In a vacuum Hall is easily worth more than Larsson but I honestly believe that this trade made the Oilers a better team. With there depth up front and rumors that Lucic is pretty much already an Oiler they were able to absorb the blow of losing a trade. Sometimes I think people get to caught up in wanting to win the trade that they don't look at the big question. Does this trade make our team better? Again I think this trade makes the Oilers a much better team.

Perfectly said.

Larsson is a good player and EDM really needs a guy like him, but he should never in a million years cost Taylor Hall.

If that was the only player NJ wanted except McDavid then? Think about the market and the value to the other team. Give to get.

I'm sorry but this is just horrible.

Hall is a franchise winger. Probably the 3rd best LW in the league behind Ovechkin and Benn.

All he gets back is Adam Larsson? People are acting like he's the second coming of Nik Lidstrom, he's closer to Anton Stralman.

This trade combined with the likely scenario that Lucic is going to sign there makes Edmonton a better team.

Sucks to lose such a talented point producer but the Oilers still have guys like McD, Drai, Pulj, RNH, Eberle to carry the offensive load and I could see another one of them going out in a trade.

The Oilers totally won this trade and he is. Remember how it took Hedman a while to develop too? Young D need time and you guys got a very good one. I really hate this deal.

The thing is that Hedman was a top 10 D by the age of 23, last year he crept into the top 5, and this year he's solidified himself as a top 5 D at the age of 25. It also helps that he has unreal skill and size.

Chiarelli blew it. He got stupid, and desperate, and blew an elite player out for a good defenseman. Poor value. Hall never quit on a team that hung him out to dry for years, and now chia quit on Hall. He's everything an Oiler should be and now he's gone. FU Chiarelli and FU Eberle for eating up the cap space to keep Hall, while mailing it in.

Agree. Larsson is a good defenseman. But Hall is a truly elite forward in this league. You can't make this deal. In terms of rate ES strength scoring, Hall is behind only Crosby and Benn. And his possession numbers are very good. I like Larsson but he's not a guy you trade Hall for.

Did Chiarelli not think to phone about PK Subban? Geez.

young defensemen always are undervalued for the most part. Especially if you aren't putting up big points, other teams fans just think they are bad when really they aren't. (we have a couple of them)

I don't think Larsson is undervalued. He's a good defenseman. He is very good defensively and developing into a Christ Tanev type defensive defenseman extraordinaire. But would anyone really trade Hall for a Tanev?

Maybe there is untapped offensive potential in Larsson, but Hall is a sure thing. A surefire elite forward.

chalk it up to culture change plus they will probably sign lucic or something. It might be a good move

As a Rangers fan, I hate this trade. As a hockey fan, I love it. Happy for the Devils to finally get a top 3 forward, and happy for the Oil to finally go after a potential top pairing defenseman.

On the surface, the Devils definitely win. But if Larsson can continue to develop and improve on last year, Edmonton won't to half bad themselves. Unfortunately, many will view the trade as a loss for Edmonton, and value-wise they probably aren't wrong. But the price of a top pairing young defenseman is at a premium right now, as evident by Larsson being dealt before Shattenkirk and Fowler. And with Edmonton basically having an in-house replacement for Hall in Puljujarvi, along with an abundance of young forward talent, I think they're also winners of this deal.

In short, as a hockey fan, I think this is a great hockey trade for both teams.

Chia built a winner in Boston and has many years of experience. If you think this deal is atrocious, maybe it is you who doesn't understand how things are valued, not him.

The fact is that he inherited a deeply sick team, with no bargaining leverage. Chiarelli got a Dman who can help turn this team around. He did not compromise just to preserve trade value. God knows we have enough trade value laying around, and it all will depreciate if we wait too long. Maybe this trade is proof that it already has.

If Lucic signs with Edmonton there should be an investigation. Funny this trade happens less than 24 hours after it was reported Lucic agreed to sign with the oilers.

Unbelievable how many hockeyfans don't know about Larsson abilities and his development last seasons, he's not sexy but damn good. This is good for Edmonton going forward, going to be fun laughing at y'all later.
I think that's a mjor part of the problem. He played in New Jersey. And let's be honest, it's not usually the team you want to watch from an entertainment point of view. I would assume he's a bit of an uknown comodity for many posters. They just remember that he struggled after he got drafted.

I'll start out by saying Adam Larsson is a very good player in his own right. He is among the best defensive dman in the league and has good, not great offensive skills (tho, not on the pp). But you have to wonder how much of his recent success is due to Andy Greene. Fayne, Severson and Larsson have all looked amazing with Greene. Now, Severson had a good, not great season without Greene, but Fayne hasn't come close w.o him.

The Devils got a superstar for a #2 or #3 dman.

Agreed. A few days ago people were saying that Edmonton may need to lose in a trade to fill in other holes. I think that's what happened here. They dealt from a position of strength and filled a huge hole. Value wise, yes they probably lost, but the hole that was filled may make it easier to swallow.

Wow. Interesting. Edmonton needs a d-man and Larsson has quite a big potential, right? He's big, young, he's a rightie, can play both PP and PK...
Definitely surprising to see the Devils being able to get one of the bigger names in the league. I think it will be interesting to see Taylor Hall on a different team, his play, his production, etc., the same for Larsson.

Haha Stralman is a good dman.. Hall is damn good, but they needed a change and dman of that caliber is harder to find. And with Edmonton struggles the value of their players go down.

Is Larsson not a top pairing defenseman? Honest question. I haven't watched any Devils games. If he is thenot this trade isn't nearly as bad as people are making it out to be.

Ok but Hedman has also been blessed to have a great offence in front of him. Larsson has had scrubs. I totally expect Larsson to break out offensively and the Oilers to take a big step forward this year. Larsson has all the tools.

You mean like the Seguin trade and the Reinhart trade?
Chairelli has made some good moves over his career but let's not act like he hasn't made some horrible trades as well.

If Adam Larsson was on Lidstrom's level it would have cost Hall + Draisaitl + Puljujarvi for him.

I agree with you.

Larsson reminds me a lot of m.e vlasic, just younger with more offensive potential.

He's going to come to the oilers and put up drastically more points.

A year from now is anyone going to be nearly as upset if larsson is your best defensive zone player and manages to put up 35 or so points?
