The late start gave this game a strange feel from the get go. Then being broadcast on Sportsnet made it a challenge to stay awake.

Hellebuyck with some big saves early in the game, which Ottawa should have led in the first 10 minutes. Hellebuyck with some soft goals to give Ottawa the lead. Hellebuyck for the W.

Early in the game I was thinking that Stastny looked hurt, because he seemed a step behind the play, but he made a difference. That line had a really strong game. Led by Ehlers zone entries and two smart players making smart plays. Copp was noticeably strong on a few defensive plays.

Connor was feeling it tonight too. The instinctual chemistry of this line is fun to watch. The defensive lapses can be frustrating to watch, but that's hockey.

3rd line looked better with Vesalainen demoted. He just didn't seem to match the pace of Lowry and Appleton, and was tentative for much of the game. I'd still like to see Ves and Gus with Lewis at some point, maybe next game? But I don't think Harkins should come out of the lineup to keep Vesalainen in it. So be interesting to see if there are changes for the Oilers game. I can't say I noticed Harkins much at centre. Perreault was good, I was cheering for the TD lob pass, that would have been a beaut.

PP won it for us, which was nice to see. I am really digging this look with Wheeler behind the goal line, he's using all of his options which makes it hard to read what he is going to do.

Defense was still pretty scrambled, especially early. Morrissey-De Melo did not look tight at all. De Melo seemed a bit off, but I thought gradually improved. Forbort again had a strong game. Beaulieu is undoubtedly our toughest defenseman. Another strong effort on the PK, and he moved the puck well. His scrap in the 1st seemed to change the tide a little, but at the same time it was also kind of pointless. I was amazed he didn't go into concussion protocol after getting a puck off the bean, but I wouldn't be surprised if he sat next game, especially if Poolman is ready to come back in. Just for a rest. Thought Stanley was pretty good too. Having that wing span is something he seems to be using more to his advantage. I thought it was good to keep him in this game over Heinola, just because you knew it was going to be amped up a bit physically.

Good team effort to win tonight.

Forbert was so slow on their 1st goal and the guy drove right around him as if was a pylon.

Great recap as usual, but I struggle with the concept of not deserving a EN goal. People act like it is some sort of reward, when in reality it is preserving a game which is a good thing. In most situations your best offensive players are your best option with an empty net because they are most likely to first gain, then keep possession and then move the puck into a position to score the EN goal.
I agree about the EN situation, but I thought that the Stastny line was much more solid and the ENG would have been nice for Copp, if it panned out.

Fun stuff.
Winning helps with the gut punch from earlier in the day.
Depth scoring came through.
Nice to see Stastny cash in on one of those chances.
Wheeler played a bit better (I'm pretty hard on him in general)
I wish Heinola was still in the mix as he was a standout the previous game.
Demelo needs to be in there too so figure something else out.

Hopefully we can find a strong effort tomorrow to keep this going.

He definitely got his feet tangled on that one going the wrong way. Otherwise I thought he was strong in both zones.
Really can’t remember him offensively. Most i can say is don’t notice him except that one play. Good quiet game. Which makes the one play stick out that much more.

While he's not necessarily offensively dynamic, he makes smart plays at the offensive bluline and is good at keeping it in, and deciding when to pinch.

He's just the type of defenseman you need to have a quiet uncomplicated game.

PP1 usage. I know there's only so many spots to go around but now that Laine is gone we should try Ehlers in his spot.
Why? Our pp was really good tonight but what is laine’s position? Kc’s spot? As wheeler and stastny have looked good close in. So that leaves Morrisseys spot and schief which he had last year.

Yeah esp with Laine gone, PP1 is not a sure thing to score anymore so we need 2 solid units that can score and Ehlers can help on that 2nd unit to accomplish that.

The new pp looks more effective but ehlers will have pld or another great player on his unit with him and copp.

Would love to see Copp-PLD-Ehlers but can't see a world where Copp doesn't reunite with Lowry and take big defensive matchups. I just don't see Paul dropping Lowry to the 4th.

Even Chevy tipped the hat to PLD centering the 2nd line and Stastny playing the wing. Calls for Lowry to center the 4th are HIGHLY unlikely.

So Ves gets two games and then gets the harkin treatment bummer for him. But equally tough for copp to be bumped out of a scoring role back with Lowry. When does poolman come back and bump Stanley?
