Offseason goalie carousel: Ranking and analyzing the 9 teams that have made moves
Who made moves to improve in goal and who might have taken a step backward?
8. Toronto Maple Leafs
In: Matt Murray and Ilya Samsonov
Out: Jack Campbell and Petr Mrazek
For the second straight offseason, Toronto has downgraded in net.
There’s potential in the goaltending duo of Murray and Samsonov, but this feels like a massive disappointment for the Maple Leafs. Murray has a .899 save percentage and minus-22.4 goals saved above average over the last three seasons in Pittsburgh and Ottawa. Perhaps playing behind a better defense will rejuvenate his career. Toronto ranked inside the top 10 in both high-danger chances and expected goals allowed last season. But even with 25 percent of his cap hit retained by Ottawa, Murray is an expensive risk.
Having said that, signing Samsonov certainly helps Toronto’s case. It wasn’t a great year in Washington for the 25-year-old netminder, but he’s still young and has shown the potential to play well at this level. If nothing else, it gives the Maple Leafs two shots at finding a capable starting goalie. They just put up a 115-point season with a .899 team save percentage, so it’s not as if they’re asking either goalie to carry them.
