I remember getting my wife a jersey ~2/3 years ago in Nassau. Kept telling her how much of a stud this kid was gonna be. She almost wanted a Wally jersey but went with Dobber. As the shop employee hands the brand new #8 jersey to her, the guy behind her in line says loudly to no on in particular "Yikes, he's going to get traded before he ever makes this team".

I turned around and said he was a f***ing idiot. God I love being right.

This kid is a bona fide stud already, with potential to be a legit Top-15 D-man in the league.
This why he should be locked up at 8 years/$72M just like MacAvoy was as he is up to that level in the next year or so.....no need for bridging this guy!
He is already past the bridge.

No shot he's getting 9.5 a year on his next contract.

Bridge him, go for 3 years, I'm sure he wants 2. If you can do a shorter deal to keep him an RFA that would be perfect IMO

30 points on the season, a nice benchmark hit. 40 looks easily attainable, maybe 50 is possible considering his pace since early December. The kid is killing it, his offensive upside may have been underestimated during the draft process. The defensive side should catch up with experience, but having a 40/50pt RHD is as valuable as it gets in the NHL.

Thanks again to all the teams that passed on him!

How long before Dobson surpasses Pulock in the eyes of Isles fans?

Depends, right now Dobson is ahead of Pulock but next season will be very telling where they both stand between each other.

Will Dobson replicate or build on his success this season or regress? How would Pulock be looking if he never got hurt and was playing with Pelech this whole time?

I don't think there would be any incentive from Dobson's camp to go long term, but I would probably offer Dobson 7.1M per x 8 years if I was Lou...

Dobson would be become unanimous #1 on the team with that cap hit and between him, Pelech, and Pulock the team's top three defenseman would all be signed long term at a clean 19M cap hit. Less than 20M for a legit #1, #2, and a #3 would be robbery.

Realistically, we probably see a 2-3 bridge deal.

If Pulock had Dobson's accuracy he'd be a dangerous offensive weapon.

Right now Pulock is only dangerous to the ice gang that has to replace the glass panels.
I think Pulock can use the long offseason he's about to get. He doesn't look right on the ice right now. I hope he takes the time off to get his body back in shape and is back at 100% in the Fall.

Dobson can also use the long offseason to get into the weight room. That's one the area he could really improve on. It will come with time as he matures (barely 22 still leaves some time to develop man strength)....he'll never be a physical defenseman that Mayfield is, but just developing a measure of strength will help round his game out significantly.

I had some pretty high expectations for him this year. On a podcast show I wrote in saying I thought he'd get 16 goals and 45 points. They said they hope I'm right, but they don't think he's going to get close to that.

Well, barring injury, he may very well hit those marks. Or at least come pretty close to them.

He's been the lone bright spot all year. I'm very happy for him.

I think it's happened already.

For me, I think they just do different things. If Dobson can round out his defensive game he'll be significantly better than Pulock. Right now though, Pulock is better at shutting down the opposition.
Gun to my head I think I still take Pulock right now for his shutdown abilities like you said. But Dobson is definitely closing the gap fast.

I've said it a few times (and in this thread somewhere, I think) that there is no incentive for Dobson's agent to go long-term right now.

The smarter move is to bridge for 3 years and see where the cap is headed then, which gives Dobson more time to establish his real value and his agent to see what the market for those kinds of players will be when the cap starts moving up again.

I mean 50 Million is nothing to sneeze at either. That would make him the highest AAV on the team. If these guys are all still taking discounts, which they have, we could see a long term deal come together. My guess is still a bridge deal but I wouldn't be surprised if Dobson is fine taking a market value discount to make the team competitive when everyone else has.

Absolutely, it's possible that Dobson wants the guaranteed money now and will start investing immediately. 56M (7M per x 8 years) today could be worth more than 64M (8M per x 8 years) in 2-3 years if you strategically grow your money. If NYI were to offer him 7/1 bonuses (are those still a thing?) and front load the shit out of the contract it may just entice Dobson to sign on now.

Plus, say he signs a 7-8 year deal now. He may end up getting another big deal at 29-30 depending on how well he ages...it's an interesting thought. The main negatives are NYI losing so cap space by forgoing a bridge deal and take on some risk if Dobson regresses.

Again any 8 years deal will have to be $72M minimum to be taken seriously.
I read a lot about a bridge contract of 2-3years....in my book that would be a $7M/year deal.

Nelson has been a bright spot for me. He has chance to score 30. Nothing to sneeze at in today's game and certainly nothing to sneeze at on today's islanders

Fair enough. Although I really like Nelson, I wouldn't mind seeing what we can get for him either. Then again, I'm of the belief that our window is closed and we should be shopping almost everyone. I can also see the argument for keeping Nelson.

Plus with the lack of depth at C, I kinda hope we hang on to him. He's a solid 2 way player. It could be argued that he and the Pelican are our 2 best players all around
