Ayup.
Today is the Mariners baseball we all know.
Just a matter of time for the Sonics to return. But, it's going to cost a lot in expansion fees based on the last 2 sales transactions.
Bucks did a partial sale of the team for a valuation of $3.5 Billion
Suns valuation came in at $4 Billion when Sarver sold the team.
Seattle should land in between those 2 given their market size.
Price has doubled for the top 10 markets given the sale of the Clippers and Rockets a few years ago compared to Phoenix.
That was always the important thing with the Kraken ownership, was Bonderman able to finance an NBA team. In 2018 when they got the Kraken, NBA top price paid was around $2.2 billion. Now, it's like doubled that.![]()
Kraken Rise — NBA Return?
The task is formidable. Then again, what about this project has been otherwise?www.postalley.org
Posted in another thread but it wouldn't shock me if Kraken ownership couldn't afford it and the NBA did build another arena at SODO, especially since they compete for dates and take away concert revenue. The city were against it before mainly as they didn't want to be stuck with Key arena but that's been renovated now (I think the port thing was a weak excuse). Vegas is building a second arena.
It all depends what billionaires are interested. It was Ballmer previously before he bought the clippers. Seattle isn't short of billionaires. I doubt it's Bezos though (I think there's a high chance he buys the seahawks in the next 2 years).

So short sighted of Schultz selling the Sonics for $350 million. Especially right before the Amazon/South Lake union boom at the time. A Seattle franchise would be worth a lot more than an Oklahoma and I imagine eventually the city eventually would have upgraded the arena. That was always the important thing with the Kraken ownership, was Bonderman able to finance an NBA team. I can't see another arena getting passed in Sodo. Seems like there was so much opposition against it.
We say that up north about the grizzlies. Honestly they’d be on the low end for the nba but around the high $2 bill to $3 bill range. But different times. So short sighted of Schultz selling the Sonics for $350 million. Especially right before the Amazon/South Lake union boom at the time. There was no way politically it was getting paid for so close to the 1995 renovation and the fact T-Mobile Park and Centurylink were just built. We say that up north about the grizzlies. Honestly they’d be on the low end for the nba but around the high $2 bill to $3 bill range. But different times.
Sonics screwed themselves over in the end when they screwed the nhl expansion bid in the early 90’s and accepted a reno to the arena vs a tear down and rebuild which would have put the arena at the level of Rogers arena in Van (1996) and. Moda center (1995) in Portland given the time frame.
That reno in 1995 is what I was referring to about the sonics (as a team as it was a different owner at the time). If the Seattle expansion bid was successfully I think Seattle over TB is the city that would get picked for 1992. Thought they’d have had to figure out an arena like the Tacoma Dome to temporarily play in before a tear down and rebuild of the arena was completed mid 90’s.There was no way politically it was getting paid for so close to the 1995 renovation and the fact T-Mobile Park and Centurylink were just built.
I'm not even sure Centurylink will get public funds next time it needs rebuilt in the coming decades. It's probably due a renovation after the world cup. The city will point to Climate Pledge and I think the Sofi stadium has shown the preference to move to a privately funded model (at least in the west coast).

Indoor facility, has way more events than an outdoor one in the rainy northwest. If you have both NHL and NBA, plus concerts and other events, you're looking at over 220 days a year it will be used. More likely to make money financing an indoor facility. Unfortunately for OVG, keeping that roof cost them way more than simply tearing it all down and building brand new. Plus, they don't even own the land. But, I'm sure they have calculated that they can make money.it'll get the public funds since its the NFL and they don't need to be in Seattle proper
Always felt making the roof a landmark was dumb. When people think of that area they only care about the space needle, maybe at a push the armory. As long as there was still an arena at the sight no one would have cared what it looked like.Indoor facility, has way more events than an outdoor one in the rainy northwest. Add in MLS for Seattle, you're probably closer to 80 events a year at Lumen Field.
With the field, Seattle is a perfect example of why teams don't just all put down grass. Sharing with the Sounders, so the middle of a grass field would get torn up by the Hawks between Sounders games late in the season from Sept to Oct and whatever playoff games the Sounders get.Lumen has a fair amount of events these days- sounders, Seahawks, reign and dragons then concerts and monster truck stuff. The turf is absolute trash right now. God knows how they'll make the world cup work with grass. I imagine if memorial stadium gets rebuilt the reign may move there, possibly dragons too. A rebuilt memorial stadium with modern facilities could be class given it's back drop, especially if it was 10-15,000. Reign could still play the odd big game at lumen. Wish the dragons would use UW. It's not like husky stadium gets used much outside of college season and graduation. It's a great stadium
Grass would work if it was just the hawks and sounders but reign and dragons on top of it is too much wear and tear. With the field, Seattle is a perfect example of why teams don't just all put down grass. I don't know if there is new technology or method of cutting up portions of the field and replacing it with new grass so that the seams seal properly to ensure a safe playing surface for the athletes between a football to soccer match. I've seen video of the field at Tottenham stadium where they can remove the grass field to reveal the NFL turf underneath and store it for over a week. Think the field came out in multiple sections. But, still, how many days does the grass need to sit after it is returned onto the surface before the Tottenham Spurs can safely play a soccer match? 2, 7, 10 days? If it is under a week, then you can have a grass surface during NFL season.
2 month overlap for regular season between hawks and sounders. They’d have to work closely together to figure out scheduling. Like the hawks would need to do 2 straight weekends at Lumen Field then go on the road for 2 weekends and have a 20 day break between football games. But how would the field hold up with all of the football dibbits for a soccer match. You can play football the next day after soccer on the same field but can’t play soccer the next day after football. Surface is too chewed up in the middle.Grass would work if it was just the hawks and sounders but reign and dragons on top of it is too much wear and tear.
The monster truck stuff with all the soil on top especially does a number.
I'm guessing for the world cup year, the sounders and reign will have to play away for a while or play elsewhere till after it. Seahawks won't be affected
What is up with the Mariners? I’m reminded of that old saying, “you can’t win the World Series in April, but you can definitely lose it.”
This team shouldn’t be two games under .500 at ANY point.
