No, its not - contenders rarely move 2nds for backups
If they get a better goalie, he becomes the back up and it stays a 3rd. If he plays well enough to hit that number? Is he a back up? Not saying he will come in and be the answer, but you have to think through every scenario. But first have to see what Fitz does in the offseason and before that even, see what Allen does the last few games. Was this desperation or some 4d chess. Idk.

I understand not liking giving up a probable 2nd for him, but that may have been needed for the retention to be what it was.

Would you rather have sent a 4th, which becomes a 3rd or even just stays a 4th for him at close to $4 million for next year? I would not.

Allen at $1.9 million for next year is a good deal, unless Fitz stops with this and thinks Allen/Vanecek is an acceptable tandem for next year.

I don't think he does think that, as down as we may be on him.

I can't believe you're the voice of reason when it comes to a goalie move. And I mean that in the best way possible.

Pretty decent chance he hits 40 GP. Hopefully they plan to call up Daws or Schmid for spot starts next year if he gets close.

Be prepared to kiss our 1st or Holtz goodbye as the centerpiece for a Markstrom trade this summer (or maybe both) 🤦‍♂️

I could live with Holtz, he’s not gonna get a chance here anyway and I don’t love the fit on our roster.

If we still go for Father Time Markstrom, especially with first and NHL players like Holtz, in the f'ing offseason along with dumping decent picks for a meh goalie like Allen I'm going to be supremely pissed off.

I think they add a goalie on top in the offseason and also if that goalie gets hurt, Allen probably splits time with Daws or Schmid. It's going to be awfully close and it's kind of not fair to Allen that this condition exists.

But also if it is just with NJ, it increases the likelihood he ends up in whatever deal they make for Markstrom.

Agreed, if they do get a quality starter he could go the other way or we could retain and ship him out at any point since there is always demand for goalies.

I still like to evaluate the trade in the moment, as I really do not see any sure fire goalies that are likely to be traded that I feel comfortable with their performance and health next year.

Why are you cherry picking last year as if it’s more relevant than recent history? He has better numbers than every Devils goalie this year.

Seeing now what the conditions are, this really is just essentially a 3rd round pick. It’s not awful. It’s another experienced goalie who has the ability to play well for stretches. This is clearly not the long term solution (although neither would Markstrom, but I digress)

man, who cares? As if that means anything lol

He'll get say 10 starts this year. That knocks it down to 30 starts next year. In an ideal world Markstrom or Ullmark make 60ish regular season starts leaving 20ish for Allen.

With how desperate he is and the leagues most casual fans knowing it its so widespread , he likely gives up our top-15 pick this year plus Holtz for Markstrom, no retention

The price only gets higher with more bidders

If he hits the condition it means that he's been at least playable, which is so much better than what we have that I'll take it.

Why wouldn't it mean anything? What a weird argument.

We could put you in net and you probably put up better numbers. It's the lowest of low bars.

Point being we basically traded away the Toffoli return, which was already light, for a goalie that isn't going to be good enough for us to make a difference now or next year.

We aren't going to win more games with Allen
