No fans

Even if it’s the middle of the summer there’s absolutely no excuse for having 30 fans in the stands for the WJC. Embarrassing
I honestly thought it was something to do with Covid related restrictions still for people Corning from different parts of the world.

To now find out it has nothing to do with it is pretty shocking. I watched Finland Latvia and Canada Latvia and couldn’t believe the small amount of people.

The true extent of what he did was hidden for a while, actually.

It's not really "making up your own story" when Hockey Canada has already admitted to doing it. :help:

Also, no one's "crying" for any Russians, but those players should obviously be in this tournament. It's ****ing ridiculous to exclude them.

Obviously what he did was unknown for some time, that doesn't make your statement accurate. Hockey Canada "buying silence" by settling with victims of Graham James is a laughable stretch, but it is the internet and people love to grandstand. And yes, keep crying for the poor, poor Russian teens. Certainly it's unfortunate for them that Russia got itself banned. It's not as if Russia did something as horrific as settle with victims of Graham James or settle a sexual harassment allegation that produces no charges after a police investigation.

right now I doubt Id find time to go to the game for free, maybe on the weekend but not a weekday.
not going to lie. I kinda forgot the WJC was even on

the overall superiority attitude needs to end period. This should be brought up each time.
It's all we have

....It's not accurate that Hockey Canada has used taxpayer money to buy silence of sexual assault victims? I submit that that's entirely accurate.

But fine, call it "grandstanding" for me to state the obvious.

And yes, it is indeed unfortunate that the IIHF somehow made the rash decision to ban a team of teenage Russian hockey players from participating in their tournament while other Russian athletes have been free to compete in events around the world without any ridiculous and laughably unnecessary ban in effect.

IMO it boils down to:

- Timing: This is a Christmas tourney. People just aren't into it in the middle of summer. As others have said, people are either working or off on vacation.

- Hockey Canada: I'm sure everyone is aware of the recent scandal. No doubt that has impacted attendance.

- Ticket prices: This is the big one IMO. It's just too f***ing expensive. I'm sorry, but paying $100 ($150-$200 if you're factoring in food, parking, etc.) to watch Latvia play just isn't feasible for a lot of people right now.

I wanted to take my daughter and was prepared to take time off work. But saw the ticket prices and just laughed. My brother in the same boat as me. What a bonehead move making tickets that expensive.

This just looks pathetic, they should just give the tickets away for free. Are there even any food services at the arena? Can't imagine them making a profit selling hot dogs to 50 people

I'm glad that you backtracked from your stupid Graham James claim. Now, your claim is not entirely accurate as far as any of us know. We know that Hockey Canada settled with a person who made an accusation of sexual assault. You don't know if the person is a victim, and neither does anyone on this site. We do know that no charges came out of a criminal investigation from the police, who certainly know more about it than you do. But again, don't let what you know and what you don't know get in the way of grandstanding. I'm sure that some taxpayer money went into the settlement with the accuser, with taxpayer money being around 10% of Hockey Canada's budget. Quite a smoking gun right there.

The Helen Lovejoy act is hilarious though regarding Russia. Grandstanding about a sexual assault allegation on one hand, hand wringing about the poor teenagers who can't play due to actions many magnitudes worse on the other. I don't think Russia should be banned from hockey but I'm also not going around grandstanding as if I were a moral authority on things I've barely looked into.

Can't go in summer because people are busy doing summer things, as if people aren't busy on Christmas and New Years right?

They aren’t doing stuff outside.

I’m at a cottage in PEI right now.

It’s just a bad time to expect people to buy expensive tickets and go to games.

CANADIANS will need to remember this when they complain about empty seats at the worlds and other events.
they have empty seats at xmas though. not at noon on a weekday in augest between latvia/germany or whoever is on the bottom end of the pools

Switched over to a replay of the Ultimate Disc matchup between Colorado and Portland on FS2 during a commercial break of the US game.

Crazy that pulled more people into the crowd than World Juniors in Edmonton.

Or is it a cabin?

So the IIHF is alone, is it?

Like the World Cup of soccer?

The biggest problem is the ticket pricing. August or December, it doesn't matter. If the tickets were priced correctly the arenas wouldn't be empty. I hope this is a wake up call for Hockey Canada and IIHF.

You’re not a hockey fan if you really believe this garbage. Honestly, anyone who supports to bar athletes from competition because of political games around the world is an idiot
As long as your countrys leaders uses sports for political purposes, it is quite understandable that your getting shut out for the same. From a hockey standpoint I`d want to have Russia there, but from ethical reasons not.

Actually, very select few sports still allow Russians to compete. From the top of my head, I actually only know about tennis. And even then you could argue (as ATP does) that it's only so because it is indeed an individual sport where no one plays under a certain flag per se.

Even federations historically waist-deep in the Russian pocket like FIFA or FIDE had enough common sense.

And in tennis they’re not competing for “Team Russia”, but themselves. Still should be banned however.

To echo @ViD s statement - anyone who does not understand why Russia’s banned from all sports is an idiot.

But they can relax, the Capitals are still going strong, they can gather around that red….machine…

I know quite a few people who can't be bothered going due to no Russia and it being a watered down tournament.

Ya, no one cares about the scandal IMO. I've been playing ball hockey for the last 4 months and the post game brews in the parking lot it hasn't come up once. There was literally no marketing for this tourney and barely anyone knows about it, that's about it.

.....take a guess why there's been no marketing for the tournament

Also, there's more to hockey fandom then hockey bros and their opinions drinking brews after games. I have literally given examples in this thread of people I've spoken to who are not watching because of the sexual assault allegations.

It's a pretty good thing too, IMO. Shows that more and more people doesn't accept organizations and teams stupid/criminal activities, putting more pressure on other ones to be better orgs/companies.
