I can't believe that our group-think ploy of planting innumerable Edm->NJ Adam Larsson/Damon Severson/John Merrill/Nail Yakupov/RNH/Hall/Drai rumors actually worked.

We could hope that Chia was reading them and would overgenerously respond with a Nail for Merrill or perhaps (should we dream) Drai for Severson...

But never, ever, did I believe that he'd sap for the 'Larsson is untouchable' rap we've been spouting collectively as Devils fans.

Truth:
Larsson shows flashes of elite defensive play... (but gets bailed out by Greene as much as you would expect)

Larsson shows flashes of elite passing ability... (but just as often doesn't)

Larsson shows flashers of growing into his body and becoming a physical shutdown defenseman... (ok, this one is the truth and this was a pretty big step for him this year. He took a giant step from 'young defenseman' to 'very reliable second-pairing guy on a Stanley Cup team'/'first pairing on the Devils'...

Larsson's shot is mediocre... (good deflectable wrister, slapper isn't notable.)

Larsson's skating is average... (can't figure this one out - he sometimes looks slow and gets beaten... then he sometimes hustles back and breaks up a play). He's certainly no Niedermayer - more Paul Martin-esque, big strides... not quick at all.

Larsson's head is a question mark... (I think this is the make or break point. He's 22. When he plays with confidence and has the trust of the coaching staff, he's capable of being a 30-minute shut-down first pairing all situation Dman today. When he doesn't have confidence, and everyone's down on him - he gets timid... He was headed for bust-land until Scott Stevens showed some faith. Then he rapidly turned the corner and didn't look back. What will happen if folks start booing? Hmmm...

Lol the Islanders have to play Hall six times a year now. Good.

I really don't think much of this trade. I guess Lucic and Larsson in, Hall out is a net gain, but boy are we banking hard on Larsson.

Good deal for both sides, dealing from a position of strength to fill a big need, hope it works out.

He is 23 and turning 24 in November

Edmonton should have gone after Subban not Larsson. A 3 way trade would have been good.
Hall to Nsh
Weber to MTL
Subban to Edm

How do you still not get it? Hall got you Adam Larsson and yet you still think he coulda got PK Subban. Some people man.

Haha, your fist comment is about the Islanders. Spin doctoring as usual.

I won't give you any further grief over this deal if you admit you were wrong about Hall's value this one time.

Subban was on the market. I think Chiarelli should have swung for the fences here and made a bigger deal to trade Hall plus for Subban.
Both the Larsson deal and the Reinhart deal seem like a lot of assets were given up for fairly modest improvement.

I'm going to have a brain auerisum the next time I see someone compare Larsson to Hedman.

Hedman is a LEGIT stud #1 Larsson is a #4 with #2 POTENTIAL.

They have nothing in common besides nationality...

I have always said Hedman Light. Larsson will become a #1 d-man but not a franchise #1. There is a difference. Hedman is a franchise #1 d and it went faster for him to learn the NHL than it did for Larsson but Larsson is a two way d-man who will just get better and better offensively. Hedman is a faster skater but Larsson has so far not been instructed to be so offensive. In Edmonton he will be given more freedom to join the rush. Klefbom-Larsson will be an awesome first pair and to a low price cap wise.

Good deal for both sides, dealing from a position of strength to fill a big need, hope it works out.

Thats like saying Benn for a signed Shattenkirk is a good deal for both sides because Dallas need top 2 defensemen and Blues need a #1C(ye i know Benn is usually a winger but plays both).

Benn is easily better than Shatty.
Hall is easily better than Larsson.
Benn is easily better than Hall.
Shatty is easily better than Larsson.

Benn for signed shatty= fair deal with that kind of thinking.

Edm adressed a need for a top 4 defensemen by trading their most valuable player(not Mcjesus) and still have a huge need for a #1.

Overpaying for Subban would have been a much better thing to do.
Hall+Nurse+Puljujarvi for Subban for example(overpaying imo)
Rnh+Yak+2017 first for Larsson(still a overpayment imo but better than giving up Hall).

Lucic-Mcjesus-Pouliot
maroon-Draisatl-eberle

Klefbom-Subban
Sekera-Larsson

Sign Lucic(overpay for him in free agency ofc)
I think Edm could easily have gotten Subban but wasnt willing to give up what it would take which unpossibly could have been a bigger overpayment than Hall for Larsson.

Just an example, not saying it is easy but i cant understand how it wasnt possible. I do think alot of GM`s arent as high on Subban as us fans but still he is definetly a #1.

Edm gave up a proven top LW for an unproven top 2 defensemen. Proven top 4 after 5 years in the league, nothing more, nothing less.

I get HERO charts aren't the be all end all.... but Edmonton traded Taylor Hall for this;

All that is essentially a #5, bordering on becoming a #4 for a premier scoring winger.

One Chicago radio, they talk about the Subban trade and Stamkos signing.

This trade? Nothing. Are the Oilers that low hanging fruit? Shocked.

I guess it feels a bit like when a young Chris Chelios was traded for the high-scoring dennis Savard or maybe when a struggling Young Chris Pronger was traded for the young stud forward Brendan Shanahan?

I'm not sure that either Hall or larsson will become hof guys but there is precedence that struggling young stud dmen are worth first line studs.

i guess the ed jovanovski for pavel bure and the sandish ozolinsh for owen nolan deals can also serve as comparables.

when you factor in contracts and team chemistry these deals are difficult for people like us to judge... but they do seam to make sense to real hockey people

Solid shutdown d-men are nice to have, but not for that price. Larsson is going to have to improve his offense by a lot for this deal to be close to even for Edmonton.

D-men in general are more valuable than forwards and this is especially true for Edmonton with so much talent up front and so little in the back, but still. This is a really significant difference in how good they are at their respective positions.

You might want to watch him play. There's a reason he lead the Devils at +15 despite a largely negative goal differential.

This is it. He is a top 4 defensemen and Edm gave up a proven top line winger. Its just not close in value at all even if defenders are worth more than forwards.
