would have been way more comfortable with Campbell over either of the two we currently signed. And for goaltending, it only matters really who your one best goalie is for the most part.

But sure, let's trust the management team that has failed to put us over the hump and has treated our team deficiencies with zero urgency or planning.

I’m a little concerned after that video. I mean I’m 40 and he looks like he could be my dad.

What happened to Murray? He looks terrible. Like meth terrible

Considering the contracts handed out snd assets given away for serious question marks in Husso & georgiev im okay with the Murray Samsonov combo. Would I have liked Murray to either have come with a 2nd+ at 25% or be retained down further? Yeah, of course.
I also wish for a lot of things. All considering I understand why they went down the path they did and would much rather roll the dice on these two than hitch my wagon entirely to soup or one eye Darcy.
If Samsonov can shoulder enough of the load so they can get into the post season with a healthy and focused Murray then I think that’s better than what they have had in net in recent failures.

I don’t think he knew what he was doing I think when Ottawa played hardball he folded like usual
No, of course. He has no clue, obviously you should teach a MasterClass on the subject.

Curious on the decision making for choosing the two we did. It seems pedigree weighed heavily, cups and first round picks.

Murray actually rates fairly well with many of the advanced goalie metrics in recent years, more impacted by health. Samsonov has pretty horrible metrics across the board the past couple years. So not a lot of common ground.

Goalies are a total crap shoot so I hope at least one pans out but the curious choices tend to mirror or long track record of being unsuccessful in finding a long term solution.

The one thing that I have not heard discussed is the Murray injuries. In 96 the Leafs traded for a hot junior player named Alyn MacAuley. After the deal, they found out through the media that Alyn had had 4 concussions in junior hockey.

Now they trade for another Ottawa player and guess what in 2018 he had 2 concussions in 8 months in March
he suffered his 3rd and was off with Post-concussion syndrome.

The next hit to the head be it a slapshot or a body check will be the last also the body does not respond as well as you keep getting hit.

Personally, I think the only thing Toronto got was a ticking time bomb.

I could be wrong but the fact that he is ow prone has to weigh on his mind.
