It is astonishing to me that they don't have these visa issues taken care of as a matter of course. Like 80% of the league is in the US, and it's not exactly hard for pro athletes to get a visa, especially when they're Canadian.

Schmid (waiver exempt)

as goalie depth next year.

That's pretty solid, not many teams have 3rd/4th goalies with waiver exemption as strong as Daws/Schmid. I was hoping NJ added two guys, and Allen as backup works, if he is so bad he has to be buried in the AHL it's a 775k cap hit. Basically a 39 game trial to be an NHL caliber goalie for NJ until he gets replaced by Daws/Schmid.

The goalie UFA market is horrible, the alternative in that backup spot would be signing someone like Chris Dreidger to a 1.15m x 2 year deal.

Yeah, we can win a lot of games with Markstrom as the #1. Allen would be okay as a #2 to that workhorse.

getting a better goalie than worst in the league is nothing to brag about. That is my entire point. Going from the 60th and 62nd best goalie to the 50th best goalie or whatever does nothing for me.

Raanta gets hurt all the time, but he'd probably been able to do enough to get us thru this season. They probably didn't view him as a reliable backup option beyond this season.

I don’t think you could get one without a job lined up in the US, so until your traded or sign a contract you couldn’t apply and/or would get rejected as not needing it.

Point being we basically traded away the Toffoli return, which was already light, for a goalie that isn't going to be good enough for us to make a difference now or next year.

Yes, I think they’ll win more with with Markstrom/Allen than two still very green Daws/Schmid.

Hell, I think they’d still win more games with Allen/and one of Schmid or Daws. But the chances of that are unlikely.

Raanta cleared waivers, every single team in the league passed on him for free. He's cooked. Allen's numbers aren't quite as bad as they look, MTL's defense is pretty atrocious.

Clearly we were looking for more than just someone to be a punching bag this season.

Allen is a significant upgrade over Vanecek at about half the salary and should at worst be the backup next season.
