OT: Non-Kraken Local Sports (Mariners, Seahawks, Sounders, etc.)

I too will never understand Vancouverites supporting the Jays. I think it’s because they’re so bombarded with all things Toronto by Sportsnet and TSN, the two national networks. It’s drilled into us all that it’s somehow unpatriotic not to cheer for the Blue Jays. It reaches nauseating levels, frankly.

In fairness, though, the M’s have never really marketed the team in BC after Edgar blew out a knee in a glorified spring training game in Vancouver in the mid Nineties.
Since then it’s been crickets. You can pick up the Mariners on TV in Vancouver, but not the rest of the province.
The A level baseball team because part of the Jay's affiliates. So, there is a connection between the 2 clubs.

They've put in a MOU for Memorial stadium to be torn down and rebuilt. I hope so, it's a dump.

They want to put a new 20,000 stadium in and compete for smaller outdoor concerts etc. Hopefully they move the XFL there, the Lumen field turf is awful right now due to so many people playing on it.

I feel like they'd do well upping the capacity by 5-10k and putting the Sounders there. XFL won't last long enough for the stadium to be built. They could also try running the Seawolves out of there. I figure they'd do better attendance wise than Tukwila in a new stadium in the center of the city.

Seawolves for sure, arguably OL reign? It would need to be 40,000 for the Sounders though otherwise the team are shooting themselves in the foot and limiting themselves. Soccer is only going to get bigger.

It will be interesting to see what happens with lumen after the 2026 world cup. It will be almost 25 years old by then and probably due a revamp, especially if the hawks get new owners

I see the Seattle Thunderbirds are having an outstanding season. What's their odds of winning the Memorial cup like? Do they have any prospects that the Kraken could realistically draft?

I don't see much of a prospect there.

They're this good because they have a couple of prospects that already got drafted like Dylan Gunther, Reid Schaefer, Brad Lambert, Kevin Korchinski etc.

How do they stack up compared to the OHL teams? I know i'm getting ahead of myself until the WHL play offs are done

Seattle's been a the top of the CHL rankings all season; usually in one of the top 2 spots.
2022-23 Kia CHL Top 10 Rankings: Week 24 - CHL

"The Seattle Thunderbirds extended its own streak to 17-0-1 after a home-and-home sweep against Portland. Dylan Guenther (ARI) led the charge Friday with three points (1G, 2A) in a 5-2 win while a day later, Kyle Crnkovic scored twice in a 4-2 victory. Seattle’s 52 wins and 107 points are the second most in the CHL."

What area are you staying and how long are you there?

I recommend seeing the MoPop museum MoPOP | Museum of Pop Culture in Seattle Washington and Chihuly museum near the space needle (don't bother with the actual space needle unless you want to say you've been up it). I'm not sure if you are driving but the Museum of Flight is amazing. You can go inside all sorts of planes, fighter jets, Concorde, JFK's air force one, the first ever 747 etc. Literally hundreds of planes and helicopters there. Home | The Museum of Flight Downtown there is also an underground tour where you can see the old city before it burned down: UNDERGROUND TOUR

I can recommend more if you are staying longer.

It's probably the most touristy thing you can do but Pike Market is worth visiting and has lots of good food places there, especially the chowder. I wouldn't bother with the original Starbucks (it's not even the real original).

There's a great Cuban sandwich shop/chain called Unbien/Paseo if you get the chance but it's not near the stadiums. Seattle also has great Teriyaki places, you can't go too wrong with most. T-Mobile Park is right beside Chinatown where there is lots of great Asian restaurants. My personal favorite for a quick snack is Korean hot dogs Chungchun Rice Hot Dog | Online Ordering

There's plenty of bars and breweries near the stadium as well. T-Mobile Park is easy to get to via public transport, it's right off the stop or you could probably walk from downtown (just avoid 3rd ave which is a bit sketchy near the courthouse).

For a stadium, T-Mobile Park itself has pretty damn good food choices and good quality unlike Centurylink and Climate Pledge which are more what you would expect at a stadium (meh).

Well, if you haven't been to Seattle, Pike Place Market is great and probably the only true universal "must see".
If you like breakfast, my favorite place to eat in Seattle is Honest Biscuits which is near Pike Place Market, but there are a ridiculous amount of other places to eat there. It's a good food city. One of the best really, so you can't often go wrong if it gets good reviews.

If you're into Northwest music and sci fi, fantasy and horror movies, the Museum of Pop Culture is freaking awesome and would be a "must see" for you if you like those things. The Sci-Fi and Horror movie prop rooms are amazing as are the Nirvana and Pearl Jam rooms. I mean some REALLY cool stuff. Loads of pop culture history, plus some really unique and cool interactive music things. If you are parked at Pike Place, it's like a 10 block walk and like $5 to get to the monorail to get to MOPOPS (which is also near Climate Pledge Arena). of course, MOPOPS costs a decent amount, but I feel in this case, it's actually worth the pricetag.

Space Needle is fun once if you haven't been, but it's WAY overpriced. Cool view, but it's not hard to find a view elsewhere in Seattle. It's also in the same area as MOPOPS and Climate Pledge. If you like art there is a really neat glass art gallery here as well, I'd imagine among the best in the world. It's not cheap, but if art is your thing, this definitely stacks up. It's called Chihuly Gardens I think.

I also like to take the ferry to Bainbridge Island, peruse the shops. It's cheap going out, free coming back. Great views if it's nice and some unique shopping if you like that sort of thing. I only like it so much for the views and the boat ride. My wife likes the shops. If you like shopping or are travelling with somebody who is, the waterfront is great too and easily walkable from Pike Place Market. The Aquarium is an aquarium... if excels in some areas and disappoints in others. The Woodland Park Zoo is nice for a zoo. I like it, but definitely not must see if you've been to any zoo ever, although that might be the one in the area with the Camel ride, which rules... but it might be the one in Tacoma. I forget.

I'm not a resident of Seattle, nor have I ever been (short of a few weeks when I was homeless and lived in my car right after high school, before college... so not really homeless, but I'd moved out... and just went to concerts all summer... not a bummer, but I reeked), but I go to Seattle frequently for fun. Lots more to do there as well, and a LOT to do around there, but not so much this time of year as the weather...you know.

Oh, and for the single most unique ballpark food experience in the US (I'm SURE it is... right?) go to Edgar's in left field and go downstairs to the level below and get a cup of grasshoppers. YES! GRASSHOPPERS, THE BUG! and chow down. If you think this is an awesome idea and can't find it, just go to Edgar's and ask where you can get the grasshoppers, they will help you.

Opening day tomorrow. Hopefully another year of this:

I think if pitching stays healthy they should be a wild card team again. If Kelenic can hit like he is in spring ball then that's a potential x factor in the division. Biggest concern seems to be Shortstop.

Worst case, the All Star game is in Seattle for the first time since 2001.

Well... I sure hope they make the playoffs again, because that was fun.

Losing to Houston in the ALCS in 4 games would be an improvement to last year :)
It would. Just a lot of variables and what ifs. Can Kelenic finally hit, can Suarez and France not be one year wonders, injuries, adjustment to pitch clock and no shifting.

On the plus side we don't play Houston as much this year due to the new schedule rules.

I do think if they are in contention near the TDL they'll make another splash or two again depending on the need for hitting, I think they saw it work well with the Castillo trade and Santana was a great rental who was pretty clutch.

It was Super Bowl XL that made Leavy the subject of scrutiny and derision, among Seattle fans. In 2010, he admitted that it wasn’t an ideal performance.

“It was a tough thing for me,” Levy said at the time. “I kicked two calls in the fourth quarter and I impacted the game and as an official you never want to do that. It left me with a lot of sleepless nights and I think about it constantly. I’ll go to my grave wishing that I’d been better. . . .

“I know that I did my best at that time, but it wasn’t good enough. When we make mistakes, you got to step up and own them. It’s something that all officials have to deal with, but unfortunately when you have to deal with it in the Super Bowl, it’s difficult.”

Still a clown and screwed Seattle out of a super bowl. Still not convinced it wasn't rigged looking back at the replays.

Sad to see that SB40 stayed with Levy - you never want to see that.

With that said, I've never blamed the officiating in any single professional sports event - I figure that you need to play well enough to overcome that stuff.

I've made one exception to that rule, and it's for SB40.
