That's pretty solid, not many teams have 3rd/4th goalies with waiver exemption as strong as Daws/Schmid. I was hoping NJ added two guys, and Allen as backup works, if he is so bad he has to be buried in the AHL it's a 775k cap hit. Basically a 39 game trial to be an NHL caliber goalie for NJ until he gets replaced by Daws/Schmid.

The goalie UFA market is horrible, the alternative in that backup spot would be signing someone like Chris Dreidger to a 1.15m x 2 year deal.

I am absolutely fine with this now that it's 40 games in the 24-25 season. If he hits that many, he's earned the right to be the 1A, and that's worth a 2nd. If he is not playing well enough to be that, they'll certainly keep him to 39 or less.

The condition should have included the ability to work in the US, the 3rd should be bumped down to a 4th.

Watch Vitek revert to being a league average goalie now that we got another real NHL goalie on the roster with him.

He may play well for the remainder of the season, but only because his season has been absolutely abysmal for a guy that wasn’t old and playing on a bad hip (Schneider) or the last year of ancient Brodeur and injury riddled Blackwood.

Kinkaid’s 18-19 was similar, but even he had 3 shutouts that year and looked like he had a nervous breakdown of his own down the stretch of that year.

Pagnotta suggested the Devils may buyout Vanecek after this year. I know what he says means nothing, but he just suggested it’s a possibility.

His buyout is under a million for the next two years. Pretty doable if nobody wants, like Calgary back for Markstrom. And it may make more sense to buy him out than throw someone a second or third round pick to take his final year if Calgary doesn’t want him.

We gave up a 3rd round pick two drafts from now and got 50% retention. We gave up basically nothing for a goalie who is materially better and more established than what we have. He won't be the starter next year. I really don't understand the compliants.

It is astonishing to me that they don't have these visa issues taken care of as a matter of course. Like 80% of the league is in the US, and it's not exactly hard for pro athletes to get a visa, especially when they're Canadian.
