8. Toronto Maple Leafs

In: Matt Murray and Ilya Samsonov

Out: Jack Campbell and Petr Mrazek

For the second straight offseason, Toronto has downgraded in net.

There’s potential in the goaltending duo of Murray and Samsonov, but this feels like a massive disappointment for the Maple Leafs. Murray has a .899 save percentage and minus-22.4 goals saved above average over the last three seasons in Pittsburgh and Ottawa. Perhaps playing behind a better defense will rejuvenate his career. Toronto ranked inside the top 10 in both high-danger chances and expected goals allowed last season. But even with 25 percent of his cap hit retained by Ottawa, Murray is an expensive risk.

Having said that, signing Samsonov certainly helps Toronto’s case. It wasn’t a great year in Washington for the 25-year-old netminder, but he’s still young and has shown the potential to play well at this level. If nothing else, it gives the Maple Leafs two shots at finding a capable starting goalie. They just put up a 115-point season with a .899 team save percentage, so it’s not as if they’re asking either goalie to carry them.

I don't know how you can argue we've downgraded in net when Campbell was legitimately the worst starting goalie in the NHL in the regular season

Kevin Woodley was on the Fan590 morning show yesterday and he did a really in-depth scouting report on Murray and Samsonov.

On Murray, he said that the style that won him 2 cups no longer works in the modern NHL. He went in-depth on this but basically his style leaves him vulnerable to east-west passes. Murray has recognized this and began to make changes to his style, but has been slowed by injuries and the fact that Sens replaced their goalie coach midway last season. Woodley said that with a good goalie coach (and he praised Sanford) he can see Murray getting back to being a good starter (if injuries allow).

He was more negative on Samsonov though. Said that his style also sucks - his upper body tends to sag and his butterfly is too narrow - and when he has to extend his pad to make the save, his pad doesn't stay flush to the ice so a flat puck can get under. He's not sure if this is a technique issue or physiological constraint. He said that Samsonov does not listen to his goalie coaches at all. Maybe being non-tendered by Washington humbles him a little and he listens to Sanford, but it's anyone's guess.

There goes my anxiety through the roof.

We'll see how it goes.

If healthy probably the best combination they've had for a while.

Campbell was an unproven starter, and played well at times, excellent at times and subpar at times.

He's on his way to becoming a starter, having played 49 games, 18 more than he had ever played.
Would have been okay with him, but 5 years for 1 year of history of being a starter.
I think there is more to the story, but we'll never know.

Murray is 2 years younger, has 3 years of being a starter, but is a question mark right now.
Was a key piece in the Penguins last 2 Cups.

Contract term is very managable.

Leafs need Murray to find his game and forget about his time with Ottawa.

Of the goalies that were available, I'd take him over Campbell and Kuemper.

Georgiev would have been interesting.

Georges numbers weren't all that good. I imagine he is better than Samsonov but not by that much. Healthy Murray could be as good or better than Jack and the term makes it a win. Injured Murray is a disaster unless Samsonov reinvents his game. As long as upper body, head and undisclosed aren't concussions there is hope:)

Campbell put up a better season than either part of our new goalie tandem. That said, each season is of its own merit and what happened last season isn't necessarily an indicator of what is to come for this season.

The only way either of these guys has a decent or breakout year is if our D group actually plays solid defense and doesn't leave them out to dry

Given that the team D last year measured top 10 league wide in many of the metrics used to determine whether a team is good defensively, I'd say they (Murray and Samsanov) are both in a better position to succeed than they were last year.

Honestly how many teams would you say are 100% happy with their teams goaltending??

Anaheim - love Gibson but he has had a few down seasons but I think will bounce back but still question marks
Arizona - just a mess
Boston - Swayman/Ullmark are pretty solid but a downgrade since Rask
Buffalo - get real
Calgary - Markson Vezina type regular season but iffy playoffs
Colorado - I am more confident with Murray/Samsonov than Francouz/Georgiev
Colombus - Elvis is solid
Carolina - Freddy/Raanta I think are just as big a gamble as our duo. Freddy has to show something in the playoffs
Chicago - yikes
Dallas - Oettinger looks legit
Detroit - Husso/Ned have potential but still a gamble
Edmonton - Soupy is an upgrade but not a guy I think to take you to the next level
Florida’s - Bob/Knight pretty solid but Bob disappointed in the post season after a bounce back regular season
Los Angeles - Quicks best years are behind him and Petersen doesn’t look ready to be the number 1
Montreal - is Price going to play this season??
Minnesota - Fleury wasn’t the teams starter in the teams must win playoff game and Talbot is gone
Rangers - stud
Islanders - stud + above average starter
Devils - not a better duo than what we are rolling the dice on
Ottawa - Talbot will give you average/above average goaltending
Pittsburgh - Jarry coming off pretty good year
Philadelphia - Hart wasn’t much better than Samsonov last season
San Jose - Hill/Reimer/Kaapo …Hill has potential but is a year older than Samsonov and Kaapo is the same age
Seattle - Gru is coming off his worst NHL year but that is a horrible team in front of him
St. Louis - Binnington seems to elevate his game in the playoffs
Tampa Bay - doesn’t get any better than Vas
Washington - Kuemper coming off a cup win is probably top ten
Winnipeg - Helle is a stud but coming off a bad season by his standards
Vancouver - stud
Vegas - Lehner always seems to give a team solid goaltending but is already on his 5th team

Columbus
Dallas
Rangers
Islanders
St. Louis
Tampa Bay
Vancouver
Washington
Winnipeg

28% of teams are 100% confident in their goaltending going into the season??

I think Buffalo has great goalies coming up in Levi and Portillo. I think Comrie is going to end up the best goalie out of who was available this off season.
