So it's going to be a 2nd. He will hit that between this year and next unless he gets hurt or we waive him.

We don't know if the condition is 40 total games played, 40 games played next year, or 40 games played next year for New Jersey.

40 games played total? there's 20 this year and 82 next... so that seems like a low number. A third itself should have been fine for Allen in decline. A 2nd is not good.

Really surprised I’m one of the more level heads on this deal.

I wouldn’t have been if it wasn’t 50% retention though and Vitek/Allen is not an acceptable tandem next year if we’re serious about playoff berth.

Vitek at all is not acceptable if we’re serious about a playoff berth.

My guess is one of Vitek or Allen are either dumped for next to nothing or used to go back to Calgary in the inevitable Markstrom trade.

I would think the team would rather get rid of Vitek though, since they have to know he’s in nervous breakdown mode and has been all year AND his cap hit is almost twice what Allen’s is with Montreal’s retention.
We're both on this one. Allen has proven to he steady. It may not be top half goaltending, but the cake is pretty much baked, and really he looks in perfectly fine on an average team.

Allen for $1.9 million next year isn’t bad at all. That signals to me that we don’t want Daws or Schmid spending significant time here next year.

We just need to get nutcase Vitek and his $3.4 million off the books and upgrade on him.

Rather this than overpaying for being desperate for a goalie. We got few options to see who we gonna keep alongside the next upcoming 1st goalie next season.

Yeah, as was mentioned by others, this should give some strong insight on the cost of an actual viable goaltender vs. what Jake Allen would be considered.

The cost was probably even more earlier in the season.

I think this is important. Allen is super stable mentally. Doesn't get down on himself, doesn't blame his team, works hard.

40 games through next season and 40 games through next season WITH NEW JERSEY is a pretty major distinction.

With the later we can freely dump him to another team and not have to worry about triggering the condition (and retain even more so they get him for < 1M). If the language just says 40 games played, that's something else entirely.

he had worse numbers last year than Vitek does this year. There is absolutely no need to tie yourself to a goalie like that for more than 20 games.

They should have just gotten Raanta off waivers and ridden him to finish the year and re-assessed in the summer

Why are you cherry picking last year as if it’s more relevant than recent history? He has better numbers than every Devils goalie this year.

Seeing now what the conditions are, this really is just essentially a 3rd round pick. It’s not awful. It’s another experienced goalie who has the ability to play well for stretches. This is clearly not the long term solution (although neither would Markstrom, but I digress)

We still have to play 20 games this season. There’s definitely a chance he hits that quota.
It’s possible but I don’t think it’s likely. We almost certainly add another goalie plus there are still the 3 guys we have this year plus possibly Poulter. I’m sure we won’t let him meet the condition. Unless he’s actually really good for us, and in that case, I won’t exactly be complaining.
