No fans

$150+ to see Canada play
$50+ to see 2 teams nobody wants to watch play
$200+ for the gold medal game ( someone is actually asking $1,000 for a resale seat )

In August....

Even without any Hockey Canada scandals, people were not going to this and were not paying these prices..

You want to fill the place...What they should have done is let kids into the games for free with 1 adult buying a ticket.

So, okay, August, summer holidays, stupid ticket prices and simply quite wrong time for a hockey tournament. But still, that's like completely empty there - in Canada. I would totally understand half or even largely empty stands like maybe three, four thousand fans for Finland-Czech Republic etc. But basically empty? Something doesn't compute - is it the scandal then?
with the scandal many big sponsors pulled out. Which also means there were no world Jr commercials leading up to the tournament hyping it up the past few moths. But also the tournament is watered down many big names and russia ain't there, high prices for mid day games between teams no one cares a ton about. And summer is beautiful in edmonton at this time, most people are taking advantage of the short golf season, the lakes, or are on vacation. And after the scandals theres no real sense of pride to feel obligated to go support the program at the moment.

The hockey isn't even that good. Not even Canadians want to watch their side steam roll some patsy. Year in, year out its only about four or five countries that have a chance to win at the highest level of international hockey (across all levels). It's even worse in the women's game. Shoot, I think the WBC is more competitive!

I'm not taking time off work to pay $150 to Watch a juniors game, especially when its 30 celcius out. Would rather enjoy the summer and use that time off for vacation. Edmontonians have 6 months of sitting inside coming up in a few months, they'll embrace hockey then.

The planning of this was atrocious. The ticket prices are madness.

The IIHF and Hockey Canada would have been way better off going to a smaller community and rink (like Kelowna, Regina, Kingston, Sherbrooke, etc), or quite frankly, not doing it at all and just re-grouping for December 2022.

You cannot change that it‘s summer, that some players are missing or that Edmonton had long runs…
But ffs change the pricing. 10$ and you make more money.

Oth, why not get embarrassed further?

I honestly couldn't care less about it. I always watch it and I love it but this postponed bs really through me off, feels gimmicky AF.

Congrats to whoever wins it, bye.

Even if it’s the middle of the summer there’s absolutely no excuse for having 30 fans in the stands for the WJC. Embarrassing

Middle of summer, expecting to charge NHL prices, a huge scandal involving Hockey Canada...

No. Some pretty good reasons.

I know a lot of people who don't/didn't know it was even going on. I just found out about it last week and that was only because of HFboards.

It's the middle of August. People in Alberta and area are either working, or taking whatever time they do get off, to get way out of town because it's camping season. The few months of the year where you can actually enjoy the outdoors, festivals and events, etc. Even barring getting out of town, it's one of the few precious months of patio season where people would rather just watch the games on TV drinking on a patio somewhere. There's only like a month left before sweater weather and the potential first snowfall of the year..

It's also a subpar tournament missing a top team, with totally over-the-top prices that look like they were set for a Christmas holidays schedule and never adjusted. With a middle of the work day schedule that also looks like it was never adjusted from an arrangement designed for winter holidays. In a market that's already been pretty saturated with a long extended season for both the NHL and WHL clubs.

7 games played so far, only 1 game had over 1000 fans in the arena. Canada vs Latvia had 2779 fans in an arena that takes 21,000 fans IIRC (?) haha, NOIIIIIICE.

Without Russia and a bunch of key players who've decided to skip the tournament and prepare for the upcoming NHL training camps, this tournament is a lame duck, and the fans know it.

But I'm becoming seriously concerned about the competitive balance in international hockey. I mean countries like Austria, Latvia and the Czech Republic don't seem to be improving at all. Who wants to watch another 8- or 11-1 beatdown? Even Switzerland and Germany don't appear to be improving that much to me either.

There are really only four teams with a chance to win this thing year after year--Canada, the U.S., Finland and Sweden. And Russia as a fifth--assuming they get back in someday.

As for the rest of the games---forget about it.

The reason for no fans is simple, Canada has used the "it's not best on best" and "it's because the corrupt IIHF refs" excuse too many times. So now that no one goes to watch they can go "Well no one even cared about this summer tournament" when they lose in the finals.

A bunch of players who were here in December aren’t here so it is watered down.

....It's not accurate that Hockey Canada has used taxpayer money to buy silence of sexual assault victims? I submit that that's entirely accurate.

But fine, call it "grandstanding" for me to state the obvious.

And yes, it is indeed unfortunate that the IIHF somehow made the rash decision to ban a team of teenage Russian hockey players from participating in their tournament while other Russian athletes have been free to compete in events around the world without any ridiculous and laughably unnecessary ban in effect.
Maybe you should fact check , before stating fact.

The international governing bodies for basketball, soccer and hockey—FIBA, FIFA and the IIHF, Olympics, F1, Tennis, all world athletics, too numerous to list them all.
They banned Russian teams from competition in the wake of invasion of Ukraine.

For a complete list, since I was too lazy to type them all.

You weren’t even close in your post. Lol

Best on best is a term used to designate senior tournaments in which all NHL players can participiale (World Cup, Canada Cup, Olympics), it has nothing to do with the u20 level
Then why were a lot of Canada fans whining about the kids that didn't get to go cos they are getting ready for the NHL season?
