OT: Non-Kraken Local Sports (Mariners, Seahawks, Sounders, etc.)

My reaction when hearing Geno Smiths contract:

Only 40 million guaranteed and the rest incentive laden. Essentially a 2 year deal which means they likely still draft a QB to develop.

Or the TV deal, or the..., or the....

Same sh*** different year IMO.
Seattle will get a team. Seems like it’s way easier for them to get an nba team in terms of hassles than Houston or Atlanta getting an nhl team despite already having another pro team in the arena. But the key difference is that the Seattle arena was privately funded vs public funds and handing over the arena control to the primary tenant.

It helps that the kraken owners are interested in getting one. Seattle really wants one and at points the sonics were bigger than the Seahawks. Vegas are building a second arena.

Places like Milwaukee would probably be a great hockey place but the bucks aren't interested. Probably same with Portland unless Jody Allen wants one.

It sucks that the sonics didn't want NHL in the 90s. Pretty much sabotaged it

Completely sabotaged it when the nba partners of the bid privately spoke to the nhl before their presentation and told them they were out and left their partners hanging.

But lack of nhl foresight in not telling the Seattle group, hey we are going to likely get more teams later so, keep working on finding new partners and working with the city on the arena.

In a bad way, those nba partners of the time screwed the city when the sonics left 15 years after the key renovations. Sucks for the city and fans.

Portland, Allen’s will requires all sports teams to be sold. Just a matter of time for the blazers I believe not just the Seahawks. Then it falls into the hands of the new blazers owners.

Milwaukee is tough given their proximity to Chicago and smaller market. Plus now the Haslems who own the Browns own the bucks.

I think Seattle is fortunate now that ovg want the arena filled every night to recoup their investment. Whether that be concerts, NHL, WNBA, NBA or college/junior basketball and hockey. Would absolutely hate the kraken to play second fiddle to the NBA.

I still wish the arena was built beside the other stadiums. I like climate pledge but it's a pain in the ass to get to and get parked versus taking the light rail to the others.

I think Allen can bid against owners for ownership from what I remember but it's definitely interesting times in Portland. Agreed on Milwaukee, probably the same for salt lake as well and the jazz.

Sure. Maybe, eventually....probably at least 20 years after the sh'' the NBA pulled back then.

Though, when you hear Adam Silver starting to talk about dilution of talent you clearly understand that those 30 billionaires want absolutley nothing to do with expanding their league and sharing their money with two more billionaires.

Relocation is the other option with the pelicans and grizzlies in smaller markets.

The chat is the owners want expansion fees to recoup COVID losses. Those expansion fees will be in the billion + range. I don't think it was ever happening with David Stern alive though, I think he took it personally

Now that Milwaukee sold for $3.5 billion and Phoenix sold for $4 mill (valuation on the whole team), expansion fee for what is expected to be Seattle and probably Vegas will be at least what Milwaukee, a middle of the pack or so franchise is worth.

4 billion x2 split across those owners is a big chunk of change. Can't believe how much of a dumbass Howard Schultz was. Sold the sonics for $350 million. Seattle had a massive tech boom right after with Amazon and others growing crazily and the NBA's tv deal is pretty damn good now. He'd have made so much money not selling the team. The thunder got good right after as well with Seattle's players/draft picks.

Seattle eventually would have done something about the arena. The appetite just wasnt there as lumen field and T-Mobile park had been built not long before with tax payer money and key arena was renovated about 10 years before which the NBA praised

Short sited. I mean the key was renovated and opened within a year or so before the Moda Center opened down the I5. Massive difference between the 2 over these 27 years.

Relocation is the other option with the pelicans and grizzlies in smaller markets.

Relocation has been fought by the league since moving the Sonics and the pushback they received for that move.

I mean, just look at the Kings situation where they actively brought in their new owner(he was a Warriors minority owner before) and then made a decision on eventualities(they didn't even own the land to built that arena on at that point) in order to keep the team there.

Good for Sacramento and Kings fans, though.

BTW: Their last three moves were from Vancouver(that market never got a real chance) to Memphis, Charlotto to New Orleans and Seattle to OKC.

I doubt market size matters to them that much and the league has done everything they can(much like the NHL with Arizona) in order to keep that team in New Orleans.

The owners don't want to split the revenues with two more owners no matter if it covers the COVID losses or not.
Just listen to Mark Cuban on that issue and how the exansion fees might be nice, but won't get close to what the owners would be giving up in the long run by splitting revenues by 32 and not 30.

Also, Silver was Stern's right hand man for over 20 years and part of every single one of those decisions.
He might make a bit more positive remarks but as soon as people actually talk about it he always throws water on it(not the right time, not now, blah blah blah...) while also now talking about dilution of talent.

Schultz was an absolute idiot and them voting(5-4) in favour of selling the team even though the negotiated with a totally different guy than Bennett(who was introduced to them in the eleventh hour) just shows how shortsighted and desperate to get rid of that asset Schultz actually was.

BTW: I'm not sure if Seattle would've done something with the arena as there where mostly half a$$ed attamepts and even Ballmer coming in at the end looks more like a PR stunt when looking back at it.

I mean, the city could've gotten an extra $30M payment if they would've approved an arena rebuilt but not gotten back an NBA team within five years.

Sonics owner screwed the market out of the nhl in the early 90’s only to get a half a$$ reno which a dozen years later leads to the nba leaving.

Seattle was the expected favorite for an nhl team that round.

What is probably the most infuriating about that situation was the lack of nhl foresight to tell the Seattle group, to keep working on your bid. Find another parter or investor. We actually have a plan to move from 24 teams to 28 or something before the millennium. Keep working with the city on the arena deal.

But nope…. So everyone lost….

I grew up in Vancouver and was finishing high school when the Sonics won it all. I used to listen to games on the radio.
We then got the Grizzlies, who were just frickin’ awful and managed badly.
When the lying POS owner moved them, and the Sonics ended up in OKC, I stopped watching.

I’d love to see the Sonics return, and play at Climate Pledge. It’s looooooong overdue.

I think ballmer might have been legit. He was the big money behind the failed Chris Hansen relocation from Sacramento and seems to be pouring money into getting the clippers their own arena and bought the team for a steep price. I think he just ran out of patience or realized Seattle wasn't getting a team in the near future. Hansen disappeared once ballmer bought the clippers.

I do think Seattle and Vegas are getting a team soon. There is too much noise. I don't think Vegas would be building a second arena otherwise without some hint of it and I just get the impression ovg/bonderman know something in the Seattle side, even just a rough timeline.

Vancouver got shafted so bad. I think there was just a lot of bad luck and bad timing. The Canadian economy and dollar tanking didn't help. Feels like the league should have stuck with it though. I know players didn't want to go there back then but I think it might have changed now, especially with the success of the raptors.

It kind of blows my mind that a city the size of Vancouver that is so wealthy only has 1 of the top 5 north american sports. I get why no NFL die to cfl but it could support NBA and MLB. Always thought it weird Vancouverites supporting the blue Jays. I get they are the only Canadian team but they are so far away. Would be like us supporting a Boston team.

I too will never understand Vancouverites supporting the Jays. I think it’s because they’re so bombarded with all things Toronto by Sportsnet and TSN, the two national networks. It’s drilled into us all that it’s somehow unpatriotic not to cheer for the Blue Jays. It reaches nauseating levels, frankly.

In fairness, though, the M’s have never really marketed the team in BC after Edgar blew out a knee in a glorified spring training game in Vancouver in the mid Nineties.
Since then it’s been crickets. You can pick up the Mariners on TV in Vancouver, but not the rest of the province.

I don't blame them for not following the Mariners given they stunk for a lot of that time. I imagine if they were perennial contenders you would get more from up there following, similar to the Seahawks although NFL is just king in general.

So did the Jays, though. Perennially hyped by the house network, though, so the casuals always believed, even when Boston and the Yankees would run away with the division every year.

I recall in the 90s-00s in Vancouver area being able to watch the Blue Jays and Mariners on local tv (cable) as each team had their runs. I beleive that Rogers & BlueJays took over all Canada as their "local territory" and with SportsNet coming online & expanding, they wanted to ensure their content. As result the Mariners were removed from Vancouver TVs. There still would be the random game (weekly ?) but not daily.

One thing I LOVE about Rogers & BlueJays is their "BlueJays in 30" show. Watch a full baseball game in 30 minutes. You do not get every pitch but an edited/accelerated version of a ball game. Sportsnet then runs it on a loop from like 10pm through the night. I rarely have the time to watch a full baseball game but this was a great option.
