Surprised at the consensus that the Flames did well here. Maybe I am out of touch...no, it's the children who are wrong.

Its a 35 year old goalie for a 1st rounder and young dman. I am surprised the Flames were able to get a 1st rounder.

That's a great return for Calgary. Goalies, even as good as Markstrom, don't often return a 1st rounder and a solid bottom-pair player. New Jersey needed to do this, however, with how disappointing last season was specifically because their defense and goaltending failed so badly.

what was the deadline demand? i assume new jersey offered more but what was the reported gap? or is it not known
I think the rumoured GM Agreed upon deal was Holtz and the 2024 1st for Markstrom at 50% retention and Calgary's cheap ass ownership nixed it because they wanted more in return for the $3M per year retention

Free agent to cap dump to a 1st and roster player and I don't have to worry about Florida getting the 11th overall next year is a win-win-win.

Even if it's a slight overpay (I don't think it is), Fitz has been trying to land a goalie for years now. Don't mind an overpay at all to finally get out goalie mess figured out.

Goalie mess is figured out for now, but I don't see Mark being the goalie by the time Jack is in the final year or two of his contract. I guess this buys us time to see how Dawes and Schmid progress and then potentially make a move if needed in 3 - 4 years or so.

I think people forget what goalies tend to return in trades.

The problem is usually that there are few comparables for what good goalies get in trade because good goalies seldom actually get traded. Most goalie trades are aging on the decline or unproven prospects, so the trade value of guys like Saros or Ullmark is an unknown.

It'll be a really late 1st rounder IMO

Devils are a good team
That just finished in the bottom ten...
I am guessing it will end up in the early 20s

A 2nd and a crap prospect is effectively what Markstrom was traded for. There isn't much of a difference in value between a 2024 2nd and a 2025 1st, especially with how good the Devils look they'll be next year.
lol cool, I'll trade yah a 2026 2nd for a 2025 1st.

From what I’ve heard the 2025 draft is better.
